Chevrolet's T1XX Silverado 1500 has no fixed oil-change mileage. GM's Oil Life System decides, and the oil and filter must be changed at least once a year. Tire rotation and the Required Services come every 7,500 miles (12,000 km), the cabin air filter every 22,500 miles (36,000 km) or 24 months, and brake fluid every five years.
This guide covers the Silverado 1500 sold in the US for model years 2019 through 2026. The figures come from GM's owner's manual for each of those years, including the manual for the 2022 LTD, and from GM's supplements for the 3.0L Duramax diesel. Rows that depend on the engine, the drivetrain or the model year say so. Trucks built before the 2019 model year are not covered, and this page gives no figures for them.

The engines behind these figures are the 2.7L turbo four-cylinder, the 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 (2019–2021 only), the 5.3L and 6.2L EcoTec3 V8s, and the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six (2020–2026). A row with no engine, drivetrain or year note applies to every covered truck.
How the Oil Life System sets oil changes
GM gives the Silverado no fixed oil-change mileage. The Oil Life System signals service with a CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message. GM's rules are:
- When CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON appears, have the engine oil and filter changed within the next 600 miles (1,000 km).
- Under the best conditions the system may not ask for service for up to a year. The oil and filter must still be changed at least once a year, and the system must be reset after the change.
- The oil life percentage is checked at every 7,500-mile (12,000 km) service.
- If the oil life system is reset by accident, service the truck within 3,000 miles (≈4,800 km) of the last service.
- Extended idling: GM counts one hour as 33 miles (≈50 km).
The 7,500-mile service
GM labels this visit Tire Rotation and Required Services. The oil life percentage is also checked at this service.
- Tires: rotate them.
- Brakes: the 2019–2022 manuals say to inspect the brake system. From 2023 the visit is a Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection, and its list includes a brake system check.
- Battery, 2023–2026: the Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection adds a visual inspection of the 12-volt battery, a battery test and a check of the cables and connections.
GM's manuals also include a suspension and steering inspection in these services rather than listing it as a separate item.
Engine and cabin air filters
Cabin air filter. Replace it every 22,500 miles (36,000 km) or 24 months, whichever comes first, in every covered model year. GM says to replace it more often in heavy traffic, poor air quality or high dust, or if airflow drops, windows fog or odors appear.
Engine air filter. This is the item that changed most between model years, so check yours:
- 2019–2020: on trucks without the engine air filter life system, replace it every 45,000 miles (72,000 km) or four years, whichever comes first. On trucks with the system, replace it at the next oil change when REPLACE AT NEXT OIL CHANGE appears, or as soon as convenient when REPLACE ENGINE AIR FILTER SOON appears.
- 2021–2022: the life system drives the change. Check its percentage at every 7,500-mile service and replace the filter on the same two messages, and at least every four years.
- 2023–2026: the filter is condition-based. Replace it on the same two messages. GM states no mileage or time limit.
In the 2019–2022 manuals, GM says to inspect the filter at each oil change in dusty conditions.
Spark plugs by engine
GM splits the spark plug interval by engine, and it asks for the plug wires and/or boots to be inspected at the same time:
- 2.7L turbo four-cylinder: every 60,000 miles (96,000 km).
- 5.3L and 6.2L V8: every 97,500 miles (156,000 km).
- 4.3L V6 (2019–2021 trucks only): every 97,500 miles (156,000 km).
In the 2019–2021 manuals the 97,500-mile line reads as every engine except the 2.7L. From 2022 it reads as the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines only.
Transfer case, transmission and axle fluids
Transfer case fluid (4WD only). The interval depends on the model year:
- 2019–2022: every 97,500 miles (156,000 km). Severe service: every 45,000 miles (72,000 km).
- 2023–2026: every 100,000 miles (161,000 km). Severe service: every 50,000 miles (80,500 km).
