Winter puts your car through its worst. Salt, cold starts, pothole-damaged roads, and months of short trips that never let the engine fully warm up. Spring is when you find out what survived and what didn't. This checklist covers the 12 checks that matter most after winter — the ones that prevent a breakdown, a failed inspection, or a repair bill you didn't see coming.
Swap winter tires at the right time
Winter tires are designed for cold — the compound stays pliable below 7°C (45°F). Above that, the soft rubber wears faster and handles less precisely. Swap to all-season or summer tires when overnight temperatures consistently stay above 7°C — typically mid-April to early May in northern climates.
Don't rush the swap based on a warm week. One late-season cold snap with summer tires is more dangerous than running winter tires a few weeks longer than necessary. When you pull the winter tires, inspect the tread depth and mark each tire's position (FL, FR, RL, RR) for next season.
Check tire pressure cold
Tire pressure changes roughly 1 PSI for every 10°F (5.5°C) in temperature. A tire that was properly inflated at 30°F in January will read 3–5 PSI over the placard pressure on a 70°F spring day — or it may read correctly because it slowly lost pressure over winter. Check it either way.
Use the pressure on the driver's door jamb sticker, not the tire sidewall. Check when tires are cold — before driving or at least three hours after parking. Under-inflated tires wear unevenly, reduce handling response, and cut fuel economy.
Inspect sidewalls for winter damage
Potholes are most severe in late winter and early spring when freeze-thaw cycles break up road surfaces. A hard pothole impact can create an internal break in a tire's structure — the first visible sign is a bulge in the sidewall. A sidewall bulge means the tire is structurally compromised and can fail without warning. Replace it immediately.
Also look for cuts, embedded debris, and cracking in the sidewall rubber. Surface cracking on tires that are six or more years old indicates UV and ozone degradation — inspect the date code (four digits molded into the sidewall: week and year of manufacture) and consider replacement.
Do a visual brake inspection
With the wheels off (or through the wheel spokes), look at the brake rotors and pads. The rotor should be smooth with minimal lip around the edge — a deep groove means the rotor is worn and needs resurfacing or replacement. The pad thickness visible from the outside should be at least 3mm; anything thinner and you're approaching the wear indicators.
If you hear squealing when braking, that's the wear indicator telling you the pads are low. If you hear grinding, metal is already contacting metal — stop driving and replace immediately. Winter braking in salt and wet conditions accelerates rotor rust, so spring is the right time to assess what the season did to your braking system.
Wash the undercarriage — properly
Road salt is the most corrosive thing your car encounters, and it accumulates all winter on the frame, subframe, brake lines, fuel lines, and suspension components. A spring undercarriage wash is not optional — it's damage control.
A drive-through with an undercarriage wash option works. For thorough cleaning, use a pressure washer on jack stands or a lift, paying attention to frame rails, wheel wells, and any area where salt packs and dries. After washing, inspect for surface rust on brake lines and fuel lines — any bubbling, pitting, or flaking on metal lines needs professional attention.
Check steering and suspension feel
Winter potholes stress-test your suspension harder than anything else. After driving on spring roads for a week, pay attention to new vibrations, clunks when turning, or pulling to one side. These symptoms suggest worn ball joints, tie rod ends, or bent wheels.
On a quiet road, turn the wheel lock-to-lock at low speed and listen for clicking or clunking from the front end — CV joint issues are common after hard winter driving. If the car tracks straight and doesn't pull, and you don't feel any looseness in the steering wheel, your suspension is likely intact.
Check oil level and condition
Cold starts are the most stressful event for engine oil — the engine runs on minimal lubrication for a few seconds until oil pressure builds. After a full winter of cold starts, check the oil level and condition. Pull the dipstick: the level should be between MIN and MAX, and the oil should be dark amber to dark brown but not black or gritty.
If you're within 2,000 miles of your oil change interval and spring is here, do it now. Fresh oil at the start of the driving season means better protection through the warm months ahead. Log the change — oil type, viscosity, filter brand, and mileage — so you know exactly where you stand next fall.
Do a battery load test
Cold weather is hard on batteries — every cold start draws maximum current at the moment the battery has its lowest capacity. A battery that "survived" winter may be significantly weakened. A battery that starts the car fine in 40°F weather can fail to start it on a 100°F summer day when the heat further degrades it.
Most auto parts stores will test your battery for free with a load tester. A battery that tests "weak" or "bad" but still starts the car is on borrowed time. Replacing it in spring is far better than being stranded in August. Battery lifespan in variable climates is typically 3–5 years; check the date code.
Top up coolant, brake fluid, and washer fluid
Coolant should be at the MIN/MAX range in the overflow reservoir. Check the color — it should be its original shade (green, orange, or pink depending on type) and clear, not cloudy or rusty brown. If it looks degraded, a flush is due. Coolant loses its anti-corrosion additives over time, and that's when rust builds inside the cooling system.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture through the year. Most manufacturers recommend flushing every 2–3 years. Pop the reservoir cap and check the color — light amber is fine, dark brown means it needs changing. For washer fluid, switch from winter freeze-resistant formula to a summer concentration that handles bug residue better.
Walk-around light check
Turn on every light and walk around the car. Headlights (low and high beam), tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and fog lights if equipped. Park near a wall to verify headlight aim — uneven light patterns suggest a burned-out element or a lens knocked out of position by a pothole.
Check headlight lens clarity. Oxidized, yellowed lenses reduce output by up to 80% and can fail a safety inspection. Restoration kits ($15–20) work well on moderate oxidation; severe clouding may require replacement. Clean lenses are a safety item, not just cosmetic.
Replace wiper blades
Winter wiper blades are heavy winter-rated rubber designed to handle snow and ice. If you ran them all winter, the rubber is likely stiff and streaking. Spring and summer rain requires a lighter, cleaner wipe — swap to standard blades now.
Even if you ran standard blades all winter, inspect them. Hold the blade against the windshield and look for cracks, tears, or stiff spots in the rubber. Wiper blades cost $15–30 for a set and take five minutes to replace. Driving in heavy spring rain with streaking wipers is a visibility hazard that's easily avoided.
Check cabin and engine air filters
Spring means pollen, and your cabin air filter is your car's HVAC system's defense against it. A clogged cabin filter means weak A/C, fogged windows, and recirculating whatever it trapped over winter. Pull it out — it usually lives behind the glove box — and hold it up to light. If it's gray and full of debris, swap it. Cost is $15–25 and takes five minutes on most vehicles.
Check the engine air filter too. A restricted engine air filter cuts fuel economy and performance. If it's gray or brown (not the original white or yellow), replace it. Both filters together cost less than $40 on most cars and have more impact on the daily driving experience than most maintenance items.
