You just installed new brake pads โ or had a shop do it โ and you're done, right? Not quite. New brake pads need a break-in procedure called "bedding" to transfer an even layer of pad material onto the rotor surface. Skip this step and you'll likely end up with vibration, squealing, and reduced stopping power.
The bedding procedure
- Find a quiet road where you can safely accelerate and brake repeatedly
- Accelerate to 35 mph, then brake firmly (but not full-stop ABS engagement) down to about 5 mph. Do this 6-8 times.
- Accelerate to 55 mph, then brake firmly down to about 15 mph. Do this 4-6 times.
- Drive for 5 minutes without heavy braking to let the brakes cool down. Avoid sitting with your foot on the brake at a stoplight โ heat buildup on a stationary rotor can cause uneven pad transfer.
- After the cool-down drive, your pads are bedded.
What bedding does
It deposits a thin, even layer of friction material from the pad onto the rotor surface. This transfer layer is what gives you consistent, smooth braking. Without it, the pad makes uneven contact โ some spots grab harder than others, causing vibration and noise.
Common mistakes
- Coming to a complete stop during bedding โ holding the brake stationary on a hot rotor imprints the pad shape, creating a high spot that causes pulsing
- Dragging brakes on a highway descent right after install โ sustained heat before bedding warps rotors
- Ignoring the procedure entirely โ most brake noise complaints after a pad change are from skipped bedding
Why it matters
Proper bedding gives you shorter stopping distances, no vibration, quieter brakes, and more even pad wear. It takes 10 minutes and prevents the most common post-brake-job complaints.
