Your Opel's service schedule depends on one question most owners never ask: which company actually built the engine? Opel spent decades under General Motors, then moved to PSA in 2017 and Stellantis in 2021. A 2016 Astra K and a 2022 Astra L share a badge and almost nothing else — different engines, different oil specs, different failure modes. Get the era wrong and you'll follow the wrong schedule with the wrong oil. On one particular engine, that mistake can destroy the motor.
Here's what each generation actually needs.
Two Opels, Two Service Philosophies
GM era (up to roughly 2019 on the road): Corsa D/E, Astra J/K, Insignia A/B, Mokka X, Zafira. These use GM's flexible service regime — an oil-life monitor that allows up to 30,000 km (18,600 miles) or 1 year between services on some engines. Don't trust it. The monitor estimates oil condition from driving data; it doesn't measure fuel dilution or soot. The turbocharged petrols and diesels in this era punish long intervals with stretched timing chains and sludged PCV systems. Change oil every 15,000 km (9,300 miles) or annually, whichever comes first. Oil spec: dexos2 5W-30.
PSA/Stellantis era (2018–present): Corsa F, Mokka B, Astra L, Crossland, Grandland, new Frontera. Fixed intervals: 25,000 km (15,500 miles) or 1 year for petrol, shorter for diesels. Oil spec changes completely — PSA B71 2010-approved 0W-30. On the 1.2 PureTech this is not a preference, it's a survival requirement, for reasons below.
If you're not sure which era you own: 2017–2019 is the transition. Check the engine code on the V5C/registration document or under the bonnet. A three-cylinder Corsa is PSA; a four-cylinder Corsa E is GM.
The 1.4 Turbo (A14NET/B14NET): Chain and PCV
This is the engine in millions of Astra Js, Corsa Ds/Es, Mokka Xs, and Insignias. Two signature failures.
Timing chain. The chain and tensioner stretch, typically announcing themselves as a rattle for the first few seconds after a cold start, most often between 90,000 and 150,000 km (56,000–93,000 miles). The root cause is almost always oil: the hydraulic tensioner needs clean oil at pressure, and 30,000 km intervals starve it. A chain kit with labour runs €800–1,200 ($880–1,320). Ignore the rattle long enough and a jumped chain means bent valves and a €3,000+ bill. There's no scheduled replacement interval — your oil discipline is the interval.
PCV system. The crankcase ventilation membrane is built into the valve cover and a check valve sits in the intake manifold. When the membrane tears you get a whistle at idle, rough running, and a P0171 or P0101 code that gets misdiagnosed as a MAF sensor. A valve cover is €120–250 ($130–275) plus an hour's labour. Cheap fix, commonly missed. If your 1.4 Turbo hunts at idle, check the PCV before you replace sensors.
Also budget for coolant system plastics — thermostat housings and water pumps weep on this engine family. Coolant change: every 5 years regardless of what the flexible schedule says.
The 1.0 and 1.4 Three-Cylinder Ecotec (Adam, Corsa E, Astra K)
GM's later small petrols (B10XFT 1.0 Turbo, B14XFT 1.4 Turbo) are chain-driven — no belt interval to budget. They're fundamentally sounder than the A14NET but not fault-free: ignition coils and the odd rough-idle complaint on the 1.0, and the three-cylinder's inherent vibration works dual-mass flywheels and engine mounts harder than a four-pot would. Oil every 15,000 km with dexos2, coils treated as a 60,000–80,000 km consumable, and these engines are quietly reliable.
The 1.2 PureTech Wet Belt: The One That Matters
If you own a Corsa F, Mokka B, Astra L, Crossland, or Grandland petrol, read this section twice.
The PSA-designed 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder runs its timing belt inside the engine, bathed in oil. The belt's polymer degrades in contact with oil — especially the wrong oil — swelling, shedding teeth, and dumping rubber debris into the oil pickup. The failure mode is ugly twice over: a snapped belt wrecks the valvetrain, and belt debris starves the oil pump, which can kill the engine even before the belt lets go. Repair bills of €3,000–6,000 are documented across the Stellantis brands.
