The single most annoying part of doing my own oil changes used to be the drain plug. Crawling under the car with a 17mm wrench, breaking it loose, then catching the plug as it falls into a pan of warm oil. Every time. On every car.

I'd seen the EZ Oil Drain Valve recommended on a few Subaru forums for years and finally fitted one to my 2018 Subaru Outback last summer. It worked so well I bought a second one for my MX-5 Miata the next time it was due for service. Six months in, I'm not going back.

What the EZ Oil Drain Valve actually is

It's a brass quarter-turn ball valve that screws into your oil pan in place of the factory drain plug. Once installed, you change your oil by flipping a small lever instead of breaking torque on a metal plug.

The body is forged brass with a stainless steel ball and nickel plating. Rated for 250 PSI and -40°F to 365°F, which is well beyond anything an oil pan ever sees. It carries a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer (EZ Oil Drain Valve Co. — the same company that supplies Generac, Lincoln Electric, and JLG for industrial equipment).

Each valve has a dual-action lever: you have to lift the lever before you can rotate it. That's the safety feature — the valve cannot vibrate open on its own, even on a car that lives a hard life on rough roads.

How an oil change works once it's installed

This is the part that sold me. With the engine warm:

  1. Slide the drain pan under the valve.
  2. Lift the lever and turn it 90° counter-clockwise.
  3. Wait for the pan to drain.
  4. Push the lever back to closed.

That's it. No wrench. No dropped plug. No hot oil dripping down your forearm because the plug is welded on by torque-spec gorillas at the last shop.

If the valve sits in an awkward spot on your car, you can screw on an optional hose attachment (3/8" or 5/8" ID, straight or 90° elbow). The hose lets you run the drain into a jug or recycling container instead of a flat pan — useful if your oil pan sits behind a skid plate with a small access hole.

Why I actually like it (six months in)

A few things I didn't expect from the spec sheet:

  • Oil changes are 5 minutes faster. Mostly because there's no fishing the plug out of a hot oil bath, no wiping it down, and no torque wrench step at the end.
  • The crush washer problem goes away. Factory drain plugs use a copper or aluminum crush washer that's technically supposed to be replaced every change. Most people don't, and slow weeps are the result. The EZ valve uses an O-ring that lasts the life of the valve.
  • No more stripped pans. I've seen enough chewed-up oil pan threads on used cars to take this seriously. You install the valve once, torque it to spec, and never touch the threads again. The lever is what gets actuated, not the threaded body.
  • You can drain quickly between flushes. When I do an engine flush on a higher-mileage car, being able to crack the valve, run a bottle of flush, run it for the recommended time, then dump it again without re-cracking a plug is genuinely nice.

Picking the right valve for your car

The valve threads directly into the oil pan, so you need to match the factory drain plug thread size. The EZ catalog covers most of what's on the road. A few common ones:

Two ways to confirm what you need:

  1. Pull your factory plug and measure with a thread pitch gauge — most accurate.
  2. Look up the OEM part number for your car's drain plug and cross-reference. Subaru part 803916010 is M16×1.5, for example.

If you're not sure, the EZ catalog page lists fitments by make, and most of the variants are within a few dollars of each other.

My install: 2018 Subaru Outback (FB25)

Outback uses M16×1.5, so I bought the EZ-108. The factory drain plug torque is 32 ft-lb. Steps:

  1. Warm the engine for 5 minutes, then shut it off.
  2. Loosen the factory drain plug, drain the oil into a pan.
  3. Wipe the threads on the oil pan clean with a rag.
  4. Hand-thread the EZ-108 with a fresh O-ring seated.
  5. Snug it to spec (32 ft-lb on this car) with the supplied wrench flat.
  6. Refill with new oil, run for 30 seconds, check for weeps.

Total install time: about 8 minutes on top of a normal oil change. No leaks at the next change or the one after.

The lever sits clear of the engine undertray on this car — I didn't need the hose attachment. On the Outback the valve points to the passenger side, so the drain stream lands cleanly in the middle of a standard 6-quart pan.

My install: MX-5 Miata

Miata is M14×1.5 → EZ-106. Drain plug torque on the Miata is 22-30 ft-lb. The install was identical to the Outback.

One thing to know on Miatas: the oil pan sits low and the drain plug is on the back side of the pan. With the factory plug, you basically have to remove the splash shield to get at it. With the EZ valve installed, I can reach the lever from the side without dropping the shield — easily my favorite outcome of this whole experiment.

I haven't bothered with the hose attachment here either, but a few Miata owners on forums use the 3/8" elbow because the lever clearance to the K-member is tight on the NA/NB cars. Worth checking before you order.

Things to know before you buy

A few honest caveats:

  • It's a one-time investment per car. Around $25-$35 per valve, plus another $5-$10 if you want the hose attachment. Cheaper than one stripped oil pan thread repair.
  • Not for every track car. If you autocross or track and your tech inspector is the kind who lifts every plug, some events require a safety-wired plug. The EZ valve has a lock collar but it's not a torque-and-safety-wire plug.
  • Don't overtighten. Brass threads strip under steel. Torque to the factory drain plug spec for your car, no more. Don't gorilla it.
  • Watch ground clearance on lowered cars. The valve adds about 1.5" of body below the oil pan. On stock height cars this is a non-issue. On a slammed Miata with a track-day pan rock-strike, you'd want to think about it.
