The JK ran two very different engines across its production. The 3.8L V6 (2007–2011) is known for oil consumption and shorter service intervals. The 3.6L Pentastar (2012–2018) is a significant improvement — more power, better reliability, and longer oil change intervals. Know which engine you have before planning your service schedule.
Engine oil — two very different engines
The 3.8L and 3.6L require different oil specs and different attention levels. The 3.8L in particular benefits from tighter intervals and close oil level monitoring.
- 3.8L V6 (2007–2011): 5W-20 full synthetic, every 3,000–5,000 miles. Chrysler's factory interval was aggressive; most experienced JK owners go no longer than 5,000 miles on a well-maintained 3.8L. Known oil consumption issue: check oil level every 1,500–2,000 miles. Capacity: 6 quarts.
- 3.6L Pentastar (2012–2018): 0W-20 full synthetic, every 5,000–6,000 miles. Chrysler revised the interval upward on later JK Pentastars. The 3.6L is significantly more tolerant than the 3.8L. Capacity: 6 quarts.
- 3.8L oil burning — what to watch for: If you're adding half a quart between 3,000-mile changes, that's within the normal range for a high-mileage 3.8L. If you're adding a full quart before 3,000 miles, suspect valve stem seals or rings. Blue smoke on startup is the clearest sign.
- Off-road and towing: Either engine under sustained heavy load should go to a 3,000-mile interval. The JK is heavier than a TJ and works the drivetrain harder on trails. Heat cycles degrade oil faster in hard use than mileage alone suggests.
Transfer case & Dana axle fluids
The JK has the same four fluid points as the JL: transfer case, front axle, rear axle, and the front differential sump. The NV241 and NV241OR Rock-Trac both use ATF+4. Don't improvise on fluid specifications here.
- Transfer case (NV241 / NV241OR Rock-Trac): Mopar ATF+4. Change every 30,000 miles under normal use; every 20,000 miles with frequent water crossings or heavy off-road use. Capacity: approximately 1.0 quart.
- Dana 30 front axle (Sport/Sahara): 75W-90 GL-5 gear oil. Change every 30,000 miles. If you've added an aftermarket locker (ARB, Ox-Locker, etc.), verify whether that locker requires friction modifier — most do. Capacity: approximately 1.6 quarts.
- Dana 44 front axle (Rubicon): 75W-140 GL-5. Every 30,000 miles. The Rubicon's electronic front locker is sensitive to fluid spec — use 75W-140 as specified, not a generic 75W-90.
- Dana 35 rear axle (Sport/Sahara): 75W-90 GL-5. Every 30,000 miles. The Dana 35 has a reputation for being the JK's weakest axle — traction devices and larger tires add stress. Keep the fluid fresh and inspect the axle shaft U-joints annually.
- Dana 44 rear axle (Rubicon): 75W-140 GL-5. Every 30,000 miles. More durable than the 35 but the same fluid discipline applies.
Spark plugs, coolant & transmission
Spark plug intervals differ significantly between the 3.8L and 3.6L. The JK runs an orange HOAT coolant — mixing it with green conventional coolant causes scaling and water pump failure.
- Spark plugs (3.8L): Every 30,000 miles. The 3.8L uses conventional copper-tipped plugs — a short interval but they're inexpensive. NGK or Champion OEM-spec plugs. Torque to 13–15 ft-lb. 6 plugs total.
- Spark plugs (3.6L Pentastar): Every 60,000 miles using OEM iridium plugs. Champion iridium or NGK equivalent. Don't use copper plugs as a "cheaper" replacement — the iridium spec is there for a reason.
- Coolant: Orange HOAT coolant (Zerex G-05 or equivalent). First change at 60,000 miles, then every 30,000 miles. Do not mix with green ethylene glycol coolant — even a partial mix causes gel precipitation. Flush fully before refilling.
- Manual transmission (NSG370): Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant (MTF), every 45,000 miles. Do not use GL-5 — it damages the brass synchros in the NSG370.
- Automatic transmission (65RFE): Mopar ATF+4, every 30,000–45,000 miles for off-road use. Factory says "lifetime fluid" in normal use, but that assumes no significant heat cycling. Trail driving and towing are not normal use.
The JK is a proven platform — high-mileage, well-maintained JKs regularly hit 200,000 miles. The 3.8L owners who get there are the ones who changed oil every 4,000 miles and checked the level. The 3.6L owners who get there changed fluids on schedule and didn't ignore the Dana service.
