Citroëns are cheap to buy and cheap to run — right up until someone skips the maintenance the factory schedule undersells. Under the skin, a modern C3, C4, C5 Aircross or Berlingo is Stellantis hardware shared with Peugeot and Opel, which means it shares their strengths and their two famous weaknesses: the 1.2 PureTech wet belt and, on older diesels, the 1.6 HDi turbo oil-feed strainer. Know those two, follow a sensible interval regime, and a Citroën is one of the cheapest cars in Europe to keep on the road.
The service schedule Citroën gives you — and the one to actually follow
Officially, most modern Citroëns run service intervals of 25,000 km (15,500 miles) or 1 year for diesels and around 15,000–25,000 km (9,300–15,500 miles) or 1 year for petrols, depending on engine and market. That's the schedule written to make fleet running costs look good in a brochure.
Follow this instead:
- Oil and filter: every 15,000 km (9,300 miles) or 12 months on any PureTech petrol — non-negotiable, and the reason comes next. Diesels can stretch to 20,000 km (12,400 miles) if they see regular motorway work; halve that for city cars.
- Full inspection service: annually regardless of mileage. Brake fluid every 2 years. Cabin filter annually. Coolant check at every service, replacement around 5 years.
- Never let a dealer or the in-dash service indicator talk you into 30,000 km oil intervals on long-life oil. That maths killed more PSA engines than any design flaw.
The 1.2 PureTech wet belt: the issue that defines this engine
The 1.2 PureTech (EB2) three-cylinder in the C3, C3 Aircross, C4, C5 Aircross and Berlingo runs its timing belt inside the engine, bathed in oil. Fuel dilution from cold starts and short trips turns that oil chemically aggressive; the belt swells, cracks, and sheds rubber debris that clogs the oil pump pickup. The failure mode usually isn't a snapped belt — it's oil starvation, a rattling top end, and then a dead engine.
Citroën originally quoted up to 10 years or around 175,000–240,000 km for the belt depending on market. Stellantis has since revised intervals downward repeatedly, extended goodwill coverage to up to 10 years / 180,000 km for belt degradation and oil consumption on affected engines, and opened compensation schemes in several countries. Read that sequence of events for what it is: an admission.
Your working rules:
- Belt replacement: 100,000 km (62,000 miles) or 6 years, whichever comes first. Hard urban use? Specialists who see these daily say 60,000–80,000 km. Budget EUR 500–750 ($540–810) at an independent.
- Oil: PSA B71 2010 spec (0W-20 on Euro 6.3+ cars, ACEA C5), every 15,000 km or 1 year maximum. Wrong oil accelerates belt breakdown. Check the level monthly — these engines can consume oil, and running low cooks the belt faster.
- Warning signs: oil pressure light flickering at idle, rough running, the oil filler cap showing rubber debris. Any of these means stop driving and inspect the pickup strainer.
- Good news: from 2023, third-generation PureTech engines — mostly the 48V hybrid variants (EB2LTED codes) in newer C3, C4 and C5 Aircross models — switched to a timing chain. If you're buying, that generation removes the problem entirely. Verify by engine code, not model year; both versions overlapped on sale.
BlueHDi diesels: great engines, wrong use case for most buyers
The 1.5 BlueHDi (and earlier 1.6 BlueHDi) is genuinely durable — 300,000 km examples are common in Berlingo fleet service. The engine isn't the problem. The emissions equipment is, and only if you buy the diesel for the wrong life.
The DPF needs regular sustained runs — 20–30 minutes at motorway speed — to burn off soot. A diesel Berlingo doing 8 km school runs will interrupt regenerations constantly, which means a clogging filter and diesel washing into the oil sump. AdBlue adds its own reality: consumption around 1 litre per 1,000 km, a tank that demands refills between services, and injector/pump faults that trigger a no-restart countdown when ignored. Budget for AdBlue system repairs of EUR 300–900 ($325–975) at some point past 100,000 km.
Rule of thumb: under 20,000 km a year or mostly urban driving, buy the petrol. Over that, with regular longer runs, the BlueHDi will outlast the rest of the car. Change the fuel filter every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) — PSA diesels are sensitive to fuel contamination, and a EUR 60 filter protects EUR 1,500 of injectors.
