Pop the bonnet on a modern car and you'll see a plastic-covered maze that seems designed to keep you out. It isn't. Underneath the covers, every engine bay contains the same dozen components, and you can learn all of them in ten minutes.

This is step one of working on your own car: knowing what you're looking at. No tools needed. Just park on level ground, let the engine cool, pull the bonnet release (usually a lever in the driver's footwell), and find the safety catch under the bonnet lip.

First, the safety rules

Three things in an engine bay can hurt you. Learn them before you touch anything.

Heat. The exhaust manifold — where burnt gases leave the engine, usually on the front or back face of the engine block — can exceed 500°C under load and stays dangerously hot for 20–30 minutes after shutdown. The radiator and its hoses run at 90–100°C. Rule of thumb: if the car ran in the last half hour, assume metal parts are hot.

Pressure. The cooling system is pressurised when warm. Opening the coolant cap on a hot engine releases scalding steam and coolant into your face. Only ever open it stone cold.

Rotation. With the engine running, the serpentine belt and fans spin fast enough to take fingers. Never reach into a running engine bay wearing loose sleeves, a scarf, or a lanyard. For everything in this tour, the engine should be off anyway.

One more for hybrid and electric owners: anything orange is high voltage — roughly 200 to 800 volts depending on the car. Orange cables, orange connectors, orange warning labels. Never touch them, never cut them, never rest tools on them. Everything else in this guide still applies to your car.

The engine itself

The big lump in the middle is the engine block, topped by a valve cover — though on most cars built after about 2010, all you'll see is a plastic engine cover with the manufacturer's logo. It usually pulls straight off, held by rubber grommets. Take it off; it's decorative and sound-deadening, nothing more.

The engine burns fuel and air to spin a crankshaft. That's it. Everything else in the bay exists to feed it (air filter, fuel system), cool it (radiator, coolant), lubricate it (oil), or run your accessories off it (belt, alternator).

Healthy looks like: dry and dusty. Unhealthy looks like: wet. Oil weeping from the edges of the valve cover gasket is the most common leak on older cars — a dark, greasy film where cover meets block. A little sweating is normal past 150,000 km; actual drips are not.

Oil filler cap and dipstick

The filler cap sits on top of the valve cover, usually marked with an oil-can symbol and often the oil grade (like 5W-30). This is where oil goes in. The dipstick — a loop or T-shaped handle, frequently yellow or orange (a different orange; it's plastic, not high-voltage cable) — is how you measure what's in there.

Pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert fully, pull again, read the level between the min and max marks. Healthy oil is amber to dark brown and reaches at least halfway up the marks. Warning signs: level below min, oil that's jet black and gritty, or — the serious one — a milky, mayonnaise-like film under the filler cap, which can mean coolant mixing with oil.

Some cars (many BMWs, some newer models) have deleted the dipstick entirely and show oil level on the dash. Check your handbook if you can't find one.

Coolant expansion tank

A translucent plastic tank, usually off to one side, with MIN and MAX moulded into it and a cap carrying a steam-hazard warning. Coolant — a mix of antifreeze and water — carries heat from the engine to the radiator. It also stops the system freezing in winter and corroding year-round, which is why you can't just use tap water.

Healthy: level between the marks when cold, fluid brightly coloured (pink, orange, blue, or green depending on spec) and clear. Unhealthy: level below min, rusty brown colour, oily film on the surface, or white crusty deposits around the cap — dried coolant marking a slow leak.

The cap stays shut unless the engine is cold. No exceptions. A five-litre jug of ready-mixed coolant runs about €10–20 ($12–23), but the type must match your car — mixing incompatible coolants can gel into sludge.

Brake fluid reservoir

A smaller translucent tank, mounted high on the driver's side against the back wall of the bay (the bulkhead), sitting on top of the brake master cylinder. The cap is usually yellow or black and marked DOT 4 or DOT 5.1.

When you press the brake pedal, this fluid transmits the force to the brakes at each wheel. It's the single most safety-critical fluid in the car, and it has a weakness: it's hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. Water in brake fluid lowers its boiling point, and boiling fluid means a pedal that goes to the floor. That's why brake fluid gets replaced roughly every two years regardless of mileage.

