Peugeot maintenance is a tale of one engine. Get the 1.2 PureTech's wet belt story right and a 208, 2008 or 308 is a cheap, pleasant car to run. Get it wrong and you're pricing up a replacement engine. This guide covers the real intervals — not the optimistic ones in the service book — for the engines you'll actually find in a 208, 2008, 308, 3008 or 508.
The service book vs. reality
Peugeot's official schedule for most petrol models is generous: up to 25,000 km (15,500 miles) or two years between services on the long-life regime. Diesels officially stretch similarly far.
Ignore it. Long-life servicing is priced for fleet spreadsheets, not engine longevity. On the PureTech specifically, old oil is what kills the timing belt. The regime that keeps these engines alive:
- Oil and filter: every 10,000–15,000 km (6,000–9,000 miles) or 12 months. Urban short-trip cars at the bottom of that range.
- Air filter: every 30,000 km (19,000 miles).
- Brake fluid: every 2 years, regardless of mileage.
- Coolant: check at every service; replace around 100,000 km (62,000 miles).
- Cabin filter: annually. Cheap, and Peugeot HVAC systems get musty without it.
Annual servicing costs €120–180 ($130–195) at a decent independent, €200–300 ($215–325) at a dealer. On a car still inside the PureTech extended warranty window, pay for documented servicing to the correct spec — the warranty depends on it.
The 1.2 PureTech wet belt: the whole story
The EB2 PureTech three-cylinder — in almost every petrol 208, 2008, 308 and 3008 since 2014 — runs its timing belt inside the engine, bathed in oil. Belt-in-oil cuts friction and noise. It also means the belt's rubber compound lives in hot oil for years, and the original compound couldn't take it.
The belt swells, softens and sheds. Shed rubber does two things, both bad. It clogs the oil pump pickup strainer, starving the engine of oil pressure — that's the "low oil pressure — STOP" warning owners report, sometimes seconds before a wrecked engine. And the contaminated oil confuses the variable valve timing system, throwing camshaft position faults (P0340/P0341) and rough running. Belts have failed at 60,000 km on engines with a theoretical 175,000 km interval.
The numbers that matter:
- Original interval: 10 years / 175,000 km (109,000 miles). Fantasy.
- Revised official interval: 6 years / 100,000 km (62,000 miles), whichever comes first.
- What specialists actually do: 4–6 years or 60,000–100,000 km, earlier for short-trip urban cars where fuel dilutes the oil.
- Extended warranty: announced March 2024 — 10 years or 175,000 km on 1.2 PureTech engines built April 2014 to June 2022, covering belt degradation and consequential damage, conditional on documented servicing through approved channels.
The oil spec is non-negotiable: 0W-30 meeting PSA B71 2010 (ACEA C2). The belt compound and the oil chemistry have to match. A bargain 5W-40 from a quick-lube shop is genuinely worse than useless here.
Why the fuss ends: from 2023, the third-generation EB2 — launched with the 48V mild-hybrid powertrains (Hybrid 100/136) — switched to a timing chain. But Stellantis sold old and new generations side by side for a while, so a 2023–2024 non-hybrid car can still be a belt engine. Confirm by engine code or VIN, not by model year.
Replacement cost: €450–800 ($490–870) at an independent for the belt kit, tensioner, oil and filter. Against a €6,000+ engine, it's the best money you'll spend on the car.
1.6 THP (Prince): three known enemies
The 1.6 THP petrol — 308 GT/GTi, older 3008 and 508, RCZ — is the BMW co-developed Prince engine. Strong, characterful, and needy in three specific ways:
Timing chain stretch. The death-rattle on cold start is the tell. Early engines (pre-2011 especially) stretched chains and wore tensioners; later revisions improved it but didn't cure it. A rattling chain is a €600–900 ($650–980) job. Ignored, the chain jumps and you're into valves and pistons.
Carbon buildup. Direct injection means no fuel washing the intake valves. By 100,000–120,000 km the valves are coked, costing you throttle response, economy and smooth idle. Walnut blasting runs €300–450 ($325–490) and transforms tired THPs.
