Metal-on-metal grinding means your braking capability may already be reduced and every stop is damaging the rotors. Short, careful drives to a shop are one thing — commuting on it for another week is asking for a longer stopping distance when you least want one.

What it means

A grinding noise when you press the brake pedal is most often the sound of brake pads that have worn past their friction material, so the metal backing plate is pressing directly against the rotor. Some pads have a built-in wear indicator that starts as a squeal and turns into grinding once the pad is fully gone.

Grinding that happens while driving (not just while braking) can instead point at a dragging caliper, a stone caught in the dust shield, or a failing wheel bearing — so pay attention to exactly when the noise occurs.

DIY checks before the shop

  1. Note exactly when it grinds: only when braking (points at pads), all the time (bearing or debris), or only the first few stops of the day (surface rust).
  2. Look through the wheel spokes at the brake pad — on many cars you can see how much friction material is left against the rotor. Less than about 3 mm means it is time.
  3. Check the rotor face for deep circular grooves or a shiny lip at the edge — signs the pad backing has been cutting into it.
  4. Feel the wheel (carefully, after a short drive) — a dragging caliper makes one wheel noticeably hotter than the others.
