This guide covers the third-generation T33 Nissan Rogue (2021–present) with two engines: the 2.5L PR25DD I4 (181 hp), from the 2021 schedule, and the 1.5L KR15DDT VC-Turbo I3 (201 hp), from the 2022 schedule. Nissan publishes a separate maintenance schedule for each engine, and the two schedules differ across nearly every item — oil, tire rotation, brake fluid, filters and the drivetrain inspections. This guide covers every official interval for the 2021 and 2022 Rogue, split by engine, using only the figures in Nissan's maintenance booklet. See the full lineup at the Nissan maintenance schedule hub.
Both engines use Nissan's Oil Control System (OCS), and both come with an inspect-only approach to most drivetrain fluids under normal use. Where a figure applies only to AWD models, or only under severe conditions, that's called out separately from the normal schedule.
Engine oil and filter
2.5L PR25DD (2021)
This is an OCS vehicle: Nissan's guidance is to change the oil when the indicator shows, within two weeks or 500 miles of the warning. The schedule lists oil and filter at every 10,000 miles or 12 months. Severe driving makes the indicator show earlier; there's no separate severe mileage figure in the table.
1.5L KR15DDT VC-Turbo (2022)
Also an OCS vehicle. The schedule lists oil and filter every 7,500 miles or 12 months.
The two engines run on different backstop numbers — 10,000 miles for the 2.5L versus 7,500 miles for the VC-Turbo — and that difference carries through most of the rest of the schedule too. Treat the OCS indicator as the day-to-day signal and the printed mileage as the schedule's figure. On the 2.5L, severe driving makes the indicator show earlier rather than adding a separate severe mileage to the table.
Tire rotation
- 2.5L PR25DD (2021): Rotate every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
- 1.5L KR15DDT VC-Turbo (2022): Rotate every 3,750 miles or 6 months, listed in every 3,750-mile block of the KR15DDT schedule.
The VC-Turbo's rotation interval is shorter than the 2.5L's — 3,750 miles against 5,000 miles — even though both share the same 6-month side of the interval. If you're used to a 2.5L Rogue's rhythm and switch to a VC-Turbo model, the tire rotation stop comes around sooner, which is easy to miss if you're going by memory instead of the printed schedule for the engine you actually have.
Transmission and drivetrain
CVT fluid
Both engines pair with a CVT, and both list CVT fluid as inspect-only under normal use — every 10,000 miles / 12 months for the 2.5L, every 7,500 miles / 12 months for the VC-Turbo. There's no scheduled replacement under normal driving on either engine.
Severe use is where the two schedules genuinely diverge:
- 2.5L PR25DD: Under severe conditions — including towing, a camper, or a car-top carrier — Nissan calls for CVT fluid replacement at 60,000 and 120,000 miles.
- 1.5L KR15DDT VC-Turbo: The published schedule, which runs to 90,000 miles and then repeats, has no CVT fluid replacement interval at all, normal or severe. Inspection is the only listed service for this engine's CVT fluid.
That's a real difference between the two engines, not an oversight to round away. A 2022 VC-Turbo Rogue owner towing regularly still has no published CVT fluid replacement mileage from Nissan; a 2021 2.5L owner doing the same has one at 60,000 and 120,000 miles. Don't carry the 2.5L's 60,000/120,000-mile figure over to a VC-Turbo car just because both use a CVT — the published schedules for the two engines simply don't match here.
Rear differential fluid (AWD)
On AWD models, rear differential fluid is inspect-only — every 10,000 miles / 12 months on the 2.5L, every 7,500 miles / 12 months on the VC-Turbo. There's no replacement interval in either schedule, normal or severe.
AWD coupling fluid
Also AWD-only, and also inspect-only, on the same cadence: 10,000 miles / 12 months for the 2.5L, 7,500 miles / 12 months for the VC-Turbo. No replacement interval is listed, and on both engines the schedule treats it as an inspection item only.
Transfer case fluid (AWD)
Same pattern again: inspect-only, 10,000 miles / 12 months on the 2.5L, 7,500 miles / 12 months on the VC-Turbo, with no replacement interval published.
