A torque wrench is one of the few tools where being approximate isn't good enough. Under-torque a lug nut and a wheel can come loose at highway speed. Over-torque a cylinder head bolt and you strip threads or warp a head. Over-torque a spark plug into aluminum and you're pulling the head to re-tap it. The wrench is cheap insurance against expensive mistakes.

One tool, used correctly, prevents hundreds of dollars in avoidable damage.
Why torque matters
Fasteners aren't just "tight" — they're engineered to a specific preload. Too loose and they back off from vibration. Too tight and you're stretching the bolt past its yield point, or crushing whatever it's holding down.
Three common examples of getting this wrong:
- Wheels: over-torqued lugs warp brake rotors (causing pulsing under braking) and can stretch wheel studs.
- Oil drain plugs: over-tightened, they strip the oil pan threads — a job that costs more than the car is worth to fix properly.
- Spark plugs: over-torqued into aluminum heads, the threads pull out with the plug.
Guessing with a breaker bar and "feel" works until it doesn't. A torque wrench removes the guesswork.
The three types you'll see
Not all torque wrenches are the same tool. Pick the type that matches what you'll use it for.
- Click-type (beam lock / ratcheting): the most common. You set a value, tighten until you hear/feel a click. Good for 90% of home-garage work. Mid-range models are accurate to ±3-4%.
- Beam (deflecting-beam): a simple pointer on a scale. No moving parts, no calibration needed, lasts forever. Harder to read at awkward angles.
- Digital / electronic: displays the value as you tighten, beeps at target. Most accurate, also most expensive, and needs batteries.
For most people, a click-type is the right call. If you do a lot of critical engine work, add a digital one for fine control.
Picking the right range
Torque wrenches have a usable range — roughly 20% to 100% of their rated maximum. You get best accuracy in the middle 50%. Using a wrench at the bottom or top of its range is where readings drift.
A practical two-wrench setup covers almost everything:
- 3/8" drive, 10-80 Nm (7-60 ft-lb): interior bolts, brake calipers, oil pan bolts, spark plugs, most engine accessories.
- 1/2" drive, 40-200 Nm (30-150 ft-lb): wheel lugs, suspension, axle nuts, most chassis work.

A small and a large wrench cover most jobs without either being misused at the edge of its range.
Cheap combo kits with one wrench spanning 5-200 Nm exist — avoid them. The accuracy at either end is terrible.
What to look for when buying
Price ranges widely and the difference is real, but you don't need a top-shelf tool for occasional home use.
- Accuracy rating: look for ±4% or better. Anything without a stated accuracy is a guess.
- Calibration certificate: quality wrenches come with one. If yours doesn't, the claimed accuracy is marketing.
- Dual-scale (Nm and ft-lb): essential if you work on vehicles from different markets.
- Mechanism feel: the click should be sharp and obvious, not vague. Avoid wrenches where the click feels mushy.
- Length: longer wrenches give finer adjustment but can be awkward in tight spots.
A reasonable click-type from a known tool brand costs around €80-150. A dedicated spark-plug-range tool is another €60-100. It's a one-time purchase.
How to use a torque wrench correctly
Owning one isn't enough — most misuse comes down to a few avoidable mistakes.
- Snug the fastener first with a regular ratchet. The torque wrench is only for the final pull, not for spinning bolts down.
- Pull smoothly through the handle — don't jerk it. A steady pull gives an accurate click.
- Stop at the click. Don't keep pulling "just a little more." The click is the target.
- Pull from the handle, not mid-shaft. Where you grip changes the effective length and therefore the torque.
- Use a straight line of pull perpendicular to the fastener. Angled pulls skew the reading.
- Respect the sequence. Multi-bolt patterns (wheels, head bolts) have a tightening order and often a two- or three-stage torque. Skipping stages warps the component.

Grip at the handle, pull smooth, stop at the click — three habits that prevent most errors.
Care and calibration
A torque wrench is a precision instrument. It'll stay accurate for years if you treat it like one.
- Store it at its lowest setting, not zero. Leaving spring tension on the internals drifts the calibration.
- Don't use it as a breaker bar. If a bolt needs more than the wrench's max, reach for a breaker bar.
- Don't drop it. A single drop onto concrete can throw off accuracy by 10% or more.
- Calibrate every 5,000 clicks or annually, whichever comes first. Most professional tool shops offer this; a calibration check costs less than a cheap wrench.
- Keep it clean and dry. Oil and grit work their way into the mechanism.
If your wrench has been dropped, used on a stuck bolt, or stored tightened for months — get it checked before trusting it on anything critical.
Common torque values to memorize
These aren't substitutes for the service manual, but they're useful reference points.
- Passenger car wheel lugs: typically 110-140 Nm (80-100 ft-lb). Always check the specific vehicle.
- Oil drain plugs: usually 25-35 Nm (18-26 ft-lb).
- Spark plugs (aluminum head): typically 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft-lb).
- Brake caliper bolts: typically 25-40 Nm (18-30 ft-lb) for slider pins; caliper bracket bolts are higher.
When in doubt, look up the manufacturer value. Torque specs vary widely by make and model — a VW wheel spec is not a Toyota wheel spec.
