Brakes are the one system you don't get to ignore. The noises they make are how they tell you what's going on before something fails for real. Here's how to translate what you're hearing.

Squealing or squeaking (high-pitched, while braking)

The most common brake noise. Almost always the wear indicator — a small metal tab on the pad that contacts the rotor when the friction material gets thin. By design.

  • What it means: pads are at roughly 3 mm or less. Replace within the next few hundred miles.
  • Action: order pads (and rotors if they're at minimum thickness). Don't put it off — you're a few thousand miles from grinding.

If the squeal is light and happens only on cold mornings or in damp weather, then disappears after the first few stops, it's surface rust on the rotors burning off. Normal.

Grinding (deep, metallic, while braking)

You missed the squeal stage. The pad is gone and the metal backing plate is now scraping the rotor.

  • What it means: metal-on-metal contact. Every stop is gouging the rotor.
  • Action: stop driving the car. Tow it or drive it carefully to the shop. You'll need pads, almost certainly new rotors, and possibly calipers if the brake hose seized.

Danger

Grinding means stopping distance has already increased. Avoid highway speeds and emergency stops until the brakes are repaired.

Clicking or rattling (over bumps, not while braking)

A pad or hardware shim is loose in the caliper bracket.

  • What it means: missing or worn anti-rattle clips, or a pad that wasn't seated properly during the last brake job.
  • Action: annoying but not urgent. Have the brakes inspected at the next service — the shop will reinstall the hardware or replace the clips.

Thumping or pulsing through the pedal (while braking)

Warped rotors, or rotors with uneven pad deposits.

  • What it means: the rotor surface isn't flat. Pad pressure changes as the rotor rotates, so the pedal pulses in your foot.
  • Action: rotors usually need replacement. Resurfacing is sometimes possible if they're above minimum thickness, but new rotors are cheap enough that most shops just swap them.

Hissing (when you release the pedal)

Brake booster vacuum leak. Not technically a brake-noise issue but related.

  • What it means: the booster diaphragm or check valve is leaking. Pedal will feel harder than usual.
  • Action: have the booster pressure-tested. A failing booster reduces braking force significantly.
