Ford's printed schedules for the 2018–2024 Mustang (S550 and the 2024 S650) change the oil when the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor asks, never more than one year or 10,000 miles (16,000 km) apart, and after one track weekend or about four hours of track use. The cabin filter is replaced every 20,000 miles (32,000 km), the engine air filter every 30,000 miles (48,000 km), spark plugs every 100,000 miles (160,000 km), and the transmission and rear axle fluids every 150,000 miles (240,000 km). On 2021 and later cars used on track, the rear axle fluid is changed every 500 miles (≈800 km).

Ford's printed schedule for the 2018–2024 Mustang is the same for the 2.3L EcoBoost and the 5.0L Coyote V8: change the oil when the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor asks, never more than one year or 10,000 miles (16,000 km) apart, and rotate the tires and inspect the brakes at the same visits. The cabin filter is replaced every 20,000 miles (32,000 km), the engine air filter every 30,000 miles (48,000 km), spark plugs every 100,000 miles (160,000 km), and the transmission and rear axle fluids every 150,000 miles (240,000 km). Track driving changes things: Ford wants an oil change after one track weekend, and on 2021 and later cars a rear axle fluid change every 500 miles (≈800 km) of track use.
This guide comes from Ford's US owner's manuals for the 2018–2023 Mustang (S550, sixth generation) and the 2024 Mustang (S650, seventh generation). The engines are the 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder, the 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 (Coyote; in the GT and Dark Horse on the S650), and the 5.2L supercharged V8 in the Shelby GT500. It does not cover 2015–2017 cars or earlier generations, whose manuals we haven't reviewed. The Mustang Mach-E is an electric vehicle with its own schedule.
2025 and 2026 Mustangs
The 2024 manual is the last Mustang manual we found with a printed maintenance schedule. For other models, Ford's 2024 and later manuals point owners to a VIN-based schedule tool on ford.com instead. This guide gives no figures for 2025 and 2026 cars; use Ford's tool with your VIN.

Oil changes, including track use
The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor decides when the oil is due. Ford asks you to change it within two weeks or 500 miles (≈800 km) of the message appearing, and never to exceed one year or 10,000 miles (16,000 km). If the monitor is reset early or stops working, change the oil every six months or 5,000 miles (≈8,000 km). On dusty or sandy roads, the severe schedule is every 5,000 miles or six months.
For track use, Ford says to change the engine oil and filter after one track weekend or about four hours of track use, whatever the monitor shows.
Filters, plugs and belts
- Cabin air filter: every 20,000 miles (32,000 km). On dusty or sandy roads, or with extensive idling or low-speed driving, inspect it frequently and replace as required.
- Engine air filter: every 30,000 miles (48,000 km). With extensive idling or low-speed driving, or on dusty or sandy roads, inspect it every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) and replace as required.
- Spark plugs: every 100,000 miles (160,000 km). Ford's severe case is towing or a car-top carrier, or extensive idling or low-speed driving; then it's every 60,000 miles (96,000 km).
- Accessory drive belt: inspect at 100,000 miles (160,000 km), then every other oil change until it is replaced; replace it at 150,000 miles (240,000 km).
Transmission and rear axle
10-speed automatic. Change the fluid and filter every 150,000 miles (240,000 km).
6-speed manual. Change the fluid every 150,000 miles (240,000 km). Under severe use it's every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) when towing and every 50,000 miles (80,000 km) on dusty or sandy roads.
Rear axle. Change the fluid every 150,000 miles (240,000 km). Ford also calls for a change any time the axle has been submerged in water, and at the next convenient time after the axle over-temperature message appears with the wrench indicator. The 2021 and later manuals add a track-use rule: change the rear axle fluid every 500 miles (≈800 km) or when the axle over-temperature message appears.
Shelby GT500 dual-clutch transmission. The owner's manual schedule lists only the automatic and manual transmission fluids. We found no fluid interval for the GT500's 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, so this guide doesn't give one.
Coolant, brake fluid and battery
Engine coolant. The first replacement moved out in 2020:
- 2018–2019: first at six years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km), then every three years or 50,000 miles (80,000 km).
- 2020–2024: first at 10 years or 200,000 miles (320,000 km), then every five years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km).
Brake fluid. The 2018 and 2019 normal schedules have no brake fluid change. From 2020, Ford says to change it every 3 years and not to exceed that time. Brake fluid servicing requires special equipment available at an authorized dealer.
Battery. Check the connections every six months and clean them if necessary.
Common questions about the Ford Mustang
How often does a Mustang GT need an oil change?
When the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor shows the message, within two weeks or 500 miles (≈800 km), and never more than one year or 10,000 miles (16,000 km) apart. If you drive on track, Ford says to change the oil and filter after one track weekend or about four hours of track use.
How often should Mustang rear axle fluid be changed?
Every 150,000 miles (240,000 km) in normal use. Change it after the axle has been submerged, and at the next convenient time after an axle over-temperature message. For track use, the 2021 and later manuals say every 500 miles (≈800 km) or when the over-temperature message appears.
When are Mustang spark plugs due?
Every 100,000 miles (160,000 km), or every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) if you tow or use a car-top carrier, or do a lot of idling or low-speed driving.
Does the Mustang manual transmission need fluid changes?
Yes: every 150,000 miles (240,000 km), or every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) when towing and every 50,000 miles (80,000 km) on dusty or sandy roads.
Is there a schedule for the 2025 or 2026 Mustang?
We haven't found one. The 2024 manual is the last Mustang manual we found with a printed schedule, so this guide gives no figures for 2025 and 2026 cars. Look up your VIN in Ford's online maintenance schedule tool.