Healthy: level between min and max, fluid pale yellow and clear. Look but don't open — the reservoir is sealed to keep moisture out. A slowly dropping level usually means your brake pads are wearing (the fluid fills the space behind the pistons), and a rapid drop means a leak. Either way: investigate, don't just top up. Washer fluid filler

The cap with the windscreen-and-spray symbol, usually blue. It leads to a tank that's often hidden inside the wing. This is the one fluid you genuinely cannot get wrong: pour in screenwash until it's full.

Use actual screenwash, not just water — it stops the tank freezing and shifts bugs and road film that water smears around. Concentrate costs €3–8 ($4–9) a bottle and dilutes to many litres. In most of Europe, driving with an empty washer system can actually fail you at inspection, and in winter it's a real visibility hazard.

Battery

A plastic box, roughly shoebox-sized, with two terminals: red or + is positive, black or – is negative. It starts the engine and buffers the electrical system. On some cars it hides in the boot or under a seat, with only a remote positive terminal in the bay.

Healthy: clean terminals, secure clamps, no smell. Unhealthy: white or blue-green fluffy corrosion on the terminals (it interferes with charging and starting), a swollen case, or a rotten-egg smell — that last one means stop and get it checked, the battery is failing dangerously.

Batteries last roughly 4–7 years. A standard replacement runs €70–150 ($80–170); cars with start-stop need pricier EFB or AGM batteries at €110–280 ($125–320), and many modern cars need the new battery electronically registered. Fuse box

A rectangular plastic lid, usually near the battery, often with a fuse-layout diagram printed inside the cover. Fuses are sacrificial links: when a circuit draws too much current, the fuse melts instead of the wiring catching fire.

You don't need to touch it today. Just know where it is, because the day your headlights or horn die, a €0.50 fuse is the first suspect. Most cars have a second fuse box inside the cabin.

Air filter box

A black plastic box, about the size of a large lunchbox, with a fat duct running to the engine. Inside is a paper filter that cleans every litre of air the engine breathes — and an engine breathes thousands of litres per minute at speed.

Most airboxes open with simple spring clips or a few screws. Pop it open and look: a healthy filter is white to light grey. A dirty one is dark grey to black, packed with leaves and insects. A clogged filter strangles the engine, hurting fuel economy and throttle response. The part costs €10–30 ($12–35) and swapping it takes five minutes — it's the classic first DIY job precisely because it's hard to get wrong.

Serpentine belt

Peer down the side of the engine (usually the passenger side) and you'll see a single ribbed rubber belt snaking around several pulleys. It's driven by the crankshaft and powers the alternator, water pump on many cars, air-conditioning compressor, and power steering pump where fitted.

If this belt snaps, you lose charging and often cooling within minutes — it's a stop-the-car event. Healthy: quiet, with a smooth ribbed surface. Power steering and transmission dipsticks — sometimes

Two components you may or may not find. Older cars with hydraulic power steering have a small reservoir, cap marked with a steering-wheel symbol; most cars built since the mid-2010s use electric power steering, so there's nothing to check. Automatic cars sometimes have a second, red-handled dipstick for transmission fluid — but most modern automatics are sealed, with no dipstick at all.

If your car doesn't have them, that's not a fault. It's a newer design.

Diesel and hybrid differences

Diesel: the layout is nearly identical. No spark plugs — diesels ignite fuel by compression alone, using glow plugs only to help cold starts. You'll often find a visible fuel filter (diesels are fussy about fuel contamination) and a bulkier engine cover. Every check in this guide applies unchanged.

Hybrid: you get two electrical systems. The normal 12V battery from this tour still exists and still runs the locks, lights, and computers. The traction battery that moves the car is separate, sealed, and connected by those bright orange cables. Touch nothing orange, ever — it's a 200–800 volt system, and it's not a DIY zone at any skill level. The petrol engine side (oil, coolant, filters, belt) checks exactly like any other car.

Your 5-minute monthly bonnet check

Do this once a month, engine cold, car level. Log it and you'll spot trends — a coolant level that drops a little every month is a slow leak telling you about itself early.

  1. Oil — pull the dipstick, wipe, re-dip, read. Between the marks? Good. Note the level.
  2. Coolant — eyeball the expansion tank against min/max. Don't open it.
  3. Brake fluid — eyeball the level. Dropping? Book an inspection.
  4. Washer fluid — top it up. This one's free to get right.
  5. Battery — glance at the terminals for corrosion.
  6. General scan — anything wet, anything frayed, any new smell. Then start the engine and listen for ten seconds: squeals and rattles that weren't there last month are information.

That's it. Six glances, five minutes, and you now know your engine bay better than most drivers ever will.