Turbo oil feed. The turbo's oil feed pipe cokes up with infrequent oil changes, starving the turbo. All three problems share one prevention: oil changes every 10,000 km maximum, quality LL-04/C3-grade oil, no exceptions.
1.5 BlueHDi: good engine, fussy plumbing
The 1.5 BlueHDi diesel (DV5) is mechanically one of Peugeot's better recent efforts. Its problems are peripheral:
The 7 mm camshaft chain. Engines built October 2017 to January 2023 use a small chain between the camshafts that wears prematurely. Stellantis fits an updated 8 mm version — roughly €1,200–2,000 ($1,300–2,180) done preventively, €3,000+ if it lets go — and from mid-2025 backs affected engines with coverage up to 10 years/240,000 km with compliant servicing. After the fix, the mandatory oil is 5W-30 to spec FPW9.55535/03.
AdBlue system. The injector and lines crystallize, the tank heater and pump fail, and a fault starts a legally mandated countdown to a no-start. Use certified AdBlue, keep the tank above roughly 20%, and budget €400–800 ($435–870) when — not if — a component needs attention on a higher-mileage car.
DPF reality. A diesel doing school runs will clog its particulate filter. The DPF needs regular 20+ minute runs at motorway speed to regenerate. If your driving is genuinely urban, you bought the wrong engine — the PureTech (post-fix) or a hybrid suits you better. Forced regeneration or cleaning costs €150–400 ($165–435); a new DPF is €800–2,500 ($870–2,720).
Timing belt: officially long-lived, but replace by 120,000–150,000 km (75,000–93,000 miles) or 8 years. €650–950 ($710–1,030) independent.
EAT6/EAT8: the "lifetime fluid" myth
The Aisin-built EAT6 and EAT8 automatics are genuinely good gearboxes, and Peugeot calls the fluid "filled for life." Translation: filled for the warranty period. Automatic transmission fluid shears and oxidizes like any oil. By 120,000 km on original fluid you'll feel it — hesitant downshifts, a clunky 2–3 change when cold.
Change the fluid every 60,000–80,000 km (37,000–50,000 miles). It's €250–400 ($270–435) with the correct fluid at an independent who knows the fill-level procedure (it's temperature-dependent — this is not a DIY drain-and-guess job). Cheap insurance on a gearbox that costs €4,000+ to replace.
Suspension and the rest
Modern Peugeots use simple, cheap-to-fix suspension: MacPherson struts up front, a torsion beam at the rear on 208/2008/308. Wear items to watch:
- Front drop links and anti-roll bar bushes: first to knock, often by 60,000–80,000 km. €80–150 ($85–165) a side, fitted.
- Rear beam bushes: wear by 120,000 km+; vague rear-end feel and uneven inner tyre wear are the signs.
- The old rear-beam horror stories — seized trailing-arm bearings that wrote off 106s, 206s and 306s — don't apply to the current torsion beam design. If you're shopping pre-2010 Peugeots, budget for it; on anything in this guide, don't lose sleep.
Front discs and pads typically last 50,000–70,000 km and cost €200–300 ($215–325) an axle at an independent.
What it actually costs per year
Realistic independent-garage prices for a PureTech 208/2008 in Western Europe, 2025–2026:

Averaged out, a well-kept PureTech runs €500–700 ($540–760) a year in maintenance including the amortized belt — Golf money, not premium-brand money.
Where Peugeot really stands on reliability
Honestly: mid-field, improving. In recent TÜV reports the current-generation 208 and 2008 sit respectably in their age classes — build quality under Stellantis is visibly better than the PSA cars of the early 2010s, and the electrified models have been solid. What drags the brand's numbers is history: wet-belt-era engines failing out of warranty, and older cars showing suspension and oil-leak defects at inspection.
The pattern is clear, though. Peugeot's problems are known, specific and preventable — a belt, a chain, a fluid, an oil spec. That's a better position than vague, random unreliability. A PureTech with a documented belt change and annual oil services is a fundamentally different ownership proposition from the same car run on the long-life schedule.
The hard part is proving it — to yourself when intervals come due, and to the next buyer when you sell.
