Your car doesn't care what the listing says fits it. It cares about one thing: the part number the factory specified for your exact chassis, on your exact build date, with your exact engine code.

Get that number right and parts buying is boring. Get it wrong and you're standing in your driveway on a Sunday with the wrong brake disc and a car on stands.

Here's the system that keeps you out of that driveway.

Your VIN is the source of truth

The model name on the boot lid tells you almost nothing. A single generation of Golf, 3 Series or Focus can hide three different brake disc sizes, two steering racks and half a dozen engine variants — and they all look identical in the car park.

Mid-year revisions make it worse. Manufacturers change suppliers, revise parts and split production runs without telling anyone. A "2018 model" built in November 2017 can take different parts than one built in March 2018.

Your VIN — the 17-character vehicle identification number on the windscreen base, door jamb sticker and registration document — encodes the plant, model year and production sequence. It's the only identifier precise enough to resolve those splits. Every serious parts lookup starts there, not with "Golf Mk7."

Some splits the VIN alone won't resolve — brake size options within the same trim, for example. That's when you measure the old part or read its markings. Which brings us to numbers.

OEM part numbers: find them, keep them

The OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part number is the carmaker's own reference — something like 1K0 615 301 AA for a VW brake disc. It's the Rosetta Stone of parts buying: every decent aftermarket manufacturer publishes cross-references against it.

Three ways to get it:

The dealer parts desk. Call with your VIN and ask for the part number. They'll give it to you free, because they assume you'll buy from them. You don't have to.

Online OEM catalogs. Most brands have their factory parts catalog mirrored online — VAG, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Toyota all have well-known catalog sites where you enter a VIN and browse exploded diagrams. Ten minutes there beats an hour of forum guessing.

The old part itself. Most OE parts carry the number cast, stamped or printed on them. Pull the part, wipe it clean, read the number. This is the most reliable method of all, because it's the part that was actually on your car.

Once you have the number, save it. The tier system, explained honestly

Parts come in four tiers. The industry works hard to blur them. Here they are unblurred.

OEM / genuine (dealer box). The carmaker's logo on the box, bought from a dealer. Guaranteed correct, and priced accordingly. Here's the part the dealer won't volunteer: the carmaker didn't make it. A supplier did.

OES (original equipment supplier). The same supplier that built the part on the assembly line — selling the same part in their own box. Bosch, Denso, Valeo, Sachs, TRW, ATE, Lemförder, the Febi/Bilstein group, NGK, Mann, Mahle. Same factory, often the same production line, no carmaker logo. Typical price: 40–60% below the dealer box for the identical part. This is the sweet spot for almost everything, and it's why knowing the OE number matters — it's how you confirm the match.

One honest caveat: a brand supplying OE for one car doesn't mean every part they sell is OE-spec for your car. Sachs makes the original clutch for some models and a budget line for others. The OE number cross-reference, not the brand name alone, tells you which you're getting.

Quality aftermarket. Brands that didn't supply the original but engineer to (or beyond) OE spec — think Brembo pads for a car that came with ATE, or Bilstein B4 dampers as an OE-equivalent. Fine, sometimes better, usually 30–50% below dealer. The brand's reputation in that specific category is what you're buying.

White-label junk. No-name boxes, brands invented last year, "premium quality" in five fonts. Rotors that warp in a month, ball joints with play out of the box, sensors that throw codes in weeks. The 70% discount isn't a discount — it's the price of doing the job twice.

Where quality matters — and where cheap is fine

Not every part deserves the same budget. Spend where failure is expensive or dangerous; save where it isn't.

Never bottom-tier:

  • Brakes. Pads, discs, hoses. The failure mode is not stopping. If you're doing the work yourself, our guide to changing brake pads covers the job — but it assumes you bought pads worth fitting.
  • Suspension. Ball joints, tie rods, control arm bushings. A €25 ($29) no-name ball joint that separates at motorway speed is the most expensive part you'll ever buy.
  • Timing components. Belt, tensioners, water pump. On an interference engine, a failed €15 ($17) tensioner destroys a €4,000 ($4,700) engine. Full-kit OES (Continental, INA, SKF, Gates) or nothing.
  • Sensors. Crank, cam, O2, ABS. Cheap sensors are the kings of intermittent faults — the ones that strand you twice and diagnose clean both times. Bosch, Denso or NGK/NTK, matched by number.

