A Dacia is proven Renault hardware, one generation behind, sold at half the price. That's the whole engineering story. The 1.5 dCi in a Duster is the same K9K that powered a decade of Clios and Meganes. The suspension is simple MacPherson struts and a torsion beam. Nothing is exotic, everything is cheap, and every mechanic from Lisbon to Varna has fixed one.
Which means the maintenance is the value proposition. A Dacia that gets its oil and belt on time is arguably the cheapest car to run in Europe. A Dacia that doesn't is a scrapped engine in a car that was never worth enough to justify a replacement. The margin for neglect is the one thing you didn't pay for.
The service interval argument: 15,000 km, not 30,000
Dacia's official schedule in most EU markets is a service every 12 months or 15,000 km (9,300 miles), whichever comes first. You'll see claims — including from some dealers — that newer petrol engines can stretch to 30,000 km (18,600 miles) or two years on long-life oil.
Ignore the long claim. Here's why.
Most Dacias live hard lives: short urban trips, cold starts, cheap fuel, and — in the LPG versions — gas combustion that runs hotter than petrol. Long-life intervals were validated for motorway-cruising fleet cars, not a Sandero doing 6 km school runs in a Sofia winter. Oil that's 24 months old is full of condensation and fuel dilution regardless of what the counter says.
There's a second, Dacia-specific reason: the 1.0 TCe runs its timing belt in the oil. Degraded oil doesn't just wear bearings on that engine — it eats the belt. More on that below.
Stick to 12 months / 15,000 km. On the 1.5 dCi doing mostly city work, 10,000 km (6,200 miles) is smarter. An oil service costs €70–120 at an independent. It's the cheapest insurance in motoring.
Engine by engine: what you have and what it needs
1.0 SCe 65 / TCe 90 (current Sandero, Logan, Jogger, Duster). The three-cylinder that powers most new Dacias. The turbocharged TCe 90 uses a belt-in-oil ("wet belt") design. Renault's replacement schedule allows up to 6 years or 120,000 km (75,000 miles), but that number assumes one thing: RN17-approved 0W-20 oil, changed on schedule, every time. The wet belt's rubber compound is engineered for that specific oil chemistry. Run generic 5W-30 and the belt softens, sheds particles into the sump, and those particles block the oil pickup — the same failure mode that killed Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost wet belts. Buying used with no oil receipts? Price in a belt job and do it by 90,000 km (56,000 miles). And never, ever let a quick-lube shop pour "whatever fits" into this engine.
0.9 TCe 90 (Sandero, Logan, Duster, roughly 2012–2020). Chain-driven, so no belt anxiety — the chain is designed to last the engine's life if the oil stays clean. Known irritations rather than killers: ignition coils, occasional carbon buildup from direct injection-era tuning, and oil leaks from the valve cover. Keep 5W-40 or the specified 5W-30 in it, changed yearly, and it's a 250,000 km engine.
1.2 TCe 125 (Duster, some Sanderos, ~2013–2017). The one to research before you buy. This is Renault's H5Ft, and it has a documented oil consumption defect — piston rings that seat badly and let the engine burn oil at rates up to a litre per 1,000 km. Renault revised pistons mid-production, but plenty of affected engines are in the used pool, especially in Eastern European imports. Pre-purchase: check the dipstick before and after the test drive, look for blue smoke on cold start, and ask directly about top-up habits. An owner who says "I add a litre between services" is describing the defect. A consuming engine needs pistons — €2,000+ of work in a €6,000 car. Walk away.
