Car Won't Start — No Click, No Crank
Car is already stopped — work through the checks in order
Silence is actually a useful symptom: it narrows things to the power supply, the security/immobiliser system, or the small switches that allow starting. Several of the most common causes are free to check.
What it means
When you turn the key or press the start button and absolutely nothing happens — no click, no crank, maybe not even dash lights — the starting circuit isn't receiving power or permission. 'Power' problems are the battery, terminals, and cables. 'Permission' problems are the neutral safety switch (automatics), clutch switch (manuals), immobiliser/anti-theft system, or a dead key fob battery on push-button cars.
The state of the dashboard is the fork in the road: completely dead dash = power problem; normal dash but silence when you crank = permission or starter-circuit problem.
Likely causes
| Cause | Likelihood | Severity |
|---|---|---|
| Dead battery or disconnected/corroded terminal If the dash is dead too, start here. | Most common | Moderate |
| Key fob battery dead / immobiliser not recognising key Push-button cars often show a key warning icon. Many have a backup procedure — hold the fob against a marked spot (check your manual). | Common | Minor |
| Neutral safety switch or clutch switch Try starting in Neutral instead of Park, or double-check the clutch is fully pressed — a classic and free test. | Common | Minor |
| Blown fuse or failed starter relay Cheap parts in the fuse box; the relay can sometimes be swapped with an identical neighbour to test. | Common | Minor |
| Failed ignition switch Dash lights may flicker or vary with key position. | Less common | Moderate |
| Starter circuit wiring fault Including rodent-chewed wiring — more common than people expect. | Less common | Moderate |
DIY checks before the shop
- Check the dash: totally dead means battery/terminals; normal dash means the crank signal isn't getting through.
- Try starting in Neutral (automatics) or with the clutch pressed harder/fully (manuals) — tests the safety switches for free.
- For push-button cars: try the manufacturer's dead-fob backup procedure from your manual, or a spare fob.
- Inspect battery terminals — wiggle them; a loose terminal can kill everything.
- Check the starter fuse and relay in the fuse box (locations are on the fuse box lid or in the manual).
- Listen for the fuel pump prime (a brief hum when switching ignition on) — its absence with a dead-silent crank suggests power or immobiliser issues.
What repairs typically cost
| Repair | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Fob battery The cheapest fix in car repair. | Roughly $3–$10 DIY |
| Battery / terminals See the clicking no-start page for details. | Free–$300 |
| Starter relay or fuse Plus diagnosis if it keeps blowing. | Roughly $5–$50 DIY |
| Neutral safety / clutch switch Usually a small part with modest labor. | Roughly $50–$300 |
| Ignition switch Varies by vehicle, more on cars where it's integrated with the lock or column. | Roughly $150–$500 |
Ranges are broad US-typical estimates for common vehicles at independent shops. Luxury brands, dealers, and regional labor rates can land well outside them — treat these as orientation, not quotes.

Frequently asked questions
Dash lights work but nothing happens when I crank — battery?
Probably not the battery alone. A working dash with total cranking silence points at the permission chain: safety switches, immobiliser, relay, or the starter signal wiring.
Why does it start in Neutral but not Park?
That's the neutral safety switch (or shifter position sensor) failing or misadjusted. It's a known workaround and a real diagnosis — replace the switch.
Could it be the anti-theft system?
Yes — a key or security warning icon on the dash while cranking silence occurs points there. Try the spare key; if the spare works, the first key's chip or battery is the problem.
