Two generations, four engines: TM and MX5 Santa Fe (2022–2025)
The Santa Fe crosses a generation change in this window. The fourth-generation TM (2019–2023) covers model years 2022–2023; the fifth-generation MX5 (2024–present) covers 2024–2025. Four engines appear across the 2022–2025 schedules; the 2024–2025 schedules list only the 2.5L turbo and the 1.6L turbo hybrid:
- 2.5L naturally aspirated GDI I4 (Smartstream)
- 2.5L turbocharged GDI I4 (Smartstream T-GDI)
- 1.6L turbocharged hybrid I4
- 1.6L turbocharged plug-in hybrid I4
Each engine carries its own oil interval, spark-plug life, and severe-service conditions, and several intervals shift again between the TM and MX5 generations. The intervals below come from Hyundai's maintenance booklets, verified September 24, 2026. Where Hyundai's schedule doesn't list a figure for a given year or engine, this guide leaves it out rather than guessing.
For other Hyundai models, see the Hyundai maintenance schedule overview.
Engine oil and filter
2.5L naturally aspirated and 2.5L turbo, 2022–2023: every 8,000 miles or 12 months. Severe service: every 5,000 miles or 6 months — the 2022 manual applies this under conditions A through L, the 2023 manual narrows it to D, H, I, L. Requires API SN PLUS.
1.6L turbo hybrid and 1.6L turbo plug-in hybrid, 2022–2023: every 8,000 miles or 12 months. Severe service: every 3,000 miles or 6 months.
2.5L turbo and 1.6L turbo hybrid, 2024–2025: every 8,000 miles or 12 months. Severe service under conditions D, H, I, L: every 5,000 miles or 6 months. Requires API SN PLUS full synthetic.
Every engine in this lineup shares the same 8,000-mile, 12-month normal interval. The difference is entirely in the severe-service mileage: the non-hybrid engines drop to 5,000 miles, while the hybrid and plug-in hybrid drop further, to 3,000 miles, in the 2022–2023 manuals.
Transmission and drivetrain
Automatic transmission fluid — 2.5L naturally aspirated, 2022–2023: no fixed interval under normal driving; the manual specifies "no check, no service required." Severe service under conditions A, C, E, F, G, H, I, K: replace every 60,000 miles.
Automatic transmission fluid — 1.6L turbo hybrid and 1.6L turbo plug-in hybrid, 2022–2023: no fixed interval under normal driving ("no check, no service required"). Severe service: replace every 62,000 miles.
Automatic transmission fluid — 1.6L turbo hybrid, 2024–2025: no fixed interval under normal driving ("no check, no service required"). Severe service: replace every 62,000 miles per the 2024 manual, every 60,000 miles per the 2025 manual.
Dual-clutch transmission fluid — 2.5L turbo: inspect at 32,000 miles or 48 months, and again at 96 and 144 months. Severe service: replace every 56,000 miles.
Rear differential fluid — 2.5L naturally aspirated and 2.5L turbo (AWD), 2022–2023: the front and rear differential oil is inspected every 16,000 miles or 24 months. Severe service: replace every 72,000 miles.
Rear differential fluid — 2.5L turbo, 2024–2025: inspect at 32,000 miles or 48 months, and again at 96 and 144 months. Severe service: replace every 72,000 miles.
Transfer case fluid — 2.5L naturally aspirated and 2.5L turbo, 2022–2023: "no check, no service required," under both normal and severe driving.
Transfer case fluid — 2.5L turbo, 2024–2025: inspect at 32,000 miles or 48 months, and again at 96 and 144 months. Severe service: replace every 72,000 miles.
On the 2.5L turbo, the transfer case is the item that changed most between generations: "no check, no service required" in the 2022–2023 manuals, then an inspection at 32,000 miles or 48 months in the 2024–2025 manuals. The rear differential inspection moved from every 16,000 miles or 24 months to 32,000 miles or 48 months.
Brakes, cooling and spark plugs

The dual-clutch transmission inspection, the rear differential fluid check, and the transfer case fluid check on the 2.5L turbo are the three items owners are most likely to skip, because none of them show up on a basic oil-change ticket. The dual-clutch inspection applies to every 2.5L turbo; the transfer case inspection applies to the 2024–2025 2.5L turbo.
Common questions about the Hyundai Santa Fe
How often does a Hyundai Santa Fe need an oil change?
Every engine in the 2022–2025 Santa Fe lineup — naturally aspirated, turbo, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid — calls for an oil change every 8,000 miles or 12 months under normal driving. Severe-service intervals differ: the non-hybrid engines drop to every 5,000 miles, while the hybrid and plug-in hybrid drop to every 3,000 miles in the 2022–2023 manuals.
Does the Santa Fe's automatic transmission fluid need to be changed?
Under normal driving, Hyundai lists the automatic transmission fluid as 'no check, no service required' for the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine and the hybrid and plug-in hybrid. Severe service calls for a replacement every 60,000 miles on the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine and every 62,000 miles on the 2022–2023 hybrids; the 2024–2025 hybrid is 62,000 miles per the 2024 manual and 60,000 miles per the 2025 manual. The 2.5L turbo uses a dual-clutch transmission with its own inspection schedule.
What changed between the TM and MX5 Santa Fe maintenance schedules?
On the 2.5L turbo, the transfer case fluid went from 'no check, no service required' in the TM-generation (2022–2023) manuals to an inspection at 32,000 miles or 48 months in the MX5-generation (2024–2025) manuals. The rear differential inspection moved from every 16,000 miles or 24 months to 32,000 miles or 48 months.