1.5 dCi / Blue dCi (K9K — the workhorse). The engine that built Dacia's reputation. In production since 2001, over ten million made, and genuinely capable of 400,000 km (250,000 miles). Its failures are almost all owner-inflicted. Injectors die from bad fuel and skipped fuel filters — replace the fuel filter every 30,000 km (18,600 miles), and buy diesel from busy stations. Turbos die from stretched oil intervals, because the K9K's oil feed lines coke up with degraded oil. And the DPF on post-2011 cars clogs on pure city duty: if your driving is all urban, take the car onto the motorway for 20 minutes a week at 2,000+ rpm so the filter can regenerate. Blue dCi versions add AdBlue — keep it topped up with quality fluid, not the cheapest jug at the petrol station, because crystallised injector dosing units are a €400 repair. Timing belt: 6 years or 90,000–120,000 km depending on market schedule. Be conservative — 90,000 km (56,000 miles). A snapped belt on this interference engine means bent valves and a dead car.
ECO-G 100 LPG bi-fuel (huge in Bulgaria and Romania). Factory LPG on the 1.0 TCe base. Good news first: Dacia fits hardened valve seats, so unlike aftermarket conversions you don't need valve-saver additives. What changes in the schedule: spark plugs wear faster in gas combustion — replace every 30,000–40,000 km, no stretching. The LPG filters (gas phase and liquid phase) need replacing around every 30,000 km or 2 years. The tank requires pressure recertification every 10 years in most EU countries. And because this is the same wet-belt TCe engine, the RN17 oil rule applies double — LPG runs hotter, which is harder on oil. Total extra cost over petrol: maybe €60–100 per year, recovered in about two tanks of gas at Balkan LPG prices.
Timing belt: the one job you don't negotiate
Every belt-engined Dacia — 1.5 dCi, older 1.6 MPI, 1.0 TCe — is an interference engine. Belt snaps, pistons hit valves, engine dies. Dacia's own guidance says replace at 5–6 years or roughly 90,000–120,000 km (56,000–75,000 miles), whichever comes first, and the years matter as much as the kilometres. Rubber ages sitting still. A 7-year-old belt with 40,000 km on it is more dangerous than a 4-year-old belt at 100,000.
Always replace the water pump at the same time. It's driven by the belt, it costs €40–60 as a part, and the labour is already paid for — the mechanic is holding it in his hand. A pump that seizes at 60,000 km takes your new belt with it, and you pay the whole €400 job twice.
Why Dacia parts prices are the quiet win
This is where the Renault parts-bin strategy pays you back. Common consumables, independent-garage prices, 2025–2026 EU market:

Compare a VW Golf: front discs and pads fitted run €250–350, a DSG service €200–300 on top of engine oil, and a timing job on an EA211 is €500–700. The Dacia's torsion-beam rear axle has almost nothing to wear out. Anti-roll bar links — the classic Eastern European pothole casualty — are €15–25 a side and a 20-minute DIY job with basic tools. This is a car designed to be fixed in a driveway, and you should treat that as a feature.
Model notes
Sandero / Logan. Mechanically identical twins. Lightest cars in the range, so brakes and tyres last longest. Check rear axle bushes past 120,000 km on pothole-country cars.
Duster. Heavier, and 4x4 versions add a driveline: rear differential and coupling oil every 60,000 km (37,000 miles) — a service almost every used 4x4 Duster has skipped. Budget €80–120 and just do it at purchase.
Jogger. A stretched Sandero with three rows. Same TCe 110 / ECO-G engines, same wet-belt rules. Loaded seven-up it works its brakes harder — expect pads 10,000 km sooner.
Spring EV. Almost nothing to service: no oil, no belt, no clutch, reduction-gear fluid and coolant on long intervals, cabin filter yearly. The one real job is brakes — regenerative braking means the friction brakes barely work, so the discs rust instead of wearing. Have them cleaned and lubricated yearly and use firm stops occasionally to scrub the rust off, or you'll fail an inspection with 90% pad left.
The record-keeping problem is the whole game
Here's the uncomfortable truth about used Dacias: because services are cheap, owners do them at small garages, pay cash, and keep nothing. Then the car is worth €1,000 less at sale because nobody can prove the belt was done — so the buyer pays for a belt job that may have been done 10,000 km ago.