GM defines severe service as mainly heavy city traffic in hot weather, hilly or mountainous terrain, frequent trailer towing, high-speed or competitive driving, or taxi, police or delivery use. Do not power-wash the transfer case or the axle output seals.
Automatic transmission fluid. GM schedules no replacement under normal service. This is a severe-service item only: in severe service, change the automatic transmission fluid and filter every 45,000 miles (72,000 km).
Front and rear axle fluid. GM schedules no replacement on either the normal or the severe schedule. Water from power-washing can contaminate the fluid, and GM says contaminated fluid should be replaced.
Coolant, brake fluid and other time-based items
- Engine coolant: drain and fill the cooling system every 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or five years, whichever comes first, for 2019–2022. For 2023–2026 the limit is six years.
- Brake fluid: replace it every five years, in every covered model year.
- Air conditioning desiccant: replace it every seven years.
- Accessory drive belts, 2019–2022: inspect them every 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or 10 years for fraying, excessive cracking or damage, and replace them if needed. The 2023–2026 manuals no longer list this inspection.
3.0L Duramax diesel
The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel appears from model year 2020. GM's supplements for it repeat several of the shared items above, including the Oil Life System rule and the coolant interval, and add these:
- Fuel filter: replace it every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or two years, or when CHANGE FUEL FILTER appears, whichever comes first. Replace it more often with biodiesel use, severe dust, off-road driving or extended towing.
- Timing/oil pump belt, 2020–2022: replace it every 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or 15 years.
- Timing/oil pump belt, 2023–2026: replace it every 200,000 miles (GM prints 322,000 km in the 2023 supplement and 320,000 km after that) or 15 years.
- Coolant: five years for 2020–2022, six years for 2023–2026, as above.
What changed in 2023
The 2023 manual changed several rows at once. Transfer case fluid moved from 97,500 to 100,000 miles (severe service from 45,000 to 50,000), coolant from five years to six, and the Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection joined every 7,500-mile service. The drive belt inspection and the four-year engine air filter limit left the schedule. On the diesel, the timing/oil pump belt moved from 150,000 to 200,000 miles, still with a 15-year limit.
What GM does not schedule
A few items that generic checklists include have no interval in GM's Silverado schedule:
- Brake pad and rotor replacement. GM lists only a brake system inspection (a check from 2023) at each 7,500-mile service.
- Diesel exhaust fluid. The Duramax supplements list it as a fluid specification and tank capacity only. The Driver Information Center prompts a refill.
- Battery inspection, 2019–2022. The schedules list no battery item before 2023.
- Timing chain inspection. There is no such item. The 3.0L diesel has a scheduled timing/oil pump belt instead.
If a shop quotes one of these as a GM requirement, ask which GM document it comes from.
Common questions about the Chevrolet Silverado
How often does a Silverado 1500 need an oil change?
GM sets no fixed mileage. The Oil Life System decides: change the engine oil and filter within 600 miles (1,000 km) after CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON appears, and at least once a year.
When should the spark plugs be replaced?
It depends on the engine. GM's schedule says every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) for the 2.7L, and every 97,500 miles (156,000 km) for the 4.3L V6 (2019–2021) and the 5.3L and 6.2L V8s.
How often does the transfer case fluid need changing?
On 4WD trucks, every 97,500 miles (156,000 km) for model years 2019 to 2022 and every 100,000 miles (161,000 km) for 2023 to 2026. In severe service, such as frequent trailer towing or hilly or mountainous terrain, GM shortens it to 45,000 miles (72,000 km) for 2019 to 2022 and 50,000 miles (80,500 km) for 2023 to 2026.
Does the automatic transmission fluid need to be changed?
Not on GM's normal schedule. Under severe service, such as frequent trailer towing, hilly or mountainous terrain, or heavy city traffic in hot weather, GM says to change the fluid and filter every 45,000 miles (72,000 km).
How often is the engine coolant replaced?
Drain and fill every 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or five years, whichever comes first, for model years 2019 to 2022. For 2023 to 2026 the time limit is six years.
