The Mazda CX-5 (KE 2013–2016, KF 2017+) is one of the best-driving compact SUVs you can buy, and it's reliable on a sensible schedule. The catch with the CX-5 specifically is the all-wheel-drive system: it adds two fluid services that most owners — and plenty of quick-lube shops — never touch. Get the oil and the AWD fluids right and the CX-5 is a 200,000-mile vehicle.
Oil Changes — 2.0, 2.5, and the 2.5T Turbo
All CX-5 engines take 0W-20 full synthetic; the interval is what differs in practice.
- 2.0L / 2.5L SkyActiv-G (most CX-5s): 0W-20, every 5,000 miles in real-world driving. Mazda's monitor may extend toward 7,500 — acceptable for steady highway use, but 5,000 is the safer default.
- 2.5T Turbo (Signature, GT Turbo, 2019+): 0W-20, a strict 5,000 miles. The turbo adds heat and boost pressure; don't stretch this interval, and run premium fuel for full power.
- Cold-climate / short-trip use: check the dipstick for fuel dilution (a rising level or gasoline smell) and shorten the interval if present.
AWD: The Rear Differential and Transfer Case Fluids Everyone Forgets
This is the section that sets the CX-5 apart from a front-wheel-drive Mazda3 or Mazda6.
- Rear differential fluid: change roughly every 40,000–60,000 miles. It's a small, inexpensive service that prevents whine, wear, and eventual rear-diff failure.
- Transfer case / PTU fluid: the power take-off unit that feeds the rear axle also needs periodic fluid service on a similar interval. It runs hot and is frequently ignored until it's noisy.
- Why it matters: Mazda's AWD is reactive and generally trouble-free, but only if these fluids are maintained. Replacing a neglected rear diff or PTU costs far more than the fluid services would have.
- Symptoms of neglect: a hum or whine that rises with speed, or a shudder in tight turns. Don't wait for these — service the fluids on schedule.
Transmission Fluid and DI Carbon Buildup
- SkyActiv-Drive automatic: change FZ ATF around 60,000 miles despite the "lifetime" label. Sooner if you tow or load the CX-5 heavily. This prevents torque-converter shudder and harsh shifts.
- Direct-injection carbon: like all SkyActiv-G engines, the CX-5 accumulates carbon on the intake valves over time. Expect a possible walnut-shell cleaning around 80,000–100,000 miles; slow it with Top Tier fuel and on-time oil changes.
Spark Plugs, Brake Fluid, and Filters
- Spark plugs: iridium plugs around 75,000 miles on naturally aspirated engines; inspect the 2.5T at 45,000–60,000 miles.
- Brake fluid: every 2 years regardless of mileage — time-based and not flagged by any dashboard reminder.
- Air filter: every 30,000 miles (sooner in dust); cabin filter every 15,000–25,000 miles.
- Coolant: Mazda FL22 long-life — first change far out (around 10 years/120,000 miles), then a shorter cycle.
Intervals are based on Mazda factory service documents and real-world guidance from CX-5 owner communities. The AWD fluid services are emphasized because they're both genuinely required and routinely missed.
A CX-5 maintained with 0W-20 at 5,000 miles, AWD fluids every 40,000–60,000 miles, FZ ATF at 60,000, and two-year brake fluid will stay quiet, tight, and dependable well past 200,000 miles.
