Renault builds cars that reward owners who service them properly and punish owners who trust the marketing. The official schedules stretch to 30,000 km between oil changes on some engines. Some Renault engines tolerate that. At least one absolutely does not. This guide tells you which is which — for the Clio, Captur, Megane, Kadjar, Austral and Scenic — and what maintenance actually costs in Europe.

The official intervals — and when to ignore them

Recent Renault petrol engines (1.0 TCe, 1.3 TCe) carry an EU schedule of 30,000 km (18,000 miles) or 2 years for oil changes. Diesels and older engines run 15,000–20,000 km (9,000–12,500 miles) or 1 year. Major service items — filters, plugs, brake fluid — fall at 30,000–60,000 km checkpoints.

Here's the problem: 30,000 km intervals are calculated for motorway-heavy, warm-engine driving. A Captur doing school runs and supermarket trips never gets its oil hot enough to boil off fuel and condensation. That oil is dead long before 30,000 km — and on Renault's chain-driven and wet-belt engines, dead oil kills expensive parts.

The rule for any Renault: 15,000 km (9,000 miles) or 12 months, whichever comes first. On the engines below, you'll see why that's not paranoia.

1.2 TCe (H5Ft): the one you need to know about

Fitted to the Clio, Captur, Megane, Kadjar and Scenic from roughly 2012 to 2016, the 1.2 TCe four-cylinder turbo is Renault's biggest modern liability. It spawned owner groups and legal action in France, and the reasons are mechanical, not anecdotal.

Two linked failures. First, piston ring and bore tolerances were too loose from the factory, so oil migrates into the combustion chamber. Bad examples burn more than 1 litre per 1,000 km. Burning oil coats the exhaust valves, raises combustion temperatures, and accelerates wear everywhere downstream — including the turbo, which shares that oil supply.

Second, the "lifetime" timing chain isn't. Chains stretch from around 80,000–100,000 km (50,000–62,000 miles), helped along by tensioners that lose grip and oil contaminated by the consumption problem. The warning is a metallic rattle on cold start. Ignore it and the timing jumps, valves meet pistons, and you're looking at €3,000–€5,500 for a rebuild or €6,000–€8,000 for a replacement engine. A chain kit caught in time runs €800–€1,200.

If you own one: check the dipstick every 500 km, log every top-up, change oil at 10,000 km maximum, and get the ECU updates Renault issued. If you're buying one, walk away from any example without a folder of receipts.

0.9 TCe: honest little three-cylinder

The 898 cc H4Bt three-cylinder in the Clio and Captur avoided its big brother's disaster. It's chain-driven with no design-level timing fault. Weak points are cheap ones: ignition coils, occasional EGR and modest oil consumption on hard-driven cars. Give it 15,000 km oil changes with the correct low-SAPS synthetic and fresh plugs at 60,000 km, and it'll do 250,000 km. Thrash it cold and lug it at low revs, and any small turbo triple will suffer — that's physics, not Renault.

1.3 TCe (H5Ht): good engine, oil-dependent chain

Co-developed with Daimler (Mercedes fits it as the M282), the 1.3 TCe replaced the 1.2 from 2018 in the Clio, Captur, Megane, Kadjar and Austral. It's a substantially better engine — no systemic oil consumption fault, plenty of examples past 160,000 km without drama.

It runs a timing chain rated "for life," and here's where interval honesty matters. Renault's EU schedule allows 30,000 km between oil changes. The chain, its tensioner and the turbo bearings all live on that oil. Every stretched-chain 1.3 TCe I've seen the history on shares one thing: long intervals, short trips. Change the oil every 15,000 km or annually with the RN17-approved spec and the "lifetime" claim becomes true. Stretch it and you're running an experiment with a €1,000+ chain job as the losing outcome.

Same logic applies to the newer 1.0 TCe three-cylinder in the Clio V and Captur II — with higher stakes, because it uses a belt-in-oil (wet belt) rated at 160,000 km or 6 years. Wet belts shed rubber into the oil when they degrade, clogging the pickup. Treat 6 years as a hard deadline, inspect from 100,000 km, and never skip an oil change. Replacement runs €650–€850; a starved engine costs €3,000+.

