The 2019–2021 Nissan Altima is part of the sixth-generation L34, which launched in 2019 and continues today. Over these three model years, the Altima came with two different four-cylinder engines, and Nissan publishes a separate maintenance schedule for each one:

  • 2.5L PR25DD (188 hp), available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
  • 2.0L KR20DDET VC-Turbo (248 hp), front-wheel drive only.

Both engines use Nissan's Oil Control System (OCS), which displays a dashboard indicator when the oil needs changing, but each engine also has its own printed backstop interval in the maintenance booklet. A handful of items also changed between the 2019–2020 manuals and the 2021+ manuals, most notably the cabin air filter. This guide covers every official interval for the 2019, 2020 and 2021 Altima, split by engine and, where it applies, by model year, using only the figures Nissan publishes. Link back to the full lineup at nissan maintenance schedule.

Engine oil and filter

2.5L PR25DD (2019–2021)

The schedule lists oil and filter at every 10,000 miles or 12 months. This is an Oil Control System vehicle: Nissan's guidance is to change the oil when the OCS indicator shows, within two weeks or 500 miles of the warning. If the OCS resets early or is inoperative, change the oil within 6 months or 5,000 miles. Severe driving makes the OCS display earlier; there is no separate severe mileage figure for this engine.

2.0L KR20DDET VC-Turbo (2019–2021)

The schedule lists oil and filter every 7,500 miles or 12 months for the VC-Turbo. This is also an OCS vehicle, so the same logic applies: change when the indicator shows. If the OCS is inoperative, change the oil within 6 months or 3,750 miles.

The two engines run different backstop intervals — 10,000 miles for the 2.5L versus 7,500 miles for the VC-Turbo — and different inoperative-OCS fallbacks. Whichever engine your Altima has determines which set of numbers applies; the two schedules don't merge into one.

Treat the OCS indicator as the primary signal and the mileage/month figures as the backstop. Severe driving makes the OCS display earlier, which is why the 2.5L has no separate severe oil mileage figure. If the OCS is inoperative (or, on the 2.5L, resets early), the fallback interval for your engine applies: 6 months or 5,000 miles on the 2.5L PR25DD, 6 months or 3,750 miles on the VC-Turbo.

Tire rotation

Tire rotation is tied to the engine, not a single number for the whole model.

  • 2.5L PR25DD: Rotate every 5,000 miles or 6 months. The 2021+ manuals list this in the every-5,000-mile service block; the 2019–2020 manuals state it directly: "Tires should be rotated every 5,000 miles."
  • 2.0L KR20DDET VC-Turbo: Rotate every 7,500 miles or 12 months.

On the PR25DD, tire rotation happens twice for every oil change. On the VC-Turbo, the tire rotation and oil change land on the same interval.

Transmission and drivetrain

CVT fluid

Both engines pair with a CVT, and both follow the same normal-service pattern: inspect only, no scheduled replacement, on a cycle matching the engine's own service interval — every 10,000 miles / 12 months for the 2.5L PR25DD, every 7,500 miles / 12 months for the VC-Turbo.

Severe-duty guidance differs by manual year. The 2021+ manuals call for an actual replacement of the CVT fluid at 60,000 and 120,000 miles on the 2.5L PR25DD, and at 60,000 miles on the VC-Turbo. The 2019–2020 manuals instead say: with a car-top carrier or on rough or muddy roads, have the dealer check CVT fluid deterioration every 60,000 miles and change it if needed, or change it every 60,000 miles if it isn't inspected. That 2019–2020 guidance applies to both engines.

Transfer case fluid (AWD, PR25DD only)

AWD is only available with the 2.5L PR25DD engine. On AWD models, inspect the transfer case fluid every 10,000 miles or 12 months. Under severe conditions — a car-top carrier, or rough or muddy roads — change it every 20,000 miles or 24 months instead of just inspecting it.

Rear differential fluid (AWD, PR25DD only)

Same pattern, same engine restriction: inspect every 10,000 miles or 12 months on AWD models, and change it every 20,000 miles or 24 months under severe service.

If your Altima is front-wheel drive, none of the transfer case or rear differential items apply — those are AWD-only, and AWD only comes with the 2.5L engine. A VC-Turbo Altima, being front-wheel drive only, never has a transfer case or rear differential service item on its schedule at all.

