BMW's US schedule for the 2022–2026 X5 (G05) runs on Condition Based Service: oil and filter when the display calls for it, at most every 10,000 miles (≈16,000 km) or 12 months; cabin microfilter every 2nd oil service (about 20,000 miles); engine air filter every 4th (about 40,000 miles); spark plugs every 6th (about 60,000 miles); brake fluid every 24 months. The 2026 X5 M60i adds a transfer case oil change every 5th oil service (about 50,000 miles); other X5 transfer cases, the 8-speed automatic and the coolant are long-term fills.

The 2022–2026 BMW X5 (G05) follows BMW's Condition Based Service (CBS): the car tells you when the oil is due, at most every 10,000 miles (≈16,000 km) or 12 months, and the rest of the US schedule is counted in oil services. The cabin microfilter is replaced every 2nd oil service (about 20,000 miles, ≈32,000 km), the engine air filter every 4th (about 40,000 miles, ≈64,000 km) and the spark plugs every 6th (about 60,000 miles, ≈97,000 km). Brake fluid runs on a 24-month clock. The one model-specific item is the 2026 X5 M60i, which adds a transfer case oil change every 5th oil service.

This guide uses BMW of North America's maintenance booklets for the 2022 through 2026 model years. The G05 went on sale for 2019, but the 2019–2021 booklets are not covered here, and neither are earlier X5 generations.

The X5 engines in these years

  • sDrive40i and xDrive40i: 3.0L TwinPower Turbo inline-six (B58), with a 48V mild hybrid from 2024.
  • M50i (2022–2023): 4.4L TwinPower Turbo V8 (N63).
  • M60i (2024 on): 4.4L TwinPower Turbo V8 (S68).
  • xDrive45e (2022–2023) and xDrive50e (2024 on): 3.0L inline-six plug-in hybrids.

The oil, filter, spark plug and brake fluid intervals are the same for all of them. Only the transfer case differs, and only on the 2026 M60i.

How Condition Based Service works on the X5

CBS tracks the engine oil by date and mileage, the brake fluid by date, and the brake pads by remaining wear. BMW's service information caps the CBS oil interval at 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, for cars produced from July 2013 onward. The display may call for oil sooner after short trips, cold starts, idling or high engine speeds.

The cabin microfilter, the engine air filter and the spark plugs never show on the display. They are done together with an oil service at the count BMW gives, so the number of oil services the car has had matters more than the odometer.

Oil, filters and spark plugs

Engine oil and filter. Change when CBS asks, and never go past 10,000 miles (≈16,000 km) or 12 months.

Cabin microfilter. Replace the ventilation microfilter at every 2nd oil service, about 20,000 miles (≈32,000 km).

Engine air filter. Replace the element at every 4th oil service, about 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km), in all five model years. BMW says to do it more often in dusty conditions.

Spark plugs. Replace at every 6th oil service, about 60,000 miles (≈97,000 km).

xDrive transfer case, transmission and coolant

For the MY2022–2025 X5, BMW's booklets have no transfer case row: the xDrive transfer case is a long-term rated fill, replaced only when repairs are performed or when the car's service system calls for it.

The MY2026 booklet changes that for one model. The X5 M60i gets a transfer case oil change at every 5th engine oil service, about 50,000 miles (≈80,000 km). The same booklet also prints an X5 M60i transfer case line at the 2nd oil service, but the layout doesn't make clear whether that is a one-time change or a repeating one, so we don't list it as an interval. The 2026 xDrive40i and xDrive50e stay on the long-term fill.

The 8-speed automatic transmission and the engine coolant are long-term rated too. There is no scheduled change for either; the coolant level and concentration are checked at each CBS vehicle check.

Brakes and brake fluid

The front and rear pads are monitored by CBS, which shows their remaining miles. They are replaced when the display calls for them, and the discs are checked for surface and thickness at that service. Brake lines and connections are checked for leaks at each vehicle check.

Brake fluid is replaced when CBS shows it due, every 24 months after each change. The first one can be counted from the production date.

What BMW doesn't schedule for the X5

  • Front and rear differential fluid. No differential row for the non-M X5 in any booklet checked.
  • Tire rotation. No rotation interval in the booklets; many cars run staggered tire sizes.
  • 12V battery. Only a state-of-charge check inside the vehicle check.
  • Plug-in hybrid high-voltage battery coolant (xDrive45e, xDrive50e). A level and concentration check in both reservoirs, with no replacement interval.

Common questions about the BMW X5

How often does a 2022–2026 BMW X5 need an oil change?

When the Condition Based Service display calls for it, and never more than 10,000 miles (≈16,000 km) or 12 months apart. Short trips, cold starts, idling and high engine speeds can bring it forward.

Does the BMW X5 need transfer case fluid changes?

Only the X5 M60i, and only in BMW's MY2026 booklet, which changes its transfer case oil at every 5th engine oil service (about 50,000 miles, ≈80,000 km). The MY2022–2025 booklets have no X5 transfer case row, and the other 2026 X5 models keep a long-term fill.

When are the spark plugs due on an X5 xDrive40i?

At every 6th engine oil service, about 60,000 miles (≈97,000 km), in BMW's 2022–2026 US booklets.

Does the X5 8-speed automatic need a fluid change?

No. BMW lists the automatic transmission and the engine coolant as long-term rated fluids, replaced only when repairs are performed.

How often should X5 brake fluid be changed?

Every 24 months, by date, when the CBS display shows it due. The first change can be counted from the production date.
