Why Suspension Inspection Matters
Your suspension system does two critical jobs: it keeps your tires in contact with the road (safety) and it absorbs road imperfections so you and your passengers are not jarred by every crack and bump (comfort). When suspension components wear out, both jobs suffer.
Worn suspension is also subtle. Unlike a flat tire or a dead battery, suspension degradation happens gradually. You unconsciously adapt to the changed handling characteristics, and by the time you notice something feels "off," components may be significantly worn. A regular inspection catches problems early, when a $40 sway bar link replacement prevents $400 in uneven tire wear.
What to Listen For While Driving
Your ears are your first diagnostic tool. Pay attention to sounds that change with road conditions.
Clunking or knocking over bumps: This is the most common suspension complaint. A single clunk over each bump usually points to a worn sway bar link or end link ($20-$50 per link). A heavier thunk may indicate a worn ball joint or control arm bushing. Note whether the sound comes from the front or rear, and whether it happens on driver's side or passenger's side.
Squeaking over bumps: Dry or worn rubber bushings (control arm bushings, sway bar bushings) squeak as they flex. Sometimes spraying the bushing with silicone lubricant quiets the noise temporarily -- if it does, you have confirmed the source.
Rattling on rough roads: Loose heat shields, worn strut mounts, or worn shock absorber mounts can rattle. These are often annoying but not safety-critical. However, a worn strut mount (the bearing at the top of a strut assembly) can affect alignment and steering feel.
What to Feel While Driving
Changes in handling behavior tell you a lot about suspension condition.
Wandering or drifting: The car does not track straight, or you constantly need steering corrections. Causes include worn tie rod ends, alignment issues, or uneven tire pressure. Equalize tire pressures first and see if the wandering improves.
Excessive body roll in corners: The car leans more than it used to in turns. Worn sway bar links or bushings are the usual culprit.
Nose dive under braking: The front dips dramatically when braking. Worn front struts are not damping the forward weight transfer. Besides discomfort, this increases braking distance.
Bouncy ride: If the car keeps oscillating after a bump, the shocks or struts have lost their damping ability.
The Hands-On Inspection
You need: a floor jack, two jack stands, a flashlight, and your hands. Budget about 45 minutes for a thorough inspection.
The Bounce Test (Shocks and Struts)
This is the classic and it works well for moderate-to-severe wear. Walk to each corner of the vehicle and push down firmly on the fender or bumper area, then release. Count the bounces.
- 1 bounce back to rest: Shocks/struts are fine
- 2 bounces: Getting worn, plan for replacement within 10,000-20,000 miles
- 3+ bounces or continuous oscillation: Worn out, replace soon
Also look at the shock or strut body for oil leaking down the side. A light misting is normal, but active drips or a wet shock body means the seals have failed and the unit has lost damping fluid.
Ball Joints
Ball joints are the pivot points connecting the control arms to the steering knuckle. They allow the suspension to move up/down while the wheels turn left/right. Failed ball joints are genuinely dangerous -- a separated ball joint means loss of steering control.
Jack up one front corner so the tire is off the ground. Grab the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock (top and bottom) and try to rock it. There should be zero perceptible play. Any clunking or movement indicates a worn ball joint. Repeat at 9 and 3 o'clock -- play in this direction points to tie rod ends rather than ball joints.
Visually inspect the ball joint boot (the rubber cover protecting the joint). If the boot is torn, dirt and water have entered the joint and it is on borrowed time even if it does not yet have play.
Tie Rod Ends
Tie rods connect the steering rack to the steering knuckle -- they are what actually turns the wheels when you turn the steering wheel. The outer tie rod end is a ball-and-socket joint that wears over time.
With the front tire off the ground, grab the tire at 3 and 9 o'clock and push/pull. Any movement or clunking indicates a worn outer tie rod end. You can also have someone turn the steering wheel slightly back and forth while you watch the tie rod end -- if the tie rod moves but the knuckle does not immediately follow (there is a gap in the response), the joint is worn.
