The fifth-generation Toyota RAV4, the XA50, covers model years 2019–2025. This guide covers only that generation. It comes with three powertrains, and each one has its own list of maintenance items:

  • RAV4 (gas): 2.5L naturally aspirated DOHC I4 (A25A-FKS) with the Direct Shift-8AT eight-speed automatic. The AWD items below apply only to AWD versions.
  • RAV4 Hybrid: 2.5L Atkinson-cycle DOHC I4 (A25A-FXS) with a front hybrid transaxle and a rear electric motor.
  • RAV4 Prime (plug-in hybrid, 2021–2025): the same A25A-FXS engine layout, with front and rear electric motors.

The schedule below is from Toyota's 2022–2024 Warranty & Maintenance Guides; the fluid specs and capacities are from the 2019–2025 owner's manuals. No schedule change was found within the generation, but if you own a 2019–2021 or 2025 RAV4, confirm each interval against your own guide. Toyota uses two verbs in its schedule, and they mean different things: inspect means check the part or fluid and service it only if the check calls for it; replace means replace it at that interval. This guide keeps Toyota's verb for every item and keeps the normal and severe schedules separate. For other Toyota models, see the Toyota maintenance schedule overview.

Engine oil and filter

Engine oil — gas, Hybrid and Prime: replace the oil and filter every 10,000 miles (≈16,000 km) or 12 months. Toyota specifies SAE 0W-16 for every XA50 engine, the gas A25A-FKS included.

0W-20 is a stopgap only. Toyota allows SAE 0W-20 when 0W-16 is not available, but only until the next oil change, when the engine goes back to 0W-16. Toyota's 2019–2021 maintenance guides tie the interval to the oil: the 10,000-mile (≈16,000 km) or 12-month interval applies if 0W-16 motor oil is being used.

Severe service: replace the oil and filter every 5,000 miles (≈8,000 km) or 6 months if you drive on dirt or dusty roads; tow, use a car-top carrier or carry heavy loads; make repeated trips under 5 miles in temperatures below 32°F; or do extensive idling or low-speed driving.

Oil capacity with filter: 4.8 qt (4.5 L) for 2019–2023 and 4.5 qt (4.3 L) for 2024–2025, per Toyota's owner's manuals.

Transmission and drivetrain

Automatic transmission — gas: the gas RAV4 uses the Direct Shift-8AT, an eight-speed automatic. It is not a CVT. On the normal schedule Toyota does not replace its fluid. It tells you to inspect the automatic transmission for signs of leakage and inspect the transmission fluid cooler hoses and connections every 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km) or 36 months, with a leak check of sealed components at every 5,000-mile (≈8,000 km) service. Fluid: Toyota Genuine ATF WS, 7.8 qt (7.4 L).

Severe service, gas transmission: replace the ATF at 60,000 (≈97,000 km) and 120,000 miles (≈193,000 km) if you tow, use a car-top carrier or carry heavy loads, or do extensive idling or low-speed driving (police, taxi or delivery use).

Hybrid transaxle — Hybrid and Prime: the front hybrid transaxle is an eCVT. Normal schedule: inspect the transaxle for signs of leakage every 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km) or 36 months. Severe service: replace the fluid at 60,000 (≈97,000 km) and 120,000 miles (≈193,000 km) when towing, using a car-top carrier or carrying heavy loads. Fluid: Toyota Genuine ATF WS, 4.1 qt (3.9 L) in the RAV4 Hybrid (2019–2025) and 4.6 qt (4.4 L) in the RAV4 Prime (2021–2025).

Rear differential oil — gas AWD RAV4: this applies to both gas AWD systems, Dynamic Torque Control AWD and Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD. Normal schedule: inspect the rear differential oil every 15,000 miles (≈24,000 km) or 18 months. Severe service: replace it at every 15,000-mile (≈24,000 km) service (15,000, 30,000, 45,000 and 60,000 miles and on) when towing, using a car-top carrier or carrying heavy loads. Oil: Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LX 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent; 0.5 qt with Dynamic Torque Control AWD and 0.56 qt with Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD.

Transfer case oil — gas AWD: this is a replace item on the normal schedule. Replace the transfer case oil every 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km) or 36 months, and it is inspected at the 15,000-mile (≈24,000 km) services in between. Severe service: replace it every 15,000 miles (≈24,000 km) when towing, using a car-top carrier or carrying heavy loads. Oil: Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LX 75W-85 GL-5 (the 2024–2025 manuals also list LT75W-85 GL-5); 0.48 qt with Dynamic Torque Control AWD and 0.40–0.41 qt with Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD.

Propeller shaft bolt — gas AWD: re-torque the bolt that joins the propeller shaft to the rear differential every 15,000 miles (≈24,000 km) or 18 months. Severe service (dirt or dusty roads, salted roads included, or towing): every 5,000 miles (≈8,000 km).

Rear motor on the RAV4 Hybrid and Prime

This item gets its own section because its fluid and interval are easy to confuse with the gas RAV4's rear differential. The RAV4 Hybrid and Prime drive the rear wheels with a rear electric motor unit, which Toyota's owner's manual lists as the rear differential (rear electric motor); the schedule says "rear differential oil". It is not filled with gear oil.

