Your cabin air filter is the cheapest, easiest job on the entire car — and one of the most profitable line items on a shop invoice. The part costs €10–25 ($12–28). The work takes 10 minutes with no tools on most cars. Shops routinely charge €40–80 ($45–90) for exactly that.

What the cabin filter actually does

Every litre of air that enters your cabin through the ventilation system passes through this filter first. It traps pollen, road dust, brake dust, soot, and — on carbon versions — exhaust fumes before they reach your lungs.

When it clogs, three things happen. Airflow from the vents drops, because the blower is fighting a wall of packed dirt. Your windows fog up and stay fogged, because the demister can't push enough dry air at the glass. And the car starts to smell musty, because a damp filter full of organic debris is an excellent home for mould and bacteria.

The interval: 15,000 km or one year — usually

Most manufacturers specify replacement every 15,000 km or annually, whichever comes first. Treat that as the maximum, not a target.

The interval isn't about the filter media wearing out. It's about how much dirt has hit it. A motorway commuter in clean air might genuinely get a year out of a filter. A city driver breathing diesel soot in stop-and-go traffic loads the same filter in six months.

Filter manufacturers and air-quality specialists increasingly recommend twice-yearly changes for exactly this reason: once before spring, so allergy sufferers get a fresh filter ahead of pollen season, and once before winter, when you need maximum demisting airflow. At €10 a filter, that's €20 a year for clean air and clear glass. Do the math against one shop visit.

Change it more often if you: drive mainly in cities, park under trees (leaf litter and organic debris), live on dusty or unpaved roads, or have hay fever.

Which filter to buy

There are three tiers, and they all fit the same slot in your car:

Standard particulate (€8–15 / $9–17). Pleated paper or fleece. Traps pollen, dust, and coarse soot particles. Perfectly fine for rural and motorway driving.

Activated carbon (€15–30 / $17–34). Same particle filtration plus a layer of activated charcoal that adsorbs gases: exhaust odours, ozone, and some nitrogen oxides. If you regularly sit in traffic behind other cars' exhaust pipes, spend the extra €10. You'll notice the difference in tunnel and traffic-jam smells within the first week.

HEPA-class / high-efficiency (€25–50 / $28–56). Marketed for capturing ultrafine particles and allergens at higher efficiency, often with carbon included. Worth considering for severe allergy sufferers; not available for every model.

Buy by exact model, year, and sometimes engine variant — use the filter-finder on any parts site (Bosch, MANN, Mahle, and Corteco are the big European OE-quality brands). A filter that's 5 mm too small leaks unfiltered air around its edges and filters nothing properly.

The classic job: behind the glovebox

On most cars built since the mid-2000s — Toyotas, Hondas, Hyundais, Mazdas, most Nissans, and plenty of European models — the filter lives in the HVAC housing directly behind the glovebox. No tools needed.

Empty the glovebox. Everything out. You're about to swing it upside down.

Release the glovebox. Open it fully, then squeeze both side walls inward toward each other. The plastic stops that limit its travel will clear the frame, and the box swings down past its normal open position. Some cars use small rubber or plastic stops you pop off instead, and a few use two visible screws.

Unhook the damper arm. Many gloveboxes have a small plastic arm on the right side — a damper that makes the box open smoothly instead of flopping down. Slide it off its peg. Don't force it; it lifts off with light pressure.

Find the filter cover. With the glovebox hanging down, you'll see a rectangular plastic panel on the housing behind it, roughly the size of a paperback book. It's held by clips you squeeze or a couple of small screws.

Slide out the old filter. Pull it straight out. Do this gently and hold it flat — a year of dust wants to fall on your carpet. Take a photo of it before it moves, so you have a record of the airflow-arrow orientation.

Look at what came out. A used filter is genuinely shocking the first time: grey with soot, embedded leaves, dead insects, sometimes acorns from an ambitious rodent. That's what you've been breathing through.

Clean the housing. Vacuum or hand-pull any leaves and debris from the empty slot. Debris left behind ends up in the blower fan.

Insert the new filter. Match the airflow arrow on the new filter's frame to the direction the old one pointed — on behind-glovebox installations that's usually arrow pointing down, because the blower pulls air downward through the filter. Backwards won't break anything, but the filter loads unevenly and can release trapped dirt.

Reassemble. Cover on until it clicks, damper arm back on its peg, squeeze the glovebox sides and swing it back up.

Test. Ignition on, fan to maximum. Airflow should be noticeably stronger than before — often dramatically so if the old filter was packed.

Total time: 10–15 minutes, most of it spent finding the clips the first time. The second time you'll do it in five.

Other locations: scuttle panel and under the dash

Not every car puts the filter behind the glovebox. Two other common spots:

Under the bonnet, beneath the scuttle panel. The filter sits in a slot at the base of the windscreen, accessed by removing part of the plastic scuttle (cowl) trim — sometimes the wiper arms too. Common on older VW Group cars (Golf Mk4, and many Passats), various Peugeots and Citroëns, and some Fords. Still an easy job, but budget 20–30 minutes and check whether you need a Torx driver for the trim screws.

Under the dash, at a kick panel or footwell. The filter slides into the housing from below, behind a small panel near the pedals or the passenger footwell — no glovebox removal, but you're working upside down by feel. The Ford Focus Mk1 is the notorious example (filter behind the pedals), and several Renaults hide it behind a panel beside the centre console. Awkward, not difficult.

Not sure which you have? Check the owner's manual index under "pollen filter," "microfilter," or "cabin air filter" — all three names mean the same part. A two-minute search for your exact model plus "cabin filter location" almost always turns up a photo guide, because someone has already done your car.

The shop upsell, quantified

Here's why this job headlines every service advisor's checklist: it's the highest-margin ten minutes in the building.

Part cost to you: €10–25 ($12–28). Shop charge: €40–80 ($45–90), and dealer quotes over €100 aren't rare. Industry cost trackers put the typical shop total at $78–106 in the US — for a job with 10–20 minutes of labour on glovebox-access cars.

The shop isn't scamming you; labour rates are real. But this specific job has no torque specs, no fluids, no lifting, and no way to strand yourself. It is the definitional DIY task. Doing it yourself twice a year saves €60–130 annually, and more importantly, it teaches you that the plastic panels in your car come apart and go back together — the gateway skill for everything else on this path.
