"Let it warm up for a few minutes" is one of the most stubborn pieces of car advice still circulating, and on a modern fuel-injected engine it's actively wrong. Here's where the myth came from, why it doesn't apply anymore, and what to do instead.
Where the myth came from
The advice made sense for carbureted engines — every car built before the late 1980s. A carburetor mixes air and fuel mechanically, and that mixture is dramatically off when everything is cold. The choke had to engage, the mixture had to richen, and the engine genuinely couldn't run a stable idle until the metal warmed up. Driving immediately meant stalls or hesitation.
That engine isn't on the road anymore. Every car built in the last 30+ years uses electronic fuel injection, which measures intake air temperature, coolant temperature, throttle position, and air mass thousands of times a second, and adjusts the fuel delivery accordingly. A cold start on a fuel-injected engine is no more dangerous than a warm one, as long as you don't immediately rev it to redline.
Why long warm-ups are actually bad
Idling a cold engine for 10 minutes does three things, all of them bad:
- Wastes fuel. Cold idle is the least efficient mode the engine operates in. A 10-minute idle every morning costs roughly a tank of fuel a year.
- Increases engine wear. An engine warms up faster under light load than at idle. Faster warm-up means less time running with cold, thick oil. Idling for 10 minutes keeps the oil cold longer, not less.
- Dumps fuel into the cylinder walls. Cold-start fueling is rich. Extended idle washes oil off the cylinder walls with raw fuel, which is the opposite of what you want for ring and bore wear.
What to actually do
For 95% of conditions and 95% of cars:
- Start the engine.
- Wait 30 seconds — long enough for oil to circulate to the top of the engine.
- Drive off gently. Keep the RPMs below 3,000 and avoid full-throttle acceleration until the temperature gauge moves off cold (usually 2–3 minutes of driving).
That's it. The engine warms up faster, you save fuel, and you stop washing oil off the cylinder walls.
The exceptions
There are a few cases where a slightly longer warm-up is reasonable:
- Sub-zero temperatures (below roughly −20 °C / −5 °F). Wait 1–2 minutes for oil to thin out enough to circulate properly. Still drive gently after that — don't sit idling for 15 minutes.
- Older turbocharged cars without electric oil pumps. A minute of idle is reasonable to make sure oil is reaching the turbo bearings before you load them.
- Defrosting the windshield. Safety reason, not a mechanical one. Idle as long as you need to see.
- Carbureted classic cars. If you actually own one, the original advice still applies — the choke needs to do its job.
Tip
If your car has remote start and you use it for cabin warm-up in winter, that's about comfort, not mechanics. The engine isn't getting any benefit from those extra minutes — and the AC, defroster, and seat heaters are doing most of the work.
The short version
Start. Wait 30 seconds. Drive gently for the first few minutes. That's the warm-up routine for any car built since roughly 1990. Anything longer wastes fuel and slows down the warm-up you were trying to do.