Stellantis originally scheduled the belt for up to 10 years or around 175,000 km. After years of failures — some at under 70,000 km (43,000 miles) — the interval was cut to roughly 100,000 km (62,000 miles) or 6 years, and the company extended goodwill coverage on affected engines to 10 years/150,000 km in many markets. Independent specialists who deal with these weekly go further: inspect from 60,000 km, replace by 80,000 km for hard-use city cars.
Your defence costs little:
- Oil spec is critical. Only B71 2010-approved 0W-30. Wrong oil accelerates belt breakdown.
- Change oil every 15,000 km (9,300 miles) or 1 year maximum — sooner for short-trip driving, which dilutes oil with fuel.
- Check the level monthly. These engines consume oil; a low level concentrates contaminants against the belt.
- Listen and look. A rattly cold start, an oil-pressure warning, or sludge under the filler cap on a PureTech means stop driving and inspect.
A wet-belt replacement runs €500–900 ($550–990) — annoying, but a tenth of the failure cost. From 2023, Stellantis began fitting a timing chain to revised PureTech units, so the newest Corsas and Astras escape the problem. Everything earlier lives with it.
The Diesels: 1.6 CDTI and 1.5 — Great on Motorways, Miserable in Town
The GM-era 1.6 CDTI "Whisper Diesel" (B16DTH and friends) and the PSA-era 1.5 diesel are efficient, refined, and completely dependent on how you drive them. Both carry an EGR valve and a DPF, and both clog when the engine never gets hot. City-only use interrupts DPF regenerations mid-cycle, washes diesel into the oil, and cakes the EGR with soot. Symptoms: limp mode, rising oil level on the dipstick, warning lights, €300–500 cleaning bills — or €1,000+ for a new filter.
The rule is simple: if you don't drive at least one sustained 20-minute run per week and 12,000+ km a year, you bought the wrong fuel.
Belt intervals: the 1.6 CDTI's schedule allows up to 150,000 km/10 years — treat 100,000 km/6 years as the sensible ceiling. The PSA 1.5 diesel also uses a belt-in-oil design in earlier form, so the PureTech oil rules apply to it too. Diesel oil changes: every 15,000 km, no exceptions, because fuel dilution is the enemy.
Transmissions and Electrics
Easytronic (the automated manual in Corsas and older Astras) fails at the clutch actuator and needs periodic clutch-wear recalibration — a €60 job at any Opel-capable garage that prevents €700+ actuator replacements. If yours jerks or hesitates, calibrate first.
Conventional automatics (Aisin 6-speed in GM-era cars, Aisin 8-speed in Stellantis-era): "lifetime fill" means the transmission's lifetime, not yours. Change fluid every 60,000 km (37,000 miles), roughly €200–350 ($220–385).
Electrics: older Opels have two known modules. The CIM (steering-column module, Vectra/Signum/Corsa D) causes dead indicators and wipers. The Astra J and Insignia can suffer water ingress into footwell electronics when bulkhead and sunroof drains clog — clear the drains every autumn, it's free. Stellantis-era cars are largely clean so far apart from infotainment glitches fixed by software updates.

How Opels Hold Up: The TÜV Verdict
German TÜV inspection data puts Opel mid-field — not Toyota, not trouble. The Corsa's recurring inspection failures are mundane: headlight aim and alignment, worn suspension springs and dampers on older cars, and oil leaks past 8–10 years. The Astra tells the same story: solid early, average later, with brakes and lighting the common demerits. Nothing structural, nothing exotic — which means an Opel's long-term condition tracks its maintenance history more closely than most brands. A cared-for 200,000 km Astra is a normal sight. A neglected one telegraphs it at the first inspection.
