A failing wheel bearing makes a noise that's easy to confuse with tire noise or wind โ€” a low hum or growl that gets louder with speed. The trick is figuring out which corner it's coming from before you start replacing parts.

The sway test

This is the most reliable DIY method:

  1. Find a quiet, empty road or parking lot where you can safely drive 30-40 mph
  2. Gently sway the car left (like a slow lane change) and listen. Loading the left side shifts weight onto the left bearings.
  3. Gently sway the car right and listen again.
  4. The noise gets louder when you load the bad side โ€” weight pressing on a damaged bearing increases the growl

So if the noise gets louder turning right (loading the left), the left side bearing is the culprit.

Other signs

  • Speed-dependent: The noise changes pitch with vehicle speed, not engine RPM. If it stays the same when you shift to neutral while coasting, it's not the transmission.
  • Steering wheel vibration: A bad front bearing can cause a vibration you feel through the wheel.
  • ABS light: On newer cars, the wheel speed sensor is built into the bearing hub. A failing bearing can trigger the ABS warning.
  • Play in the wheel: Jack up the suspect corner and try to rock the wheel top-to-bottom. Any clunking or play means the bearing is gone.

Why it matters

A noisy bearing isn't immediately dangerous, but it's progressing toward failure. A seized bearing can lock the wheel โ€” catastrophic at any speed. More commonly, a badly worn bearing damages the hub and spindle, turning a $150-300 bearing job into a $600+ hub assembly replacement.
