Why Tire Rotation Matters
Tires wear unevenly by design. Front tires on a front-wheel-drive car handle acceleration, the majority of braking force, and all steering loads -- they wear roughly 2-3 times faster than the rears. Rear-wheel-drive cars put more stress on the rear tires during acceleration but still wear the fronts faster from braking and steering.

Forward cross pattern: Front tires move straight to the rear. Rear tires cross to the opposite front position.

Tread Wear Indicators

Look for them by examining the grooves between tread blocks -- they are small, smooth, raised sections spaced around the circumference.
Measuring with a Tread Depth Gauge
A $5-$10 tread depth gauge gives you exact measurements. Measure at three points across the face of each tire (inside edge, center, outside edge) and at multiple locations around the circumference. This gives you both the absolute depth and the wear pattern.
Reading Tire Wear Patterns
Uneven wear tells you something about your vehicle's alignment or inflation habits:

Wheel Alignment
Alignment is not part of a rotation, but rotation is a good time to assess whether you need one. Get an alignment check if:
- The car pulls to one side on a flat, straight road
- The steering wheel is off-center when driving straight
- You see one-sided or feathered wear on any tire
- You have hit a significant pothole or curb
- You have replaced suspension or steering components
A four-wheel alignment typically costs $80-$150 and should be done at least once a year or whenever you install new tires. Skipping alignment on new tires can void the treadwear warranty and cost you thousands of miles of tire life.
Tire Balancing
