DN8 Sonata (2021–2024): four engines, four schedules
The eighth-generation Sonata (platform code DN8, 2020–present) covers four distinct powertrains across the 2021–2024 model years:
- 2.5L Smartstream naturally aspirated GDI/MPI I4 — SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited
- 1.6L Smartstream turbocharged GDI I4 — SEL Plus, Limited (not in the 2024 manual)
- 2.5L Smartstream turbocharged GDI I4 — N Line
- 2.0L Smartstream GDI I4 hybrid — Hybrid Blue, SEL, Limited
Each engine has its own oil, spark-plug, and coolant schedule, and several intervals shift again by model year. The figures below come from Hyundai's maintenance booklets, verified September 24, 2026. Where an interval changed between years, both are listed. Where the manual says "no fixed interval," the entry explains why. Where two model years give the same figure but the underlying note differs — a severe condition list, an inspection column, a revised printing — that difference is called out too, so you're not applying a 2021 rule to a 2024 car.
Model year matters more on the Sonata than most owners assume. Hyundai revised the coolant follow-up interval, the N Line's plug life, and the hybrid's brake-fluid schedule all within this four-year window, and none of those changes are obvious unless you compare manuals side by side.
For other Hyundai models, see the Hyundai maintenance schedule overview.
Engine oil and filter
2.5L naturally aspirated and 1.6L turbo, 2021–2024: every 8,000 miles or 12 months. Severe service: every 5,000 miles or 6 months. Both require API SN PLUS full synthetic oil. The 1.6L turbo does not appear in the 2024 maintenance booklet, so its entries here stop at the 2023 manual.
2.0L hybrid, 2021: every 7,500 miles or 12 months.
2.5L turbo (N Line), 2022–2024: every 8,000 miles or 12 months. Severe service: every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
2.0L hybrid, 2022–2023: every 8,000 miles or 12 months. Severe service: every 5,000 miles or 6 months if you're running oil below the recommended grade.
The hybrid's normal interval moved from 7,500 miles in 2021 to 8,000 miles from 2022 on. For the 2022–2023 hybrid, Hyundai's manual ties the 5,000-mile, 6-month severe interval to lower-grade oil.
Transmission and drivetrain
Automatic transmission fluid — 2.5L naturally aspirated and 1.6L turbo, 2021–2024: no fixed interval under normal driving; the manual specifies "no check, no service required." Severe service under conditions A, C, E, F, G, I: replace every 60,000 miles.
Automatic transmission fluid — 2.0L hybrid, 2021–2023: no fixed interval under normal driving ("no check, no service required"). Hyundai lists no severe-service figure for the hybrid's transmission fluid.
Dual-clutch transmission fluid — 2.5L turbo (N Line), 2022–2024: inspect at 32,000 miles or 48 months, and again at 96 and 144 months. Severe service: replace every 64,000 miles per the 2022 manual, every 56,000 miles per the 2023–2024 manuals.
The N Line's DCT is the only Sonata transmission with a fixed inspection schedule — every other engine in the lineup runs "no check required" under normal driving.
Brakes, cooling and spark plugs
Brake fluid — 2.5L naturally aspirated and 1.6L turbo, 2021–2024: replace every 48,000 miles or 48 months; inspect every 8,000 miles or 12 months.

Tire rotation — 2.0L hybrid, 2023: every 8,000 miles or 12 months.
The N Line's dual-clutch transmission inspection is easy to miss, because no other Sonata engine has an equivalent fixed check on its transmission fluid. The hybrid's starter-generator belt is another: it is listed separately from the drive belt inspection and only applies to the hybrid powertrain, so check both its inspection and its replacement figure.
Common questions about the Hyundai Sonata
How often does a Hyundai Sonata need an oil change?
The 2.5L naturally aspirated, 1.6L turbo, and 2.5L turbo N Line engines all call for an oil change every 8,000 miles or 12 months. The hybrid ran 7,500 miles in 2021, then moved to 8,000 miles or 12 months from 2022 on.
Does the Sonata N Line need transmission fluid service?
The N Line's dual-clutch transmission fluid is inspected at 32,000 miles or 48 months, and again at 96 and 144 months, under normal driving. Severe service drops the replacement interval to 64,000 miles in the 2022 manual, or 56,000 miles in the 2023–2024 manuals.
Is the 1.6L turbo Sonata covered for 2024?
No. The 1.6L turbo is not in the 2024 manual, so its maintenance schedule here covers the 2021–2023 model years only. For a 2024 Sonata, follow the schedule for the engine listed in its 2024 manual.