The older 1.6 HDi: the turbo strainer classic
If you run a pre-2018 Citroën with the 1.6 HDi (DV6) — older C3s, C4s, Berlingos by the million — learn this one failure because it's the classic PSA story. The turbo's oil-feed pipe carries a banjo bolt with a fine mesh strainer. Extended oil intervals produce carbon and sludge, the strainer blocks, and the turbo bearing runs dry. The turbo screams, dies, and dumps debris through the oil system.
The trap is the repeat failure: fit a new turbo without replacing the feed pipe, strainer and sump pickup, without flushing the system, and the new turbo dies inside 10,000 km. A proper job — turbo plus pipes, pickup, oil and filter — runs EUR 900–1,400 ($975–1,510). Prevention costs a EUR 90 oil service every 12,000–15,000 km. That's the entire lesson.
Suspension: comfort tech by era
Citroën's comfort reputation now comes from two places. Most current models use conventional springs and dampers; C4, C5 Aircross and later C3s add Progressive Hydraulic Cushions — Citroën's Advanced Comfort dampers with hydraulic bump stops. Maintenance-wise they're serviced like normal dampers, just priced slightly higher: expect EUR 150–250 ($160–270) per corner in parts. They wear like normal dampers too — check for float and poor body control from 100,000 km.
True hydropneumatic suspension — spheres, LDS fluid, the magic-carpet ride — died with the C5 and C6 (last built 2017). If you own one, this guide isn't enough: sphere regassing runs EUR 60–100 each and the systems reward specialist knowledge. Find a hydropneumatic specialist and treat the car as the enthusiast machine it now is.
Everyday wear items are unglamorous: front drop links and anti-roll bar bushes knock from 60,000–80,000 km on rough urban roads, and Berlingos loaded like vans eat rear springs.
EAT8 gearbox: "filled for life" is marketing
The Aisin-built EAT8 automatic in the C4, C5 Aircross and Berlingo is a good gearbox, and Citroën says the fluid never needs changing. Aisin transmissions have always responded well to fresh fluid, and specialists who rebuild these boxes recommend a drain-and-fill around 60,000–80,000 km (37,000–50,000 miles). "Sealed for life" means sealed for the warranty period — the fluid still shears, oxidises and fills with clutch material like any ATF.
A drain-and-fill costs EUR 250–400 ($270–430). Jerky low-speed shifts and delayed engagement are the fluid asking. A replacement EAT8 is EUR 3,000–5,000. Do the maths once and you'll never call it optional again.
Electrics and the BSI: batteries matter more here
Older Citroëns (roughly 2001–2015) route nearly everything through the BSI — the body systems interface. The BSI hates low voltage. A tired battery causes brownouts during cranking, and the BSI responds with random faults: self-operating wipers, phantom warning lights, immobiliser refusals, dead windows. Owners replace modules and chase wiring when the actual fix was a EUR 120–180 ($130–195) battery.
So on a Citroën, battery care is engine-level maintenance. Test it annually from year four, replace proactively at the first weak reading, and never jump-start or change the battery carelessly — BSI units are sensitive to voltage spikes. If gremlins appear after a flat battery, try the BSI reset procedure before spending money on parts. Newer Stellantis-era cars are far better behaved, but stop-start batteries (EFB/AGM) still need like-for-like replacement and coding on some models.

Annualised, a petrol C3 or C4 runs roughly EUR 350–500 ($380–540) a year in routine maintenance; a diesel Berlingo doing real mileage lands around EUR 500–700 ($540–760) with AdBlue and fuel filters included. The catastrophic bills — wet belt engines, starved turbos, cooked gearboxes — are almost entirely skipped-maintenance bills.
Model notes: where each one bites
- C3 / C3 Aircross: mostly PureTech-powered city cars, which means mostly short trips — exactly the duty cycle that degrades the wet belt fastest. Shorten oil intervals; check the belt early.
- C4: widest engine spread. Petrol PureTech carries the belt question; ë-C4 electric versions delete the engine worries entirely and need little beyond brakes, tyres, cabin filter and coolant checks.
- C5 Aircross: heaviest of the group, hardest on front tyres and dampers. Common EAT8 pairing — do the fluid. Hybrid versions add a dedicated e-motor cooling circuit; keep it serviced.
- Berlingo: the workhorse. Bought for load-lugging, so watch rear springs, rear brakes (often neglected because fronts do the work), and sliding-door mechanisms. Diesel versions in courier use are the DPF's best friend; diesel versions on school-run duty are its worst enemy.
Track it or lose it
Every failure mode in this guide has the same root: nobody could prove when the oil was last changed, so nobody knew the belt was living in acid or the strainer was silting up.
