Overheating is the classic case where continuing to drive multiplies the bill. A $30 hose or a $150 thermostat, driven on, becomes a warped head or blown head gasket. Pull over, shut down, and let it cool before doing anything else.

What it means

Your engine runs within a narrow temperature window, managed by the cooling system: coolant, radiator, water pump, thermostat, and fans. When the gauge climbs into the red, a temperature warning light comes on, or steam rises from the hood, that system has failed somewhere — and aluminum engine components tolerate very little time above their limit.

The immediate protocol matters more than the diagnosis: pull over safely, switch off, and do not open the radiator cap while hot — the system is pressurized and can scald you. Diagnosis starts after it cools.

DIY checks before the shop

  1. After the engine is fully cool (give it 30+ minutes), check the coolant level in the overflow tank — and only open the radiator cap if the system is cold.
  2. Look under the car and around hoses, the radiator, and the water pump area for coolant traces (often green, orange, or pink, with a sweet smell).
  3. Watch the pattern: overheats in traffic but not on the highway suggests the fan; overheats everywhere suggests thermostat, coolant loss, or pump.
  4. Check whether the cabin heater blows hot with the engine warm — a heater that suddenly blows cold can indicate low coolant.
  5. Do not just top up and keep driving without finding where the coolant went — it will happen again, possibly further from home.

Can I drive a short distance while overheating?

The honest answer: every minute in the red risks the head gasket. If you must move the car, short hops with full cool-down between them are less bad than pushing on — but a tow is the right call.

Does turning on the heater help?

It can, a little — the heater core sheds some engine heat into the cabin. It's a limp-to-safety measure, not a fix.

Why does it only overheat in traffic?

At speed, airflow through the radiator does the cooling; in traffic, the electric fan has to do it. Overheating only at idle or in stop-and-go strongly suggests the fan isn't running.

Can I use water instead of coolant in an emergency?

As a get-to-the-shop emergency measure in mild weather, plain water in the overflow tank is far better than driving hot. Have the system properly filled and bled with correct coolant afterwards.
