BMW's US schedule for the 5 Series G30 (2017–2023) and G60 (2024–2026) runs on Condition Based Service: oil and filter when the display calls for it, at most every 10,000 miles (≈16,000 km) or 12 months; cabin microfilter every 2nd oil service (about 20,000 miles); spark plugs every 6th (about 60,000 miles); brake fluid every 24 months. The engine air filter interval changes by model year and engine. Coolant, the 8-speed automatic and the xDrive transfer case have no scheduled change.

BMW's US schedule for the 2017–2026 5 Series (G30 and G60) is run by Condition Based Service (CBS). The car tells you when the oil is due, at most every 10,000 miles (≈16,000 km) or 12 months, and the other items are counted in oil services: the cabin microfilter every 2nd (about 20,000 miles, ≈32,000 km) and the spark plugs every 6th (about 60,000 miles, ≈97,000 km). Brake fluid is on a 24-month clock. The engine air filter is the item to watch: its interval changes with the model year and, on the G30, with the engine.
This guide covers two generations sold in the US: the G30 for model years 2017 through 2023 and the G60 for model years 2024 through 2026, from BMW of North America's maintenance booklet for each year. It does not cover 5 Series cars built before the 2017 model year, whose schedules we haven't reviewed.

The engines covered
G30 (2017–2023): the 2.0L TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder (B46/B48) in the 530i and 530i xDrive; the 3.0L TwinPower Turbo inline-six (B58) in the 540i and 540i xDrive; the 4.4L TwinPower Turbo V8 (N63) in the M550i xDrive from 2018; and the 2.0L plug-in hybrid in the 530e and 530e xDrive from 2018.
G60 (2024–2026): the 2.0L TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder with a 48V mild hybrid in the 530i and 530i xDrive; the 3.0L TwinPower Turbo inline-six with a 48V mild hybrid in the 540i xDrive; and the 3.0L plug-in hybrid in the 550e xDrive from 2025.
The oil, cabin filter, spark plug and brake fluid intervals are the same across all of them.
How Condition Based Service works
CBS tracks the engine oil by date and mileage, the brake fluid by date, and the front and rear brake pads by remaining wear. For cars produced from July 2013 onward, BMW's service information caps the CBS oil interval at 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. The display may call for oil sooner after short trips, cold starts, idling or high engine speeds.
The cabin microfilter, engine air filter and spark plugs don't appear on the display. They are tied to the count of oil services and done together with one, so a record of each oil service is how you know when they come due.
Engine air filter by model year
This is the one item that moves around from booklet to booklet. BMW says to replace it more often in dusty conditions in every year.
- 2017 (530i, 540i): every 5th oil service, about 50,000 miles (≈80,000 km).
- 2018–2020: the M550i every 3rd oil service, about 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km); the 530e every 4th, about 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km). These booklets name neither the 530i nor the 540i on any air filter row, so we give no interval for them.
- 2021 and 2022: every 4th oil service, about 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km), for all 5 Series.
- 2023: the booklet marks the filter at both the 3rd and 4th oil service; replacing it at about 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km) satisfies both.
- 2024 (G60): every 4th oil service, about 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km).
- 2025 (G60): the booklet leaves the 5 Series blank on both air filter rows, so there is no BMW interval to quote.
- 2026 (G60): every 3rd oil service, about 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km).
Oil, cabin filter and spark plugs
Engine oil and filter. Change them when CBS asks, never beyond 10,000 miles (≈16,000 km) or 12 months. The booklets list "change engine oil and oil filter" for all models.
Cabin microfilter. Replace the ventilation microfilter at every 2nd engine oil service, about 20,000 miles (≈32,000 km).
Spark plugs. Replace them at every 6th engine oil service, about 60,000 miles (≈97,000 km), on every G30 and G60 engine in the booklets' non-M column.
Brakes, brake fluid and long-life fluids
The front and rear brake pads are monitored by CBS, which shows their remaining miles. They are replaced when the display calls for it, and the discs are checked for surface and thickness at that service. Brake lines and connections are checked for leaks at each CBS vehicle check.
Brake fluid is replaced when CBS shows it due: every 24 months after each change, with the first change possibly counted from the production date.
BMW lists three fluids as long-term rated, with replacement only necessary when repairs are performed:
- Engine coolant. Level and concentration are checked at each vehicle check.
- 8-speed automatic transmission. No scheduled fluid change.
- xDrive transfer case. No scheduled change unless the car's service system calls for it.
What BMW doesn't schedule for the 5 Series
- Rear differential fluid. No booklet has a rear differential row for the non-M 5 Series.
- Tire rotation. No rotation interval in any booklet; many cars run staggered tire sizes.
- 12V battery. Only a state-of-charge check inside the vehicle check; no replacement interval.
- 550e high-voltage battery coolant and 48V mild-hybrid system: no interval or inspection item in the booklets.
Common questions about the BMW 5 Series
How often does a BMW 5 Series need an oil change?
On the 2017–2026 5 Series, when the Condition Based Service display calls for it, and never more than 10,000 miles (≈16,000 km) or 12 months apart. Short trips, cold starts, idling and high engine speeds can bring it forward.
When are the spark plugs due on a 530i or 540i?
At every 6th engine oil service, about 60,000 miles (≈97,000 km), on both the G30 and the G60 5 Series.
How often should the 5 Series engine air filter be changed?
It depends on the model year: every 5th oil service (about 50,000 miles) on the 2017 530i and 540i, every 4th (about 40,000 miles) on MY2021, 2022 and 2024, and every 3rd (about 30,000 miles) on MY2023 and 2026. The 2018–2020 booklets list the M550i at 30,000 miles and the 530e at 40,000 miles.
Does the 5 Series 8-speed automatic need a fluid change?
Not on BMW's US schedule. The 8-speed automatic, the engine coolant and the xDrive transfer case are long-term rated fills, and BMW says replacement is only necessary when repairs are performed.
How often is 5 Series brake fluid replaced?
Every 24 months, by date, when the CBS display shows it due. The first change may come later because it can be counted from the production date.
