TL Tucson (2019–2021): two engines, one shared schedule

The 2019–2021 Tucson sits in the back half of the third-generation TL chassis run (2016–2021). Two naturally aspirated, direct-injected engines cover these three model years:

  • 2.0L Nu GDI I4
  • 2.4L Theta II GDI I4

Unlike some Hyundai models, the two engines share one maintenance schedule almost across the board — the same oil interval, the same filter intervals, the same spark-plug life. The one place the schedule splits is brake fluid, where the 2019 manual and the 2020–2021 manuals disagree. The figures below come from Hyundai's maintenance booklets, verified September 24, 2026.

This generation is also the back half of the TL chassis, which ran from 2016 through 2021. The 2019–2021 schedule below reflects Hyundai's maintenance booklets for those three model years specifically — it isn't necessarily the same schedule an earlier TL-generation Tucson would carry, so owners of an earlier model year should check the maintenance booklet for their own car.

For other Hyundai models, see the Hyundai maintenance schedule overview.

Engine oil and filter

2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4, 2019–2021: every 7,500 miles or 12 months. Severe service under conditions A through K: every 3,750 miles or 6 months.

The severe interval is exactly half the normal one — 3,750 miles instead of 7,500, six months instead of twelve. Hyundai defines severe-service conditions A through K for this generation. If you meet even one of them regularly, the oil interval is cut in half.

Severe service at a glance

Several items in this schedule list explicit severe-service conditions, and the lists don't all match:

  • Oil: all eleven conditions, A through K.
  • Automatic transmission fluid: conditions A, C, D, E, F, G, I.
  • Brake inspection: conditions C, D, G, H.
  • Spark plugs: conditions A, B, H, I, K.
  • Engine air filter and cabin air filter: conditions C and E only — the narrowest list in the schedule.

Condition C, for example, applies to oil, transmission fluid, brake inspection and both filters, but not to spark plugs. If your driving matches condition C, plan on the tightest version of nearly every interval above, not just the oil change.

Transmission and drivetrain

Automatic transmission fluid — 2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4: no fixed interval under normal driving; the manual specifies "no check, no service required." Severe service under conditions A, C, D, E, F, G, I: replace every 60,000 miles.

Rear differential fluid — 2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4: inspect at 30,000 miles or 48 months, and again at 96 and 144 months. Severe service: replace every 75,000 miles.

Transfer case fluid — 2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4: inspect at 30,000 miles or 48 months, and again at 96 and 144 months. Severe service: replace every 75,000 miles.

All three drivetrain fluids follow the same pattern: no scheduled replacement under normal driving, just an inspection (or no check at all for the transmission), with a mileage-based replacement only once you're in severe service. The rear differential and transfer case share an identical inspection cadence and an identical 75,000-mile severe-service figure, so the two checks can be booked together.

The automatic transmission fluid is the odd one out: it doesn't even get a scheduled inspection under normal driving, only the severe-service replacement figure. That's a stricter "no service" claim than the rear differential or transfer case, both of which at least get checked on a fixed schedule regardless of how you drive. If you're not sure whether your driving qualifies as severe under conditions A, C, D, E, F, G, or I, the transmission fluid is the one to settle first, because its schedule has no inspection step at all under normal driving.

Brakes, cooling and spark plugs

Brake fluid — 2019: inspect at 15,000 miles or 24 months. The 2019 manual lists inspection only, with no replacement interval published.

Brake fluid — 2020–2021: inspect every 7,500 miles or 12 months; replace at 30,000 miles or 48 months, then again at 60,000 miles (96 months) and 90,000 miles (144 months).

This is the one interval that genuinely splits by model year on the Tucson. The 2019 manual only asks for an inspection, on a 15,000-mile, 24-month cycle, and gives no mileage or month figure for replacing the fluid. The 2020 and 2021 manuals tighten the inspection to every 7,500 miles — twice as often as the 2019 cycle — and add a full replacement schedule starting at 30,000 miles. If you own a 2019 Tucson, the 2019 manual gives no replacement figure for you — its brake-fluid entry stops at "inspect."

Brake inspection — 2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4: every 7,500 miles or 12 months. Severe service under conditions C, D, G, H: more frequently.

The brake inspection runs on the same 7,500-mile, 12-month cadence as the oil change and battery inspection, so all three can be handled at one visit, with the brakes checked more often if conditions C, D, G or H apply.

Engine coolant — 2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4: first replacement at 120,000 miles or 120 months; every 30,000 miles or 24 months after that.

Spark plugs — 2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4: every 97,500 miles. Severe service under conditions A, B, H, I, K: more frequently.

The 97,500-mile spark-plug interval applies to both engines without a split by displacement, and the severe-service conditions for plugs differ from the ones for oil.

Filters

Engine air filter — 2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4: replace every 22,500 miles or 36 months. Severe service under conditions C, E: more frequently.

Cabin air filter — 2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4: replace every 7,500 miles or 12 months. Severe service under conditions C, E: more frequently.

The cabin filter runs on the same 7,500-mile cadence as the oil change — the shortest interval of any filter in the Tucson's schedule. The engine air filter runs three times longer, at 22,500 miles, which means it's due roughly every third oil-change cycle rather than every one.

Both filters share the same severe-service conditions — C and E — and neither filter gets a published mileage figure for how much shorter the severe interval runs. The manual simply says "more frequently" without a number: if your driving matches condition C or E, how far to shorten both filter intervals is a judgment call the manual leaves to you rather than a fixed figure it publishes.

The easy-to-miss items

Tire rotation — 2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4: every 7,500 miles.

Battery inspection — 2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4: every 7,500 miles or 12 months.

Drive belt inspection — 2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4: first inspection at 60,000 miles or 72 months, then every 15,000 miles or 24 months after that.

Valve clearance — 2.0L Nu GDI I4 and 2.4L Theta II GDI I4: inspect every 60,000 miles or 72 months.

The drive belt and valve clearance checks share the same first-inspection point — 60,000 miles or 72 months — which is easy to miss because neither shows up on a standard oil-change or tire-rotation visit. The rear differential and transfer case inspections have the same problem: their first check doesn't land until 30,000 miles or 48 months, several oil changes into ownership.

Tire rotation and battery inspection both land on the same 7,500-mile cadence as the oil change, so in practice they're the two items least likely to get skipped — they're due at the same visit. The drive belt, valve clearance, rear differential, and transfer case items are the opposite: each has a first-check point well past the first several oil changes, so a Tucson can go 30,000 to 60,000 miles before any of them come up on a service ticket at all.

Common questions about the Hyundai Tucson

How often does a 2019–2021 Hyundai Tucson need an oil change?

Both the 2.0L Nu GDI and 2.4L Theta II GDI engines call for an oil change every 7,500 miles or 12 months under normal driving. Severe service, covering conditions A through K, cuts that to every 3,750 miles or 6 months.

Does a 2019 Tucson need a brake fluid replacement?

The 2019 owner's manual only lists a brake-fluid inspection, every 15,000 miles or 24 months, with no replacement interval published. The 2020 and 2021 manuals add a replacement schedule starting at 30,000 miles or 48 months.

Does the Tucson need transmission fluid service?

Under normal driving, Hyundai lists the automatic transmission fluid as 'no check, no service required.' Severe service, under conditions A, C, D, E, F, G, or I, calls for a replacement every 60,000 miles.