Drive belt inspection

  • 2.5L PR25DD: No fixed interval until 40,000 miles or 48 months; after that, inspect every 10,000 miles or 12 months.
  • 2.0L KR20DDET VC-Turbo: No fixed interval until 30,000 miles or 48 months; after that, inspect every 7,500 miles or 12 months.

The starting point differs by engine — 40,000 miles for the PR25DD versus 30,000 miles for the VC-Turbo — and so does the inspection cadence once it begins. Before the starting point, there's nothing scheduled on either engine; the belt simply isn't due for a look until that mileage or month mark arrives.

Brakes, coolant and spark plugs

Brake fluid

  • 2.5L PR25DD: Replace every 20,000 miles or 24 months under normal service. Severe: replace every 10,000 miles or 12 months.
  • 2.0L KR20DDET VC-Turbo: Replace every 15,000 miles or 24 months under normal service. Severe: replace every 7,500 miles or 12 months.

The severe-duty figures are not the default. Unless your driving falls under Nissan's severe-service conditions, the normal interval for your engine is the one that applies. Note that the normal brake-fluid interval already differs by engine even before severe duty enters the picture — 20,000 miles for the PR25DD against 15,000 miles for the VC-Turbo — so the two engines never share a single brake-fluid number at any point.

Brake inspection

  • 2.5L PR25DD: Inspect brake pads, rotors, lines and cables every 10,000 miles or 12 months. Severe: inspect pads and rotors every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
  • 2.0L KR20DDET VC-Turbo: Inspect every 7,500 miles or 12 months. Severe: inspect pads and rotors every 3,750 miles or 6 months.

On both engines the severe-service brake inspection runs at half the normal mileage and half the months: 5,000 miles or 6 months against 10,000 miles or 12 months on the 2.5L, and 3,750 miles or 6 months against 7,500 miles or 12 months on the VC-Turbo.

Engine coolant

Coolant follows one schedule across both engines. The first replacement is at 105,000 miles or 84 months; after that, it's every 75,000 miles or 60 months. Nissan specifies Nissan Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue).

Spark plugs

Spark plugs are replaced every 105,000 miles, mileage only, across both engines. Replace early if the gap exceeds 0.053 in on the PR25DD or 0.049 in on the KR20DDET VC-Turbo. That gap figure — not a mileage number — is what triggers an early change.

Filters and the easy-to-miss items

Engine air filter

  • 2.5L PR25DD: Replace at 30,000 miles or 36 months. Nissan notes it should be replaced more often in dusty conditions, without giving a specific shortened interval.
  • 2.0L KR20DDET VC-Turbo: Replace at 30,000 miles or 48 months — same mileage as the PR25DD, but a longer month figure. Same dusty-conditions note applies.

Cabin air filter

This is the item most affected by the mid-generation manual change.

  • 2019–2020 manuals: 2.5L PR25DD at 15,000 miles or 18 months; VC-Turbo at 11,250 miles or 18 months.
  • 2021+ manuals: 2.5L PR25DD tightened to 10,000 miles or 12 months; VC-Turbo tightened to 7,500 miles or 12 months.

If you own a 2019 or 2020 Altima, follow the 15,000-mile (2.5L) or 11,250-mile (VC-Turbo) figure from your car's own manual. If you own a 2021, the shorter 10,000-mile or 7,500-mile figure applies. Don't apply the 2021 interval to an earlier car or vice versa — they're genuinely different numbers, not a rounding difference. If you're not certain which side of the split your car falls on, check the maintenance booklet that came with it.

Common questions about the Nissan Altima

Does the Nissan Altima's oil change interval depend on the engine?

Yes. The 2.5L PR25DD uses a 10,000 mile / 12 month backstop interval, while the 2.0L VC-Turbo uses 7,500 miles / 12 months. Both are Oil Control System vehicles, so the dashboard indicator can trigger the change earlier.

Did the Altima's cabin air filter interval change?

Yes, in the 2021+ manuals. The 2019-2020 manuals list 15,000 miles / 18 months for the 2.5L and 11,250 miles / 18 months for the VC-Turbo. The 2021+ manuals shortened these to 10,000 miles / 12 months and 7,500 miles / 12 months respectively.

Do all Altimas have a transfer case and rear differential service interval?

No. Those items only apply to AWD models, and AWD is only offered with the 2.5L PR25DD engine. Inspect every 10,000 miles / 12 months, or change every 20,000 miles / 24 months under severe conditions like a car-top carrier or rough, muddy roads.
