Ask a forum what maintenance costs per year and you'll get answers from €200 to €3,000 — and every one of them is telling the truth about their car.
The honest answer is a range. This article gives you the range, shows you what moves you inside it, and gives you a budgeting number you can actually use.
All prices are typical European workshop rates for 2025–2026, EUR-first with rough USD equivalents. Your country, your city, and your car will shift them — but the structure holds everywhere.
The short answer
For a mainstream car in Europe, plan on €400–1,200 (~$465–1,400) per year in maintenance, wear items, and repairs combined.
New cars sit at the bottom of that range. Ten-year-old premium cars blow through the top of it.
AAA's 2025 Your Driving Costs study puts maintenance, repair, and tires at 11 cents per mile for a new vehicle — about $1,660 (~€1,430) per 15,000 miles a year, US labor rates included. European independent-shop rates run lower, but European parts pricing and premium-brand market share push many owners right back up.
The number itself matters less than what drives it. Five things decide where you land.
What moves you inside the range
Age. The single biggest factor. A three-year-old car needs oil and inspections. A ten-year-old car needs oil, inspections, and everything that wears out on a schedule nobody printed in your service book.
Mileage. Wear items track kilometers, not birthdays. A 5-year-old car with 160,000 km costs like a 10-year-old car with 80,000 km — sometimes more, because hard use accelerates suspension and drivetrain wear.
Segment. A Toyota Yaris and a BMW 530d both need front brakes. One job costs €250. The other costs €600. Same physics, different invoice.
Dealer vs. independent. German dealer labor runs €100–180/hour; independents charge €60–100. Independent workshops typically come in 30–50% cheaper on the same job, and outside warranty there's rarely a reason to pay the premium.

Annual cost bands by vehicle age
These bands cover scheduled service, wear items, and typical repairs for a mainstream (non-premium) car at independent-shop rates. Premium adds 50–100% — see the next section.

Years 0–5 are the cheap ones, and they're supposed to be. A small inspection runs €150–300, a major one €400–800, an oil change €80–200. If your five-year-old car is costing more than this, something specific is wrong — find it.
Years 5–10 are when the wear items queue up. Front pads and discs (€250–500), a battery (€100–250), a set of tires (€400–800), shock absorbers (€300–700 per axle), the first timing belt on many engines (€400–1,200). None of these are failures. They're consumables with long fuses, and the fuses start burning out together.
Years 10+ are the surprise years. The baseline service cost doesn't change much — but now you add genuine repairs: a clutch (€800–2,000), an AC compressor, a corroded exhaust, an electrical gremlin that eats two hours of diagnostic time at €90/hour before anyone touches a part. Consumer Reports' owner data shows costs climbing sharply once the warranty era ends, typically from year three to five onward, and never coming back down.
One caveat that matters: the 10+ band has the widest spread. A rust-free, maintained Toyota at year 14 can undercut the 5–10 band. A neglected French diesel at year 11 can double it.

The premium multiplier is real and it compounds. Consumer Reports' 2025 owner data puts Toyota's 10-year maintenance and repair total at roughly $5,950 (~€5,100) — while BMW and Audi approach $10,000 (~€8,600) and Land Rover hits $19,250 (~€16,600). That's not one expensive part. That's every part, every hour, every visit costing more.
And modern premium adds a third multiplier: complexity. ADAC's repair-cost analysis found a single BMW 330e laser headlight costs around €3,300 net as a spare part, and recalibrating the front camera after a windshield swap on a Golf or A3 adds roughly €825 net — for a sensor check, not a repair. The badge tax now extends to jobs that used to be trivial.
Tires scale with segment too, silently. Four 15-inch city-car tires: €300. Four 20-inch SUV tires: €900+. Same 40,000 km lifespan.
Three budget lines, not one
Most people track "car costs" as one bucket, and that's why every big bill feels like a betrayal. There are three separate lines:

2. Wear items — the semi-predictable one. Brakes, tires, battery, wipers, suspension components, clutch. You don't know the exact month, but you can see them coming: pads at 4 mm, tires at 3 mm, a battery past year six. The mileage-based checklist tells you when to start looking.
3. Repairs — the lumpy one. Failed sensors, leaks, electrical faults, the water pump that didn't wait for the timing belt interval. Unpredictable individually, statistically inevitable in aggregate. This line is near-zero for five years, then it's a third of your budget.
Conflating the three is how a €1,400 year convinces people their car is "becoming a money pit" when it's actually just a normal car doing normal 10-year-old-car things. Separate the lines and the pattern gets obvious: line 1 is flat, line 2 is periodic, line 3 grows with age.
The budgeting rule of thumb
Two rules, use whichever fits how you think:
The monthly reserve. Set aside a fixed amount every month, spend from the pot:

The percentage rule. Budget roughly 1.5–2% of the vehicle's current value per year for a newer car — but abandon it below about €8,000 of value. A €4,000 car does not cost €80 a year to maintain; it costs €800–1,200, because brake discs don't check your car's book value before wearing out. The reserve model wins for one reason: it converts lumpy spending into flat spending. The €1,400 timing-belt-plus-water-pump year stops being an emergency and becomes a withdrawal.
Why averages lie to you
Your last four years of maintenance spending probably looked something like: €200, €180, €1,400, €250.
Average: €508. Number of years you actually spent €508: zero.
This is why per-mile and per-year averages — AAA's included — are fine for comparing vehicles and useless for budgeting. Maintenance is lumpy by nature. Wear items cluster (brakes, tires, and battery all mature around the same mileage), and big scheduled jobs like timing belts land in a single month.
An average also hides the trend. €250 → €400 → €700 over three years is a car telling you something. Averaged, it's just "€450/year, seems fine."

DIY: the biggest lever you have
Workshop bills are mostly labor. That makes labor-heavy, skill-light jobs the highest-leverage DIY targets:

Quality aftermarket parts (ATE, Bosch, Mahle, Mann) widen the gap further — typically 20–60% cheaper than OEM-boxed identical parts.
Know where the leverage stops, though. Timing belts, clutches, anything needing calibration, coding, or a lift: the shop's €90/hour buys tools, experience, and a warranty on the work. DIY wins on jobs where labor is the cost. It loses on jobs where risk is.
The takeaway
Budget €50–100 a month for a mainstream car, €100–150 for old or premium metal. Track the three budget lines separately. Expect the lumpy year — it's not a failure, it's the schedule.