Worn tie rod ends cause wandering, uneven tire wear (feathering), and can make the car feel vague or imprecise when steering.
Control Arm Bushings
Control arm bushings are rubber or polyurethane mounts where the control arm attaches to the vehicle frame. They absorb vibration and allow controlled movement. When they wear out, you get clunking over bumps, alignment shifts, and vague handling.
Look at the bushings with a flashlight. Cracked, split, or visibly deformed rubber is due for replacement. Some bushings will also show a gap between the rubber and the metal sleeve -- this means the bond has failed.
Sway Bar Links and Bushings
Sway bar links connect the sway bar (stabilizer bar) to the strut or control arm. They are one of the most commonly worn suspension components because they are under constant stress.
Grab the sway bar link by hand and try to move it. A tight link resists movement. A worn link moves freely with an audible clunk. You can often diagnose bad sway bar links by ear alone -- they produce a distinct hollow clunk over bumps, especially single-wheel bumps like a pothole on one side.
Strut Mounts (Upper Mounts)
Strut mounts sit at the top of the strut assembly where it bolts to the body. They contain a bearing that allows the strut to rotate when you turn the steering wheel. A worn strut mount can cause a clunking or creaking noise when turning the wheel at low speed (especially while stationary), affect alignment angles, and cause a rattling sound over bumps.
With the hood open, have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while you watch and listen at the strut tower. Grinding, popping, or visible movement in the mount indicates wear. When replacing struts, always replace the upper mounts at the same time -- reusing a worn mount on a new strut defeats the purpose.
Coil Springs
Coil springs rarely get attention, but they can break or sag over time -- especially in rust-prone climates and on vehicles with high mileage. A broken spring is usually obvious: you will see a gap in the coil, and the vehicle will sit noticeably lower on one corner. Sagging springs are subtler -- measure the ride height at each corner and compare side to side. A difference of more than 3/4 inch (20mm) between left and right on the same axle suggests a sagging spring.
Broken springs are a safety concern because they can shift and damage tires, brake lines, or other suspension components. Replace immediately if found.
What to Look For: Tire Wear Clues
Your tire wear pattern is a record of how well your suspension has been performing.

If you see any of these patterns, inspect the corresponding components before buying new tires. New tires on a car with worn suspension will develop the same wear pattern.
DIY Inspection vs. Professional Alignment
Your hands-on inspection catches physical wear: play in joints, worn bushings, leaking shocks. What it cannot tell you is exact alignment angles -- camber, caster, and toe are measured in fractions of a degree. After replacing any steering or suspension component, always get a four-wheel alignment ($80-$150). Get one at least once a year, or after hitting a major pothole, installing new tires, or noticing off-center steering.
Replacement Priority
Not all worn suspension components carry the same urgency:
Replace immediately (safety risk):
- Ball joints with perceptible play
- Tie rod ends with play
- Torn ball joint or tie rod boots (failure is imminent)
- Leaking struts on the same axle as worn tires (inadequate traction)
Replace soon (within 1-2 months):
- Shocks/struts that fail the bounce test
- Severely worn control arm bushings
- Worn strut mounts (affecting alignment)
Replace when convenient:
- Sway bar links (annoying clunk but not dangerous)
- Sway bar bushings (squeaking, minor handling impact)
- Mildly worn bushings with no play

For DIY work, buy complete strut assemblies (pre-assembled with the spring, mount, and bearing) rather than just the strut cartridge. They cost $30-$50 more but eliminate the need for a spring compressor, which can be genuinely dangerous if used incorrectly.
Inspection Schedule
Add a suspension walkaround to your routine every 10,000-15,000 miles or once a year. At a minimum, perform the bounce test and a visual inspection of boots and bushings. The full hands-on inspection (jacking up each corner and checking for play) is worth doing every 30,000 miles or whenever you notice symptoms.
Good suspension keeps you safe, preserves your tires, and makes the car pleasant to drive. Twenty minutes under the car twice a year is some of the highest-value preventive maintenance you can do.