Cheap is genuinely fine:

  • Filters, within reason. A mid-tier Mann, Mahle, Bosch or Hengst filter costs a few euros more than junk and is worth it — but you don't need the dealer box. Truly no-name oil filters can skip bypass valves; stay mid-tier or above there.
  • Wipers. They're consumables. A €12 ($14) set that lasts a year beats a €35 ($41) set that lasts eighteen months.
  • Bulbs. Standard halogens are commodity items. Philips or Osram from any reputable source; skip the "200% brighter" novelty tiers unless you value them.
  • Trim clips and fasteners. Buy the 100-piece assortment box. The dealer wants €4 ($4.70) per clip for the same nylon.

The logic is consistent: price the failure, not the part. A cheap wiper failing costs you streaks. A cheap brake hose failing costs you a hedge.

Buying online in Europe: catalog sites and their traps

The big European catalog retailers — the ones that let you pick your car by number plate or VIN and then show "parts that fit" — are genuinely useful. They're also where most wrong-part orders happen.

The trap is the "fits your vehicle" list. Plate lookup gets you to the right model and engine, but it often can't see the mid-year splits and option-dependent variants we covered above. The site shows you three brake discs that all "fit"; only one is yours.

The fix takes thirty seconds: every serious catalog listing shows the OE numbers the part cross-references. Check that your confirmed OE number appears in that list before you order. If the listing doesn't show OE cross-references at all, treat that as the answer to whether you should buy from it.

Watch the comparison-number game too. "Comparable to OE 1K0 615 301 AA" is not the same claim as "replaces OE 1K0 615 301 AA." When in doubt, email the seller and ask directly whether the part matches your OE number and VIN — reputable sellers answer, and their answer creates a return obligation if they're wrong.

Counterfeits: the red flags

Fake parts are a real and growing problem, and they concentrate exactly where you'd least want them: spark plugs and brake pads, because both are high-volume, high-margin and easy to copy badly. EU enforcement bodies have flagged counterfeit spare parts — including safety-critical components — as a rising threat, with the overwhelming majority of seizures originating from China, and online marketplaces now the dominant channel.

Red flags, in order of reliability:

  1. The price is too good. Genuine NGK iridium plugs cost what they cost everywhere — roughly €8–15 ($9–18) each. A listing at €4 ($4.70) isn't a bargain; it's a copper-core fake with an iridium label. Fakes run rich in one place: too-cheap listings of premium brands.
  2. Third-party marketplace sellers. "Sold by TechAutoParts2024, fulfilled by [marketplace]" is a different risk profile than buying from the platform's own stock or a brand-authorized dealer. Commingled inventory means even legitimate-looking listings can ship fakes.
  3. Packaging tells. Blurry printing, missing or flat holograms, wrong shade of brand colour, spelling errors, no batch codes. Compare against a photo of genuine packaging from the manufacturer's site — NGK and Bosch both publish counterfeit-spotting guides because the problem is that big.
  4. The part itself. Fake plugs often have rough threads, off-centre electrodes or sloppy printing on the ceramic. If you're unsure when they arrive, compare against a known-genuine one before installing. A fake plug can drop bits of electrode into a cylinder; if your plugs are due anyway, see when to replace spark plugs and buy them from a source you'd bet an engine on — because you are.

Buy like returns are inevitable

Sometimes they are. Even with a perfect OE number, listings have errors, warehouses mis-pick, and revisions slip through. So structure every order to make returns painless:

Order by OE number, in writing. When your order history shows you ordered against a specific OE number for a specific VIN, a wrong part is unambiguously the seller's problem. EU distance-selling rules already give you a 14-day withdrawal right on most online orders; a documented mismatch makes it friction-free.

Keep the old part until the job is done. Not until the box arrives — until the new part is installed and the car runs. The old part is your reference for visual comparison and your fallback if the new one is wrong on a Saturday evening.

Don't fit a suspect part. Most sellers won't take back an installed part. If the new disc's hat height looks wrong next to the old one, stop and check before it touches the hub.

Photograph what arrives. Box, labels, part markings. Ten seconds of photos ends most return disputes before they start.

The mechanics who never get burned on parts aren't lucky. They just refuse to order anything they can't tie to an OE number, and they refuse to install anything they can't verify. Copy that, and the worst parts day you'll ever have is a two-minute return email.
