Every M3 and M4 covered here, from the 2015 F80 M3 to the 2026 G82 M4, starts life with a 1,200-mile (≈1,900 km) running-in service that changes the engine oil and the rear differential oil. After that, BMW's Condition Based Service (CBS) calls the oil at most every 10,000 miles (≈16,000 km) or 12 months, and the M-specific items run on the oil-service count: the air filter and, from 2016, the spark plugs every 3rd oil service (about 30,000 miles, ≈48,000 km), and the rear differential oil every 5th (about 50,000 miles, ≈80,000 km).

This guide uses BMW of North America's US booklets for the F80 M3 (model years 2015–2018), the F82 M4 (2015–2020), and the G80 M3 and G82 M4 (2021–2026). Earlier M3 generations are not covered.

The cars and engines covered

  • F80 M3 (2015–2018) and F82 M4 coupe and convertible (2015–2020): the 3.0L M TwinPower Turbo inline-six (S55), with the 7-speed M-DCT dual-clutch or a 6-speed manual.
  • G80 M3 and G82 M4 (2021–2026): the 3.0L M TwinPower Turbo inline-six (S58), rear-wheel drive with the 6-speed manual or the 8-speed M Steptronic automatic, plus Competition xDrive versions from 2022.

The running-in service and oil

The 1,200-mile running-in service is specific to the M cars. On every model year covered, it changes the engine oil and oil filter and the rear differential oil. On 2015 cars with the 6-speed manual, BMW's booklet also has the manual transmission fluid changed and its oil filter cleaned at the same visit.

After running-in, oil follows CBS. The display calls for the change, and it is never more than 10,000 miles (≈16,000 km) or 12 months apart, the cap BMW's service information sets for cars produced from July 2013 onward.

Filters and spark plugs

Cabin microfilter. Every 2nd engine oil service, about 20,000 miles (≈32,000 km), on every M3 and M4 here.

Engine air filter. Every 3rd engine oil service, about 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km), more often in dusty conditions. That's the same for the S55 and S58 cars.

Spark plugs. On the S58 cars (2021–2026) and on the S55 cars from 2016, the plugs are replaced at every 3rd oil service, about 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km). BMW's 2015 booklet put the S55 plugs at every 6th oil service, about 60,000 miles (≈97,000 km).

Differential, transfer case and transmissions

Rear differential oil. Changed at the 1,200-mile running-in service and then at every 5th engine oil service, about 50,000 miles (≈80,000 km), on every car covered.

Transfer case (xDrive). The G80 M3 Competition xDrive and G82 M4 Competition xDrive, sold from 2022, add a transfer case fluid change at every 5th oil service, about 50,000 miles (≈80,000 km). BMW's booklets list it for the M3 in 2022–2025 and for the M4 in 2022–2026.

Transmissions.

  • The 7-speed M-DCT on the F80 and F82 is a long-term rated fill, changed only for transmission repair.
  • The 8-speed M Steptronic on the G80 and G82 is also a long-term rated fill.
  • The 6-speed manual has no scheduled change on the G80 and G82, nor on the 2016 and 2018 F80 M3 or the 2016 and 2018–2020 F82 M4, and the 2017 booklet has no manual transmission row. Only the 2015 booklet schedules it: at the running-in service and then every 5th oil service, about 50,000 miles (≈80,000 km).

Engine coolant. Long-term rated, changed only for cooling system repairs. The level and concentration are checked at each vehicle check.

Brakes and brake fluid

Brake pads are monitored by CBS and replaced when the display calls for them, with the discs checked at that service. Cars with the optional M Carbon Ceramic brakes get a visual check of disc wear using the surface wear indicators.

Brake fluid is time-based: it is replaced when CBS shows it due, every 24 months after each change. The first change may be counted from the production date.

Common questions about the BMW M3

What is the BMW M3 and M4 running-in service?

A dealer service at 1,200 miles (≈1,900 km) on every M3 and M4 covered here. It changes the engine oil and filter and the rear differential oil; on 2015 cars with the 6-speed manual it also changes the manual transmission fluid and cleans its oil filter.

How often do M3 and M4 spark plugs need replacing?

At every 3rd engine oil service, about 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km), on 2016–2020 S55 cars and all 2021–2026 S58 cars. BMW's 2015 booklet put the S55 at every 6th oil service, about 60,000 miles (≈97,000 km).

How often is the M3 or M4 rear differential oil changed?

At the 1,200-mile running-in service, then at every 5th engine oil service, about 50,000 miles (≈80,000 km).

Does the M-DCT or M Steptronic transmission need fluid changes?

Not on BMW's US schedule. The 7-speed M-DCT (F80 and F82) and the 8-speed M Steptronic (G80 and G82) are long-term rated fills, changed only for repairs.

Do xDrive M3 and M4 models need extra service?

Yes. BMW adds a transfer case fluid change at every 5th engine oil service, about 50,000 miles (≈80,000 km), for the M3 Competition xDrive (2022–2025 booklets) and the M4 Competition xDrive (2022–2026).
