Audi A3 Maintenance Schedule (8V 2015–2020, 8Y 2022–2024)

Audi's US maintenance cards for the A3 change the engine oil and filter every 10,000 miles or 12 months, replace the cabin air filter every 20,000 miles or 2 years, and change the brake fluid every 2 years regardless of mileage. Spark plugs and S tronic fluid depend on the engine and year. For example, spark plugs are due every 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km) on the 2.0T engines through 2018, but every 80,000 miles on the 2019–2020 A3 40 TFSI and A3 45 TFSI and the 2022–2024 A3 40 TFSI.

These figures come from Audi's US maintenance cards, booklets and schedules for the 8V A3, model years 2015–2020, and the 8Y A3, model years 2022–2024. Many items depend on the engine, the S tronic transmission or the quattro drivetrain, so every row below names its scope. This guide does not cover earlier A3 generations or any model year not listed here, and it gives no figures for them.

The cards name these engines and model years. Each row in this guide is limited to the ones it lists.

• 1.8T (1.8L TFSI, front-wheel drive): 2015–2016
• 2.0T quattro (2.0L TFSI): 2015–2018
• 2.0 TDI (2.0L turbo diesel, front-wheel drive): 2015
• A3 Sportback e-tron (1.4L TFSI turbo plug-in hybrid): 2016–2018
• 2.0T front-wheel drive, B-cycle (2.0L TFSI): 2017–2018
• A3 40 TFSI (2.0L TFSI B-cycle, front-wheel drive): 2019–2020

How the schedule is built

In 2015 and 2016, Audi's schedules list a Standard Maintenance service first at 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 1 year after delivery and then every 10,000 miles or 1 year. A Major Maintenance service comes first at 15,000 miles or 2 years and then every 20,000 miles or 2 years.

From 2017, and in the 2022–2024 cards, the first Minor Maintenance is due at 10,000 miles or 1 year after delivery. After that, Minor and Standard Maintenance alternate, and each kind comes every 20,000 miles or 2 years. Together they put a visit every 10,000 miles or 12 months. The length of each item's interval stays the same across the two structures. Only the first-due figures differ; they are in the quick-reference table or, where it does not show them, the first-due table near the end.

Oil and air filter under severe conditions

Engine oil and filter. Change the oil and replace the filter every 10,000 miles or 12 months in every covered year. Audi gives no severe-service number. Under severe conditions, such as extremely low temperatures or excessive dust, Audi says engine oil changes must be done in between the given intervals.

Engine air filter. Replace the air filter element every 60,000 miles. Audi gives no time interval for it. Under severe conditions such as excessive dust, Audi says to clean or replace the filter in between the given intervals, and it gives no number for that.

Spark plugs by engine and year

Audi sets three different spark plug intervals, and each is whichever occurs first of the mileage and the time. Match your engine and year.

• 1.8T, 2015–2016: first at 55,000 miles (≈89,000 km) or 6 years, then every 60,000 miles or 6 years.
• 2.0T quattro (2015–2018), A3 Sportback e-tron (2016–2018) and 2.0T front-wheel drive B-cycle (2017–2018): every 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km) or 6 years. The lower first replacement for 2015–2016 is in the quick-reference table.
• A3 40 TFSI and A3 45 TFSI (2019–2020) and 8Y A3 40 TFSI (2022–2024): every 80,000 miles or 6 years.

Do not apply the 80,000-mile figure to a 2.0T from 2018 or earlier, or the 40,000-mile figure to a 2019 or newer car.

S tronic and quattro fluids

S tronic fluid. Audi gives this by engine, and it has no time interval:

• 1.8T (2015–2016), 2.0T quattro (2015–2018) and 2.0 TDI (2015): change the fluid and replace the filter element for the clutch hydraulics every 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km). On 2015–2016 cars the first change is at 35,000 miles (≈56,000 km). In 2017 and 2018 the 40,000-mile figure covers only the non-B-cycle 2.0T, which is the 2.0T quattro; the B-cycle 2.0T is on the 80,000-mile interval below.
• A3 Sportback e-tron (2016–2018): change the fluid every 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km). The first change in 2016 is at 35,000 miles (≈56,000 km).
• 2.0T front-wheel drive B-cycle (2017–2018), A3 40 TFSI and A3 45 TFSI (2019–2020) and 8Y A3 40 TFSI (2022–2024): change the fluid every 80,000 miles.

Quattro clutch fluid. On cars with quattro, change the AWD clutch fluid every 3 years regardless of mileage. This applies to the 2.0T quattro (2015–2018), the A3 45 TFSI (2019–2020) and 8Y cars equipped with quattro.

Diesel and plug-in hybrid items

Fuel filter, 2.0 TDI (2015). Replace the diesel fuel filter first at 15,000 miles, then every 20,000 miles. Audi's 2015 schedule for the TDI also lists AdBlue and diesel particulate filter items, and this page gives no figures for them.

Timing belt, 2.0 TDI (2015) and A3 Sportback e-tron (2016–2017). Replace the timing belt every 130,000 miles (≈209,000 km), and check the tensioning system, damper and idler pulleys, replacing them if necessary. The 2018 card has no timing-belt item for the e-tron, so this page gives no timing-belt figure for 2018.

Brakes, battery and belt checks

Brake pads. Audi's cards say to check the thickness of the brake pads at every scheduled service, which is every 10,000 miles or 12 months. On the 8Y, the brake hoses and bleeder caps are also checked at Standard Maintenance.

Brake discs, 2015–2017. Check the disc thickness every 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km) or 4 years, whichever occurs first. The 2018, 2019 and 2020 schedules have no disc check for the A3.

12 V battery, 2015–2017. Check the 12 V battery for clean terminals, a properly mounted housing and no damage, and replace it if necessary, every 20,000 miles or 2 years. The 2018, 2019 and 2020 schedules have no 12 V battery check for the A3.

Connected box / OCU battery, 8Y. At Standard Maintenance, every 20,000 miles or 2 years, Audi says to check the state of health of the connected box / OCU battery (for Audi Connected Services) with the diagnostic tester.

Ribbed V-belt, 2015–2017. Check the ribbed V-belt and replace it if necessary every 80,000 miles, and check the belt-drive tension where a manual tensioner is fitted. The 2018, 2019 and 2020 schedules have no belt check for the A3.

Starter/generator drive belt, 8Y. Replace the starter/generator drive ribbed V-belt, including the tensioner, every 60,000 miles.

First-due figures for 2015 and 2016

In 2015 and 2016, several items have a first-due figure that is lower than the repeat interval. Spark plugs, S tronic fluid and the TDI fuel filter show theirs in the quick-reference table; the others, as Audi's 2015 and 2016 documents print them, are below.

What Audi does not schedule for the A3

These items have no interval, or no consistent one, in Audi's US schedules for the covered years:

• Tire rotation, 2017–2020 and 2022–2024. The schedules have no rotation item. In 2022–2024, Standard Maintenance only checks tire condition, tread depth and pressure.
• Tire rotation, 2015–2016. The 2015 card, the 2016 booklet and Audi's 2016 schedule list a rotation at the first service only. The 2016 maintenance card instead lists it at every Standard Maintenance. Because the 2016 documents disagree, this page gives no repeat interval for those years.
• Engine coolant. There is no replacement interval in the 2015–2020 or 2022–2024 schedules. Audi only checks the coolant level and freeze protection.
• Timing belt, e-tron 2018. The 2018 card has no timing-belt item, as noted above.

If a shop quotes one of these as factory scheduled for a 2015–2020 or 2022–2024 A3, ask which Audi document it comes from.