Rear differential (rear electric motor) — Hybrid and Prime:

Toyota's guides give the schedule below for the 2019–2024 RAV4 Hybrid and 2021–2024 RAV4 Prime; the fluid and capacity are from the 2019–2025 Hybrid and 2021–2025 Prime owner's manuals.

  • Fluid: Toyota Genuine ATF WS, the same fluid as the front hybrid transaxle.
  • Capacity: 1.8 qt (1.7 L).
  • Normal schedule: inspect the rear differential oil every 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km) or 36 months.
  • Severe service: replace it at 60,000 (≈97,000 km) and 120,000 miles (≈193,000 km) only when you tow, use a car-top carrier or carry heavy loads.

If a shop quotes a gear-oil service for the rear motor of a Hybrid or Prime, ask it to confirm the fluid against your owner's manual first. The gas RAV4's 75W-85 gear oil belongs in the gas AWD rear differential and transfer case, not in the rear motor unit.

Brakes, cooling and spark plugs

Brake fluid — all RAV4 models: Toyota's US schedule inspects brake fluid level and condition as part of "inspect and adjust all fluid levels" at every 5,000-mile (≈8,000 km) service. It does not list a time- or mileage-based brake fluid replacement. Fluid: FMVSS No.116 DOT 3 / SAE J1703 or DOT 4 / SAE J1704.

Brake inspection — all RAV4 models: visually inspect the brake linings and drums and the brake pads and discs every 5,000 miles (≈8,000 km) or 6 months. At every 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km) or 36 months, the linings, pads and discs are inspected with a thickness measurement and disc runout check. Brake lines and hoses are inspected at 15,000-mile (≈24,000 km) intervals.

Engine coolant — all RAV4 models: first replacement at 100,000 miles (≈161,000 km) or 120 months, then every 50,000 miles (≈80,000 km) or 60 months. Coolant: Toyota Super Long Life Coolant. Engine circuit capacity: 7.3–7.4 qt on the gas RAV4; 7.1 qt on the Hybrid in the 2019–2021 manuals and 6.4 qt in the 2022–2025 manuals; 8.7 qt on the Prime.

Inverter coolant — Hybrid and Prime: the inverter (power control unit) has its own coolant circuit, separate from the engine's. First replacement at 150,000 miles (≈241,000 km) or 180 months, then every 50,000 miles (≈80,000 km) or 60 months. It is inspected along with the engine coolant at every 15,000-mile (≈24,000 km) service. Capacity: 2.1 qt on the Hybrid in the 2019–2021 manuals and 1.7 qt in the 2022–2025 manuals; 2.1 qt on the Prime.

Spark plugs — gas, Hybrid and Prime: replace every 120,000 miles (≈193,000 km) or 144 months. The gas A25A-FKS and the hybrid A25A-FXS use the same iridium plug, gapped at 0.031 in (0.8 mm). Toyota's guide notes that spark plug maintenance is required under the terms of the Emissions Control Warranty, so keep the receipt.

Filters

Engine air filter — all RAV4 models: replace every 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km) or 36 months. Severe service (dirt or dusty roads): inspect it at every 5,000-mile (≈8,000 km) service.

Cabin air filter — all RAV4 models: replace every 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km) or 36 months, with an inspection at 15,000 miles (≈24,000 km) or 18 months. Toyota notes that heavy traffic, dirt roads and urban, dusty or desert areas may shorten the filter's life.

HV battery cooling intake filter — RAV4 Hybrid: visually check it for dirt or dust every 5,000 miles (≈8,000 km) and clean it if necessary. Clean it every 20,000 miles (≈32,000 km).

DC/DC converter air intake filter — RAV4 Prime: visually check it every 5,000 miles (≈8,000 km) and clean it if necessary. Clean it every 20,000 miles (≈32,000 km).

The easy-to-miss items

These items come up less often than an oil change, so they are the ones most likely to slip past:

  • Rear motor fluid on the Hybrid and Prime: Toyota Genuine ATF WS, 1.8 qt. Inspect every 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km) or 36 months; replace at 60,000 (≈97,000 km) and 120,000 miles (≈193,000 km) only under towing, car-top carrier or heavy-load use.
  • Transfer case oil on the gas AWD RAV4: a normal-schedule replacement every 30,000 miles (≈48,000 km) or 36 months.
  • Gas AWD RAV4 rear differential oil: an inspection every 15,000 miles (≈24,000 km) or 18 months, and a replacement every 15,000 miles only when towing, using a car-top carrier or carrying heavy loads.
  • Propeller shaft bolt on the gas AWD RAV4: re-torque every 15,000 miles (≈24,000 km) or 18 months.
  • Hybrid battery and Prime converter intake filters: check every 5,000 miles (≈8,000 km), clean every 20,000 miles (≈32,000 km).
  • Drive belts — gas only: first inspection at 60,000 miles (≈97,000 km) or 72 months, then every 15,000 miles (≈24,000 km) or 18 months. The Hybrid and Prime guides list no accessory drive belt.
  • Tire rotation — every RAV4: every 5,000 miles (≈8,000 km) or 6 months.
  • Inverter coolant on the Hybrid and Prime: its first replacement comes later than the engine coolant's, at 150,000 miles (≈241,000 km) or 180 months, so it needs its own reminder.

Common questions about the Toyota RAV4
