Audi Maintenance: A4 2017–2020, A3 2015–2020 and 2022–2024

Audi's US maintenance cards for the B9 A4 (2017–2020) and the A3 (2015–2020 and 2022–2024) change the engine oil and filter every 10,000 miles or 12 months, the brake fluid every 2 years regardless of mileage, and the cabin air filter every 20,000 miles or 2 years. Spark plugs and S tronic fluid depend on the model, engine and year.

This page summarizes the two Audi models covered here: the A4 (B9 generation, model years 2017–2020) and the A3 (8V generation, 2015–2020, and 8Y generation, 2022–2024). It states only what the cards for both models share, and each model has its own section and full guide below. Other Audi models have no figures here, and neither do A4 or A3 model years that are not listed on this page. Use your owner's literature for those cars.

Each row applies to the A4 (2017–2020) and the A3 (2015–2020 and 2022–2024), unless it names a model. On the 2015–2016 A3, several items also have a lower first-due figure, which the A3 guide lists.

How Minor and Standard Maintenance work

On the A4 (2017–2020) and the A3 (2017–2020 and 2022–2024). The first Minor Maintenance is due at 10,000 miles or 1 year after delivery. After that, Minor and Standard Maintenance alternate, and each kind comes every 20,000 miles or 2 years. Together they put a visit every 10,000 miles or 12 months. The oil and filter are changed at each of these visits, every 10,000 miles or 12 months.

On the A3 in 2015 and 2016. Audi's schedules use an older structure. A Standard Maintenance service is due first at 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 1 year after delivery and then every 10,000 miles or 1 year. A Major Maintenance service is due first at 15,000 miles or 2 years and then every 20,000 miles or 2 years. The A3 guide lists the first-due figures item by item.

Severe conditions. Audi gives no severe-service number for the oil. Under severe conditions, such as extremely low temperatures or excessive dust, Audi says engine oil changes must be done in between the given intervals. For the engine air filter, Audi says that under severe conditions such as excessive dust it should be cleaned or replaced in between, again with no number.

Filters, brakes and time-based items

These repeat intervals are the same on the A4 and the A3 in every covered year (on the 2015–2016 A3 the first engine air filter is at 55,000 miles (≈89,000 km) and the first cabin filter at 15,000 miles or 2 years):

• Cabin air filter. Replace the dust and pollen filter every 20,000 miles or 2 years.
• Engine air filter. Replace it every 60,000 miles. Audi gives no time interval for it.
• Brake fluid. Change it every 2 years regardless of mileage. It is a time item, so the date matters more than the odometer.
• Brake pads. Check the thickness at every scheduled service.

Spark plugs are time-limited too. Every plug interval on these two models ends at 6 years or its mileage, whichever occurs first. Both models also have a battery check at Standard Maintenance: the A4 (2017–2020) checks the connected box battery, and the 8Y A3 (2022–2024) checks the connected box / OCU battery, every 20,000 miles or 2 years.

S tronic fluid is a mileage item

On the A4 and the A3, Audi gives the S tronic fluid change by mileage only, with no time interval. The figure differs by model and engine: 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km) on the A4, and 40,000 miles or 80,000 miles on the A3. The 6-speed manual offered on the 2017–2018 A4 2.0T quattro has no S tronic fluid item, so check which transmission your car has before you use either figure.

Audi A4 (B9, 2017–2020)

This section covers the B9 A4 with the 2.0L TFSI four-cylinder, from Audi's US maintenance cards for model years 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. The headline intervals:

• Engine oil and filter every 10,000 miles or 12 months.
• Spark plugs every 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km) or 6 years, whichever occurs first.
• S tronic fluid every 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km), on the 7-speed S tronic only.

The A4 guide also covers a ribbed V-belt check that appears on the 2017 card only. It does not cover the B9 model years after 2020 or earlier A4 generations, and it gives no figures for them.

Audi A3 (8V 2015–2020, 8Y 2022–2024)

The 8V and 8Y A3 from Audi's US cards, booklets and schedules. The 8V covers the 1.8T, 2.0T, 2.0 TDI and A3 Sportback e-tron in the years the guide lists, and the 8Y covers the A3 40 TFSI mild hybrid. The headline intervals:

• Engine oil and filter every 10,000 miles or 12 months in every covered year.
• Spark plugs by engine and year, each at 6 years or the mileage, whichever occurs first: 60,000 miles on the 1.8T (2015–2016), 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km) on the 2.0T quattro, the 2.0T front-wheel drive B-cycle and the A3 Sportback e-tron through 2018, and 80,000 miles on the 2019–2020 A3 40 TFSI and A3 45 TFSI and the 8Y A3 40 TFSI.
• S tronic fluid by engine: 40,000 miles (≈64,000 km) on the 1.8T, 2.0T quattro, 2.0 TDI and A3 Sportback e-tron through 2018, and 80,000 miles on the 2.0T front-wheel drive B-cycle (2017–2018), the 2019–2020 A3 40 TFSI and A3 45 TFSI, and the 8Y A3 40 TFSI.

A3 cars with quattro also change the AWD clutch fluid every 3 years regardless of mileage. The A3 guide does not cover earlier A3 generations or any model year not listed, and it gives no figures for them.

Other Audi models

Other Audi models have no figures on this page. The A4 and A3 numbers above come from those two models' own cards and are not figures for any other model. Use the owner's literature for your car.

What the A4 and A3 cards do not schedule

A few items that generic checklists include have no interval, or no consistent one, in these Audi schedules:

• Tire rotation. The A4 (2017–2020) and the A3 (2017–2020 and 2022–2024) schedules have no rotation item. For the 2015 and 2016 A3, the 2015 card, the 2016 booklet and Audi's 2016 schedule list a rotation at the first service only, while the 2016 maintenance card lists it at every Standard Maintenance, so no repeat interval is given for those years.
• Engine coolant. No covered schedule gives a replacement interval. Audi only checks the coolant level and freeze protection.
• A4 only (2017–2020). There is no differential fluid change, only a leak check. Audi's current cards set no battery replacement interval, and carbon cleaning is not a scheduled item.

If a shop quotes one of these as factory scheduled for a covered A4 or A3, ask which Audi document it comes from.