1.5 dCi (K9K): legendary, with three conditions

The 1.5 dCi diesel has powered practically everything Renault (and Nissan, and Dacia) built for two decades. Well-maintained examples pass 400,000 km. But its reputation rests on three specific care points.

Injectors. The common-rail system is sensitive to fuel quality. Buy diesel from busy stations, and if you get a rough idle or a rattly knock under load, get the injectors tested before one washes a bore. €250–€400 per injector.

Turbo oil feed. Early and mid-life K9Ks are known for turbo failures caused not by the turbo but by a coking-prone oil feed pipe. When a turbo is replaced without the pipe, the new turbo dies too. Fresh oil on 15,000 km intervals is the prevention; if you ever do a turbo, the feed pipe is non-negotiable.

The DPF and city driving. A dCi that never sees 20 minutes of sustained running can't complete DPF regeneration. The filter loads, forces aggressive regens, dilutes the oil with diesel, and eventually clogs — €1,000–€2,000 to replace. If your driving is urban, the honest answer is: don't buy the diesel. Buy the TCe or the hybrid.

Timing belts: the deadlines that matter

Renault's belt engines give you a date and a distance. Respect whichever arrives first — belts age chemically even parked in a garage.

  • 1.5 dCi (K9K): 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or 6 years on later versions; earlier cars specified 120,000 km (75,000 miles) or 5 years. Check your handbook, not the forum.
  • 1.6 16v (K4M) and other older petrols: typically 120,000 km (75,000 miles) or 6 years; some schedules say 90,000 km (56,000 miles). When in doubt, do it early — an interference engine doesn't grade on a curve.

Always replace the water pump (belt-driven; a seizing pump snaps a new belt), tensioners, and the accessory belt in the same job — on the K9K the accessory belt can shred and get dragged into the timing case, wrecking the timing anyway. Doing it all at once adds maybe €80 in parts to a job that's mostly labour.

Gearboxes: EDC, CVT, manual

EDC dual-clutch. Renault calls the dry-clutch EDC6 fluid "lifetime." Specialists who rebuild these boxes recommend fluid every 60,000 km (37,000 miles), about €150–€250 — cheap insurance against the jerky low-speed shifts, overheating warnings and mechatronic failures these boxes are known for. Wet-clutch EDC7 units (stronger diesels, Austral) definitely need scheduled fluid. Avoid holding the car on the clutch on hills; that's what cooks them in traffic.

CVT (older Scenic/Megane, X-Tronic on some Kadjars): fluid every 60,000 km with the exact specified CVT fluid. Wrong fluid ruins the variator.

Manuals: officially sealed for life. A €90 fluid change at 100,000 km makes an old Renault box shift like a newer one. Clutches typically last 150,000–200,000 km.

E-Tech hybrid (Clio, Captur, Austral, Scenic-era hybrids): the multimode gearbox is a clutchless dog-box with F1 ancestry — no clutch pack, no torque converter, almost nothing to wear. Combined with regenerative braking that can double brake life, E-Tech models are the cheapest Renaults to run. Keep the oil changes and coolant service on schedule; check brake discs annually anyway, because lightly-used discs corrode.

Electrics: the Renault tax

Budget for small electrical annoyances; they're part of ownership. Window regulators are a classic failure on Clio, Megane and Scenic — the cable mechanism frays and the glass drops into the door (€100–€200 fixed with a pattern part). The Megane II/Laguna II-era keycards wear out, delaminate and lose buttons; a replacement card runs €150–€250 at a dealer, so keep the spare working and swap its battery yearly. Add the occasional parking sensor, tailgate wiring on hatchbacks, and dashboard warnings that turn out to be a €40 sensor. None of it strands you; all of it belongs in the budget.

A petrol Clio or Captur on the honest 15,000 km schedule averages €400–€600 per year. A dCi doing proper mileage costs similar but carries the DPF and injector risk if misused. The 1.2 TCe is the wildcard — fine examples cost the same as any TCe, bad ones cost an engine.

Track it or lose track of it

Every expensive Renault failure in this guide has the same prehistory: nobody could say when the oil was last changed or how much had been topped up between services. The fix is boring — write everything down.
