The 2022 Nissan Frontier is the first model year of the third-generation D41, built on Nissan's 3.8L VQ38DD V6. This guide covers every official maintenance interval for the 2022 Frontier, using only the figures in Nissan's maintenance booklet. Where the 2022 schedule differs from later model years, that's noted, but the numbers below are what applies to a 2022 truck specifically. For the rest of the lineup, see the Nissan maintenance schedule hub.

On the 2022 Frontier, the 9-speed automatic transmission fluid splits between a standard figure and a severe-use figure triggered by towing, a car-top carrier, or rough and muddy roads. Both numbers are covered below, and the standard figure is never presented as the severe one or vice versa. The sections below go system by system: oil and tires first, then the transmission and drivetrain, then brakes, coolant and spark plugs, and finally the filters and small items that are easiest to let slide.

Engine oil, filter and tire rotation

Engine oil and filter replacement is due every 7,500 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. This is the standard schedule figure for the 2022 Frontier.

Tire rotation runs on the same cadence: every 7,500 miles, listed in the standard schedule's 7,500-mile service block. Oil changes and tire rotations land at the same visit on this truck, which makes it easy to treat the two as one combined service point rather than tracking them separately, and it means you can plan around a single mileage figure for both.

Because both of these land on the same 7,500-mile mark, they're the most frequent scheduled items on the Frontier. Everything else on the standard schedule — the 15,000-mile drivetrain inspections, the 30,000-mile filters and brake fluid, the 105,000-mile coolant and spark plugs — is a multiple of this base interval or its own separate figure, but the oil and tire rotation pair is what you'll see most often.

Transmission and drivetrain

Automatic transmission fluid (9-speed)

The standard schedule calls for an inspection every 15,000 miles or 12 months on the 9-speed automatic. There's a severe-use figure of 30,000 miles or 24 months, but on the 2022 and 2023 model years, that severe-use replacement only applies if you're towing, using a car-top carrier, or driving on rough or muddy roads — it's not a general severe-use item on these model years.

That changes starting with the 2024 model year, when "replace automatic transmission fluid" becomes a severe-use item for all severe conditions, not just towing or a car-top carrier. If you own the 2022 Frontier specifically, the narrower footnote applies: outside of towing, a car-top carrier, or rough/muddy roads, the 9-speed only gets inspected on this schedule, not replaced on a fixed mileage.

This is worth being precise about, because "severe use" on the ATF line is narrower on the 2022 model than on later years. On the 2022 model, it's specifically tied to three conditions — towing, a car-top carrier, or rough/muddy roads — not a general severe-driving definition. If none of those three apply to how you drive the truck, the 30,000-mile replacement figure isn't the one that governs your schedule; the 15,000-mile inspection is.

Transfer case fluid (4WD)

On 4WD models, the standard schedule calls for an inspection every 15,000 miles or 12 months. That's the figure Nissan publishes; there's no separate replacement mileage listed for normal use. Because it is an inspection item, the useful record is the date and mileage of each check, along with what the inspection found. Two-wheel-drive Frontiers don't have this item on their schedule at all.

Differential gear oil

Same cadence: inspect every 15,000 miles or 12 months under the standard schedule. As with the transfer case, the standard schedule lists an inspection here rather than a fixed replacement mileage. Along with the transmission and transfer case items, this puts three separate drivetrain inspections on the same 15,000-mile mark, which makes that mileage point a natural place to bundle drivetrain checks into one visit.

Propeller shaft lubrication (4WD)

Under standard use, the propeller shaft gets lubricated every 15,000 miles or 12 months, the same cadence as the transfer case and differential inspections. A severe-use lubrication interval of 5,000 miles or 6 months exists, but it's a 2024-and-later item — the 2022 model year has no severe lubrication interval published for the propeller shaft. If you own a 2022 Frontier, the 15,000-mile lubrication is the figure that applies; there's no shorter severe number for this model year. Don't apply the 2024+ 5,000-mile figure to a 2022 truck — that number simply isn't part of the 2022 schedule.

Between the transmission, transfer case, differential and propeller shaft items, the 2022 Frontier's 4WD drivetrain has four separate items serviced at the 15,000-mile mark, with only the transmission carrying a distinct severe-use replacement figure beyond that.

Timing chain

The VQ38DD uses a timing chain. Nissan's spec table lists camshaft operation as "Timing chain" with no scheduled maintenance — there's no interval to track for it. The schedule gives it no replacement mileage, no month figure and no inspection interval, so it does not need a reminder of its own.

Brakes, coolant and spark plugs

Brake fluid

Brake fluid is replaced every 30,000 miles or 24 months under the standard schedule. That's a straight replacement figure, not an inspection — the fluid is swapped on this clock regardless of how it looks. It lands on the same 30,000-mile, 24-month mark as the engine air filter.

Engine coolant

Coolant is due for replacement at 105,000 miles or 84 months. That's the figure Nissan publishes for the 2022 Frontier. It shares the 105,000-mile, 84-month service with the spark plugs, so both items can be handled at the same visit rather than tracked as two separate service appointments on the calendar.

Spark plugs

Spark plugs are replaced at 105,000 miles, in the same service interval as the coolant. Nissan's guidance is to replace them sooner if the gap is out of spec — that's the early-replacement trigger, not a shorter mileage figure. Because the coolant and spark plug intervals land at the same 105,000-mile mark, that service point is the biggest single maintenance visit on the Frontier's entire schedule, bringing together the truck's two longest-interval items at once.

Filters and the easy-to-miss items

Engine air filter

Replace the engine air filter at 30,000 miles or 24 months under standard use. Nissan notes it should be replaced more often in dusty conditions, without giving a specific shortened interval for that case, so a dustier environment is a judgment call layered on top of the base 30,000-mile figure rather than a separately published number.

Cabin air filter

The in-cabin microfilter is replaced every 15,000 miles or 12 months — half the mileage of the engine air filter, and on a shorter month cycle too. Unlike the engine air filter, there's no dusty-conditions note attached to it in the schedule.

Intelligent Key battery

This is the item with the oddest-looking schedule on the truck. Nissan calls for an inspection at 22,500 miles or 18 months, then a replacement at 45,000 miles or 36 months. After that first replacement, it repeats every 22,500 miles: 67,500 miles or 54 months, 90,000 miles or 72 months, 112,500 miles or 90 months, and so on. If you're tracking this one, the inspection point and the replacement point aren't the same mileage — the first 22,500-mile mark is a check, and the actual battery swap doesn't happen until 45,000 miles.

That makes the Intelligent Key the only item on the Frontier's schedule with its own distinct 22,500-mile cadence, separate from the 15,000-mile drivetrain checks and the 30,000-mile filter and brake-fluid interval. It's worth tracking on its own rather than assuming it falls due at one of the more familiar service points.

Common questions about the Nissan Frontier

Does the 2022 Nissan Frontier need automatic transmission fluid changes?

Under the standard schedule, the 9-speed automatic is inspected every 15,000 miles or 12 months. On the 2022 model year, a replacement at 30,000 miles or 24 months only applies if you tow, use a car-top carrier, or drive on rough or muddy roads.

What is the oil change interval for a 2022 Nissan Frontier?

Engine oil and filter replacement is due every 7,500 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Tire rotation is on the same 7,500-mile interval.

Does the 2022 Frontier need propeller shaft lubrication?

The severe-use lubrication interval of 5,000 miles or 6 months is a 2024-and-later item. The 2022 model year has no severe lubrication interval published; the standard 15,000-mile or 12-month lubrication is what applies.