Between the rear differential, the AWD coupling and the transfer case, an AWD Rogue has three separate drivetrain items on the same inspection cadence as its CVT, all inspect-only under normal use, and none of them carrying a severe-use replacement figure the way the CVT fluid does on the 2.5L. A front-wheel-drive Rogue skips all three of these items entirely — they only apply to AWD models, on either engine.
Drive belt inspection
- 2.5L PR25DD: No fixed interval until 40,000 miles or 48 months; after that, inspect every 10,000 miles.
- 1.5L KR15DDT VC-Turbo: No fixed interval until 30,000 miles or 48 months; after that, inspect every 7,500 miles.
On both engines, nothing is scheduled for the drive belt before its starting mileage or its 48-month mark, which is the same month figure on both engines — there's no early inspection point to track.
Brakes, coolant and spark plugs
Brake fluid
- 2.5L PR25DD: Replace every 20,000 miles or 24 months under normal service. Severe: replace every 10,000 miles or 12 months.
- 1.5L KR15DDT VC-Turbo: Replace every 15,000 miles or 24 months under normal service. Severe: replace every 7,500 miles or 12 months.
Brake inspection
- 2.5L PR25DD: Inspect pads, rotors and lines every 10,000 miles or 12 months. Severe: inspect pads and rotors every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
- 1.5L KR15DDT VC-Turbo: Inspect every 7,500 miles or 12 months. Severe: inspect pads and rotors every 3,750 miles or 6 months.
On both engines, the severe-duty brake fluid and brake inspection figures are half the normal interval. That pattern holds for the 2.5L (20,000 to 10,000; 10,000 to 5,000) and for the VC-Turbo (15,000 to 7,500; 7,500 to 3,750) — but the underlying normal figures are still different between the two engines, so halving one engine's number never gives you the other engine's number. The severe figures only apply under the severe conditions Nissan defines; they're not a stricter default you should adopt just because they exist in the manual.
Engine coolant
Coolant follows a single schedule across both engines. The first replacement is at 105,000 miles or 84 months; after that, it's every 75,000 miles or 60 months. Nissan specifies Nissan Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (blue).
Spark plugs
Spark plugs are replaced every 105,000 miles, mileage only, across both engines. Replace early if the gap exceeds 0.053 in on the PR25DD or 0.041 in on the KR15DDT. The gap figure, not a shorter mileage number, is what triggers an early change. Both engines share the same 105,000-mile spark plug figure and the same coolant schedule, which makes this the one section of the Rogue's maintenance booklet where the two engines actually line up.
Filters and the easy-to-miss items
Engine air filter
- 2.5L PR25DD (2021): Replace at 30,000 miles or 36 months. Nissan notes it should be replaced more often in dusty conditions, without a specific shortened interval.
- 1.5L KR15DDT VC-Turbo (2022): Replace at 30,000 miles or 48 months — same mileage figure as the 2.5L, but a longer month figure. Same dusty-conditions note applies.
Cabin air filter
- 2.5L PR25DD (2021): Replace every 15,000 miles or 18 months.
- 1.5L KR15DDT VC-Turbo (2022): Replace every 11,250 miles or 18 months.
The month figure is identical across both engines, but the mileage isn't — the VC-Turbo's cabin filter comes due at three-quarters the mileage of the 2.5L's. It's worth checking your engine before you set a reminder for this one, since the two figures are close enough to mix up but different enough to matter.
Common questions about the Nissan Rogue
Does the Nissan Rogue's oil change interval depend on the engine?
Yes. The 2021 2.5L PR25DD lists oil and filter at every 10,000 miles or 12 months. The 2022 1.5L VC-Turbo lists it every 7,500 miles or 12 months. Both are Oil Control System vehicles, so the dashboard indicator can call for a change earlier under severe driving.
Does the Rogue's CVT fluid need to be replaced?
Under normal use, both engines list CVT fluid as inspect-only with no scheduled replacement. Under severe use, including towing or a car-top carrier, the 2.5L PR25DD has a replacement interval at 60,000 and 120,000 miles. The 1.5L VC-Turbo's published schedule has no CVT fluid replacement interval at all, normal or severe.
How often should tires be rotated on a 2022 Nissan Rogue?
On the 1.5L VC-Turbo, tire rotation is every 3,750 miles or 6 months. The 2021 2.5L PR25DD is rotated every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
