Chevy Camaro Maintenance Schedule (6th Gen, 2016–2024)

The 6th generation Chevrolet Camaro has no fixed oil-change mileage. GM's Oil Life System decides, and the oil and filter must be changed at least once a year. Tire rotation and the Required Services come every 7,500 miles (12,000 km), the cabin air filter every 22,500 miles (36,000 km) or 24 months, and brake fluid every five years, or every three years on manual-transmission cars from 2018 to 2022.

This guide covers the Camaro sold in the US for model years 2016 through 2024, using GM's owner's manual for each of those years. The engines are the 2.0L LTG turbo four-cylinder (2016–2023), the 3.6L LGX V6, the 6.2L LT1 V8 and the 6.2L LT4 supercharged V8 of the ZL1 (2017–2024). Spark plugs and the engine air filter differ by engine and year, brake fluid differs by transmission in 2018–2022, and the rear axle fluid differs by differential. Camaros built before the 2016 model year are not covered, and this page gives no figures for them.

How the Oil Life System sets oil changes

GM gives the Camaro no fixed oil-change mileage. The Oil Life System signals service with a CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message. GM's rules are:

• When CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON appears, have the engine oil and filter changed within the next 600 miles (1,000 km).
• Under the best conditions the system may not ask for service for up to a year. The oil and filter must still be changed at least once a year, and the system must be reset after the change.
• The oil life percentage is checked at every 7,500-mile (12,000 km) service.
• If the oil life system is reset by accident, service the car within 3,000 miles (≈4,800 km) of the last service.

The 7,500-mile service

GM labels this visit Tire Rotation and Required Services. The oil life percentage is also checked at this service.

• Tires: rotate them.
• Brakes: the 2016–2022 manuals say to inspect the brake system. From 2023 the visit is a Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection, and its list includes a brake system check.
• Battery, 2023–2024: the Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection adds a visual inspection of the 12-volt battery, a battery test and a check of the cables and connections.

Engine and cabin air filters

Cabin air filter. Replace it every 22,500 miles (36,000 km) or 24 months, whichever comes first, in every covered model year. GM says to replace it more often in heavy traffic, poor air quality or high dust.

Engine air filter. This one differs by engine and year:

• 2016–2022: replace it every 45,000 miles (72,000 km) or four years, whichever comes first. Cars with the engine air filter life system, listed from 2020, replace it when the Driver Information Center shows REPLACE AT NEXT OIL CHANGE or REPLACE ENGINE AIR FILTER SOON.
• 2023, 2.0L and 3.6L: the filter is condition-based. The life system asks for it with the same two messages, and GM states no mileage or time limit.
• 2023, 6.2L LT1 and LT4: the 2023 manual gives the life-system text for the 2.0L and 3.6L only and no fixed interval for cars without it, so this page gives no figure.
• 2024, 3.6L: condition-based, on the same two messages.
• 2024, 6.2L engines: these have no life system. Replace the filter every 45,000 miles (72,000 km) or four years, whichever comes first.

In dusty conditions GM says to inspect the filter at each oil change, for the cars on the 45,000-mile interval.

Spark plugs by engine and year

GM splits the spark plug interval by engine, and it asks for the plug wires and/or boots to be inspected at the same time:

• 2.0L LTG turbo four-cylinder (2016–2023): every 60,000 miles (96,000 km).
• 6.2L LT4 supercharged V8 (ZL1): every 97,500 miles (156,000 km) for 2017–2019, then every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) for 2020–2024. In the 2017–2019 manuals the 97,500-mile line covers every engine except the 2.0L, so it includes the LT4.
• 3.6L LGX V6 and 6.2L LT1 V8: every 97,500 miles (156,000 km).

Rear axle fluid: limited-slip or open differential

The rear axle fluid interval depends on the differential:

• Limited-slip differential: change the fluid every 45,000 miles (72,000 km), in every model year.
• Open differential, 2020–2024: change the fluid every 150,000 miles (240,000 km). Severe service: every 45,000 miles (72,000 km).
• Open differential, 2016–2019: no scheduled replacement on the normal schedule. Severe service: every 45,000 miles (72,000 km).

GM describes severe service as, for example, mainly heavy city traffic in hot weather, hilly or mountainous terrain, high-speed or competitive driving, or taxi, police or delivery use. Do not power-wash the rear axle output seals.

Transmission fluid: severe service only

GM schedules no transmission fluid change under normal service. Both fluids are severe-service items:

• Automatic transmission: change the fluid and filter every 45,000 miles (72,000 km) in severe service.
• Manual transmission: change the transmission fluid every 45,000 miles (72,000 km) in severe service.

Brake fluid, coolant and other time-based items

• Brake fluid, 2016, 2017, 2023 and 2024: replace it every five years. The 2016 and 2017 manuals call it the brake/clutch fluid.
• Brake fluid, 2018–2022: automatic-transmission cars, every five years. Manual-transmission cars, brake/clutch fluid every three years.
• Engine coolant: drain and fill the cooling system every 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or five years, whichever comes first, for 2016–2022. For 2023–2024 the limit is six years.
• Accessory drive belts, 2016–2022: inspect them every 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or 10 years for fraying, excessive cracking or damage, and replace them if needed. The 2023–2024 manuals no longer list this inspection.
• Air conditioning desiccant: replace it every seven years. The 2019–2024 manuals list this item.

What changed within the generation

In 2018–2022 brake fluid split by transmission, with manual-transmission cars on three years. From 2020 the LT4 spark plugs moved from 97,500 to 60,000 miles, and an open-differential rear axle change at 150,000 miles was added. In 2023–2024 coolant moved from five years to six, the drive belt inspection left the schedule, and the Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection added a battery test at every 7,500-mile service. The 2.0L LTG appears in the 2016–2023 manuals, not 2024.

What GM does not schedule

• A fixed oil-change mileage. The Oil Life System decides, with a one-year limit.
• Transmission fluid on the normal schedule. Only severe service has an interval.
• Engine air filter for the 6.2L in 2023. The 2023 manual gives no interval for it, so this page gives no figure.
• Track-use items. The High Performance supplements for the ZL1 and 1LE give track-use checks and defer road intervals to the owner's manual. This guide gives no figures for track use.
